2 Study Highlights US Demand US demand for oilfield chemicals is forecast to increase 7.3 percent per year to $2 billion in Specialty chemicals will remain the largest product type, benefitting not only from rebounding drilling activity but also from stringent environmental regulations and increasing performance standards. Chemical demand will benefit from a strong rebound in the number of oil rigs in use and continued growth in natural gas drilling. In addition, expanding offshore drilling and higher average well depths will increase the amount of mud needed per well. Industry Structure and Participants The supply of oilfield chemicals is fragmented, given the broad range of products involved, with no company providing more than seven percent of the total. The top seven companies -- ExxonMobil, Baker Hughes, Union Carbide, Dow Chemical, Hercules, Shell CO2 and Lafarge -- together controlled just over one third of sales in Freedonia Industry Study 2

6 Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses factors influencing oilfield chemical demand, including environmental considerations and the outlook for petroleum and natural gas. This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the oilfield chemical industry operates. MARKET ENVIRONMENT Petroleum Demand for crude oil is expected to increase 1.3 percent annually to 6.5 billion SAMPLE PAGE barrels in the year Advances will result from continued US economic health, which will promote demand for refined petroleum products such as gasoline, fuel oil and jet fuel. The advanced state of the US manufacturing economy and the highly mobile nature of US society rely heavily on access to petroleum based products to ensure the rapid and efficient movement of people and products throughout the world. In addition, a number of industries, most notably the plastics and chemicals industries, are highly dependent upon petroleum feedstocks. As a result, the US is the world s largest consumer of crude oil, accounting for about 25 percent of world demand. Increasingly, however, the depletion of US crude oil reserves has made the nation ever more dependent on imported crude oil to satisfy growing demand. For example, in 1999, imports accounted for nearly 60 percent of US crude oil consumption. As the gap between demand and domestic production widens, the US economy will become even more susceptible to both short-term and long-term instability caused by fluctuations in crude oil prices and supplies. These fluctuations are caused by unforeseen natural events or by political forces, such as war, trade disagreements or monopolistic pricing instigated by petroleum-rich nations. Events such as the Arab oil embargo of 1973, the Iran-Iraq war, the Gulf War and the 1999 agreement by several OPEC and non-opec states to reduce crude oil production can have an effect on crude oil prices, as well as for prices of downstream products, most notably gasoline and other fuels. In some cases (such as the Arab oil embargo) the results can be dramatic and immediate, while in other instances (the most recent round of announced production cuts) the impact is generally more moderate. Although the bulk of crude oil production in the US will remain onshore, onshore 6 Freedonia Industry Study
7 Products PRODUCTS The Products Section provides demand for historical years and forecasts growth to 2004 and This information helps you: Analyze your company's growth potential in the industry. Surfactants Demand for surfactants used in oilfield applications will advance 8.6 percent per year to $370 million in 2004, significantly faster than overall growth in oilfield SAMPLE PAGE chemical demand. Volume demand for these chemicals will reach 400,000 tons in Gains will be driven by a strong rebound in US drilling and well completions. Value gains will result from a shift in product mix to higher value formulations. Increasing use of surfactants in drilling fluids will also support growth. Nonionic surfactants accounted for the largest share of value demand in 1999, while anionics are largest in volume terms due to the large presence of cheap lignosulfonates. However, cationic and amphoteric surfactants will experience the healthiest growth. Outline your strategic plans for five and ten years out. Establish sales goals. fluid. (million dollars) In oilfield applications, surfactants are often used in drilling muds, corrosion inhibiting formulations and well stimulation. Drilling applications, which accounted for the largest share of demand in 1999 with 34 percent, will experience the strongest growth, followed by well stimulation activities. Surfactants are employed to improve fluid tolerance to ion contamination and to increase the inhibitive properties of the fluid in drilled shales. They are also used to alter and control temperature stability, corrosiveness and foaming tendencies of the drilling Oilfield Natural Gum Demand by Type & Market Lignosulfonates, a type of anionic surfactant, are used extensively in oilfield Item applications. 8 Markets The Markets Section analyzes trends and considers the threats and opportunities in each of the major markets for oilfield chemicals. The information presented will help you: Focus your sales and marketing efforts on high growth areas. Propose new areas for development. MARKETS Cementing Demand for oilfield chemicals for cementing applications is expected to increase eight percent yearly to $278 million in Gains will be supported by rising SAMPLE PAGE average well depth as well as increasing well completions, both of which will require greater amounts of chemicals used in cementing. In addition to requiring more cement, deeper wells also require more specialty additives to prevent the cement from setting before reaching the appropriate depth. The increasing use of polymers and specialty chemicals in these activities to modify the performance of the cement such as in deeper wells will also drive advances. Commodity chemicals, specifically cement, accounted for the majority of consumption in However, polymers will experience the strongest growth in this application, followed by specialty chemicals. In addition to cement, other chemicals used in this application include polymers, such as cellulose polymers, surfactants and other specialty chemicals including Oilfield Chemical Demand in Drilling Markets amines. Some companies supply cementing slurries, which already incorporate (million dollars) specialized additives. These slurries are designed to meet specific concerns and requirements associated with certain sites and well depths. For instance, in 1998 Dowell Schlumberger introduced its DEEPCRETE cementing system, which is Item designed to address the challenges associated with well construction in deep water. 9 Industry Structure Sample page from Freedonia Industry Study Gain #1117 a better Fractional understanding Horsepower of your Motors competition and analyze your company's position in the industry with information about: market share INDUSTRY STRUCTURE competitive strategies research & development marketing & distribution mergers & acquisitions Competitive Strategies The oilfield chemical industry is competitive partially due to the ongoing consolidation among the purchasers of these products and the commodity nature of many of these chemicals. Although the oilfield chemicals industry is markedly different from many other chemical markets and has its own particular dynamics, successful companies in the industry build on competitive strategies such as low cost leadership (often involving vertical integration strategies), product differentiation and market segmentation. SAMPLE PAGE Low cost leadership strategies involve lowering the cost of production to create an advantage for a given producer. This is particularly beneficial in the case of commodity chemicals such as barite, clays and acids, where the difference in product quality from one producer to the next is generally minimal. As a result, competition frequently is based on price, and so producers look to establish themselves as low cost producers. Low cost leadership strategies often include the acquisition of competing companies or product lines, which can yield economies of scale in terms of raw materials costs and production capacity. For example, in July 1999 Air Products and Air Liquide (France) announced plans to acquire BOC Group (United Kingdom), an industrial gases company. Once the acquisition of BOC Group is finalized, Air Products and Air Liquide are expected to divide the acquired operations between themselves. Air Products expects to gain merchant market capabilities in carbon dioxide in the US, among other businesses, which will add to the company s existing range of specialty and industrial gases, including nitrogen and oxygen for oilfield applications. Vertical integration, which involves controlling production of raw materials as well as the final product, is another means of achieving a low cost advantage over competitors. For example, Baroid Drilling Fluids (Halliburton) is vertically integrated in the production of drilling fluids through its Bentonite Performance Order form on last page 9
