OUTLINE Quileute Department of Natural Resources Organization Program Areas Partnerships Marine Program Forage Marine Debris HAB Monitoring
Purpose and Goals of QNR Assure that Tribal Treaty Resources are protected and conserved for future generations through developing: Regulations and Management Plans that identify treaty natural resources, conduct inventory and monitoring activities and if applicable manner of harvest Relationships that engage Co-managers at state and federal levels so that their respective activities and regulations are consistent with treaty rights and resource sustainability
7 member Natural Resource Committee (elected officials) Program Layout Director/Deputy Director 3 Administrative Support 11 Staff with degrees in Environmental Sciences (Fisheries, Biology, Geology, Hydrology, Law etc..) 3 Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement staff 7 Technicians (fisheries, shellfish, timber)
Program Areas Fish Management Timber Fish and Wildlife Management Hatchery Production Water Quality Monitoring Marine Program Enrollment Fish and Wildlife Enforcement
Marine Species Management Marine Species Management Management Plans/Agreements Endangered Species Act and Critical Habitat listings Stock Assessments Harvest Allocation Develop Regulation Salmon Halibut Crab Sablefish Clams
Timber, Fish and Wildlife Timber Forest Practices: Roads, Timber Harvest Monitor populations and health of: elk, deer, cougar, fisher and others as needed Noxious Weed Eradication and control Cedar Bark Harvest Archeological Surveys Wetland Surveys
Surveying returned lands (move to higher ground)for significant artifacts and wetlands
Gathering Spring Cedar Harvest

Marine Program Forage Fish Marine Debris and Derelict Gear Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) monitoring Where we monitor Collaborative efforts HAB event 2015 Protoperidinium-flagellate
Forage Fish sampling substrate for eggs
Marine Debris Project- NOAA, TNC and Quileute Tribe Aerial Survey and retrieval 2016 Pots to be recycled
AREA OF QUILEUTE HARVEST FOR SHELLFISH and OTHER SPECIES WHERE WE SAMPLE Audubon WDFW
What we focus our efforts on: Common Marine Biotoxin producing species along our coast Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison (DSP) Paralytic Shellfish Poison
And then there is ASP
We sample seawater and shellfish, at each station we also measure: Temp Conductivity Salinity Chlorophyll Phytoplankton sample Dissolved Domoic acid Weather and sea conditions
The Quileute Fishing fleet helps us sample crab
Or we use our vessel to access sample stations or check on assets such as Cha Ba
HAB Event 2015

Cross calibration and training occurs annually with other HAB monitoring programs along the coast- WDFW, Makah, Quileute Tribes, and the Quinault Nation
Collaborative opportunities
Quileute Shellfish Technician and Marine Biologist go to Sea: University of Washington R/V T.G. Thompson
OCNMS Seasonal Mooring Support Quileute staff conduct HAB sampling at each mooring and provide support for mooring placement, maintenance and retrieval OCNMS Photos
Quileute staff aboard the NOAA research ship Bell M. Shimada-added on to Sardine and Hake survey to conduct HAB biotoxin monitoring-hab event 15
Environmental Sample Processor UW APL and NOAA successfully deploy ESP mooring in 2016 (near Cha Ba) Quileute staff participated in the deployment Provided real-time data on presence and concentration of biotoxin producing species Recovered in October 2016
Biological Sensing Looking forward: Environmental Sensing Platform (ESP) automated toxic species detection on moorings real-time assessment of risk placement at initiation sites possibility to detect toxin (domoic acid) Scholin et al. MBARI
Interesting things come our way Tagged Crab from Oregon caught near La Push
And sometime things block our way Boulder on Lake Crescent Road
So we paddle harder!
