BABSON COLLEGE SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2016/2017
2016/2017 MAJOR INITIATIVES Curriculum Support During the academic year, the Sustainability Office partnered with faculty to introduce new sustainability content into undergraduate and graduate programs. Left: MBA students in ACC7201: Measuring & Managing Strategic Performance grapple with creating metrics for sustainability Support for sustainable transportation To reduce the Babson community's transportation emissions, this year Babson: Started offering pre-tax transit benefits Joined the MassDOT's emergency ride home program Installed twelve electric vehicle charging stations Left: Biz E Beaver checks out an electric vehicle Annual events During the academic year, the Sustainability Office and our campus partners hosted: From Day One Fest Zero Waste Challenge Tree Planting Waste Audit Babson Social Innovation Summit Babson Energy & Environment Conference Left: Students at From Day One Fest in 2016
Partnership with Babson Dining Services Over the academic year, the Sustainability Office and Babson Dining Services have collaborated to: Introduce more sustainable packaging Implement a new to-go container program Analyze sustainable options for food Left: New signage in Trim Dining Hall communicates the impact of food waste Recycling, Compost, and Trash System In partnership with Facilities Management, the Sustainability Office implemented a new trash, recycling, and compost collection system that has cut costs, increased diversion, and reduced staff time spent on recycling. Left: New recycling container at Olin Hall LEED Buildings August 2016 marked the completion of the renovation and construction work that created the Park Manor Quad. During this process, Park Manors Central and South were renovated to the LEED Silver standard, and Park Manor West was built to the LEED Certified standard. Left: New signage in Park Manor West notes some of the building's sustainability features.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations, were created to help end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Through our efforts across campus, Babson is working to support the achievement of these goals, as outlined below. Goal 1: No Poverty Social Innovation Inventureship with the Greyston Bakery Need-based grants and scholarships Goal 2: Zero Hunger Partnership with Babson Dining Services Office of Faith and Service Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being Schlesinger Fund, Global Heathcare Entrepreneurship Wellness programs Goal 4: Quality Education Kaplan Award for Academics Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching Goal 5: Gender Equality Center for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation Grounds management Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy LEED-certified buildings Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth Social Innovation Lab
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure BEEC Conference LEED-certified buildings Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities Diversity and inclusion initiatives Her Future Coalition Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities From Day One Fest Community partnerships Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production Partnership with Babson Dining Services Goal 13: Climate Action Energy efficiency and conservation Tree planting Transportation alternatives Goal 14: Life Below Water Partnership with Babson Dining Services for sustainably sourced seafood Goal 15: Life on Land Partnership with Babson Dining Services Goal 16: Peace and Justice Social Innovation Inventureship with the UN Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals Sustainability at Babson's success is due to support from across campus
SUSTAINABILITY BY THE NUMBERS WHAT WE'RE TRACKING CAMPUS ENERGY AND EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS OVER TIME ,500 MMBtu ENERGY USE 2006 EMISSIONS 25,553 metric tonnes of equivalent 2016 ENERGY USE 147,494 MMBtu 2016 EMISSIONS 19,115 metric tonnes of equivalent 25% REDUCTION 25% REDUCTION WASTE REDUCTION AND DIVERSION OVER TIME FY06 (YTD) 1,779 tons TOTAL WASTE FY06 (YTD) DIVERSION 241 tons FY17 (YTD) TOTAL WASTE 1,224 tons FY16 (YTD) DIVERSION 320 tons 31% REDUCTION 33% INCREASE
HOW WE'RE CUTTING CARBON e Emissions (metric tonnes) DIRECT EMISSIONS (SCOPE 1) Heating fuels: Investment in energy efficiency equipment such as boilers, combined with the conversion of the majority of campus from fuel oil to natural gas, has reduced GHGs from this source. However, this source of emissions can also be impacted by variations in the weather. Campus fleet: Increased consumption of diesel and gasoline has increased GHGs from campus vehicles. Refrigerants: Use of lower impact chemicals has cut the emissions from refrigerants by two-thirds e Emissions (metric tonnes) INDIRECT EMISSIONS FROM ELECTRICITY (SCOPE 2) Electricity: Modest reductions in electricity use have been amplified by the changing New England electricity grid. As coal- and oil-fired power plants have retired, they have been replaced with less dirty natural gasfired power plants and with clean renewables. Additionally, Babson has partnered with its utility to purchase 5% of its electricity from a regional wind farm. However, electricity consumption has been increased due to natural gas-fired chillers being replaced with electric chillers. Together, these changes have reduced the impact of Babson's electricity use by about one-third. e Emissions (metric tonnes) OTHER INDIRECT EMISSIONS (SCOPE 3) Commuting: Changing commuting patterns and increased fuel economy reduced emissions from commuting. Air travel: A rise in the miles traveled for College business and student travel abroad have increased emissions from air travel. Paper: Reduction in paper consumption and increased use of recycled paper has cut emissions in this area
