2 Study Highlights Conductive polymers demand in the US is projected to grow 6.5 percent annually from a subdued 2001 base to nearly 600 million pounds (including both resins and additives) in Overall advances will result from more intensive use of electronics in motor vehicles, appliances and portable consumer devices, as well as ongoing miniaturization trends and increased use of electrostatic spray painting of automotive and industrial parts. ABS will remain the workhorse resin based on the material's high impact strength. However, better growth is anticipated for PVC due to the resin's lower cost, performance enhancements, and design and processing ease. Antistatic packaging advances will reflect the cost effectiveness of conductive polymers in protecting sensitive electronic devices from static discharges during all stages of production including assembly, handling, transportation and storage. The seven leading firms -- GE Plastics (General Electric), Noveon, DSM Engineering Plastics (DSM - - Netherlands), LNP Engineering Plastics (Kawasaki Steel -- Japan), PolyOne, RTP and Illinois Tool Works -- together accounted for 40 percent of the $1 billion conductive polymer market (including resins, additives and labor) in Freedonia Industry Study 2

6 Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses factors influencing conductive polymers demand, including pricing trends, electrical and electronic equipment outlook, environmental considerations, and Freedonia's uniquely developed macroeconomic indicators. This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the conductive polymers industry operates. MARKET ENVIRONMENT Pricing Trends Pricing for conductive polymers varies significantly, depending on the intended use and subsequent choice of base resin, additives (e.g., flame retardants), conductive fibers or fillers and reinforcements such as glass fibers. Conductive polymer prices, including resins, additives and labor costs, reached $2.39 per pound in Price SAMPLE PAGE increases of 2.4 percent per year are anticipated through 2006 to $2.69 per pound. Resins comprise the greatest volume component of conductive polymers, although conductive additives such as nickel-coated graphite fibers and fibrils cost significantly more on a per pound basis. Even conductive carbon blacks can cost twice as much as commodity thermoplastics such as the polyolefins, yet are significantly lower than engineered plastic prices. Higher performance applications necessarily carry a high price tag. For instance, ABS compounded with nickel-coated graphite fibers for use in EMI/RFI protected computer housings costs about $4 per pound compared to less than $1 per pound for ESD protected, carbon black filled polyethylene film bags. Polyvinyl chloride and the polyolefins (polyethylene and polypropylene) are the dominant conductive commodity thermoplastics because of their diverse applications and the ability to significantly vary their performance parameters via additives. Neat (i.e., polymer only) resin prices range between 30 cents and 50 cents per pound for commodity resins such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polystyrene and high and low density polyethylene resins to more than $3.50 per pound for polyphenylene sulfide resins. Conductive additives, used in significantly smaller quantities than base resins, range in price from less than $2 per pound for carbon black powder to $15 per pound for pitch carbon fiber and stainless steel. The use of inherently conductive polymers (ICPs -- between $50 and $100 per pound) and nanocarbon products (fibrils-- $50 per pound) is currently limited by their high cost. However, 6 Freedonia Industry Study

7 Technologies & Resins These Sections provide demand for historical years and forecasts growth to 2006 and Fiber-Filled Conductive Polymers TECHNOLOGIES This information helps you: Analyze your company's growth potential in the industry. Outline your strategic plans for five and ten years out. Establish sales goals. Fiber-filled conductive polymer demand is forecast to present the best growth and rise more than 15 percent annually to 75 million pounds (resin only) in 2006 as a SAMPLE PAGE result of greater protection requirements from electromagnetic/ radio frequency interference and electrostatic discharge. Significant improvements have also been made in fiber technologies and processing. Further increases will be restrained by the high cost of fiber-filled technologies compared to metallized and paint-coated counterparts. Fiber-filled technologies are also not cost competitive in lower performance applications. The high aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter) of fibers provides excellent protection against EMI/RFI because the stringy fiber shapes allow individual fibers to contact each other and form an uninterrupted conductive network. Fiber efficiency levels vary, however, requiring different loading levels. For instance, similar shielding levels can be achieved by using a five percent loading of stainless steel fibers, a seven percent nickel-coated graphite fiber loading, or a 15 percent loading of carbon fibers. A variety of fibers are used in conductive polymers, including stainless steel, copper, nickel-coated graphite, carbon/graphite, brass and aluminum. Stainless steel copper are the leading fibers due to their excellent conductivity and Polypropylene Demand in Conductive Polymers processability. Characteristics of stainless steel filled conductive polymers are high (million pounds -- resin content) conductivity and easy processability at small loading levels, offsetting to some Item degree their high cost Stainless 1996 steel fibers 2001 also are not 2006 as abrasive 2011 as glass fibers and have better fracture-resistance qualities than nickel-coated fibers. 8 Functions, Applications & Markets The Functions, Applications and Markets Section analyzes trends and considers the threats and opportunities for conductive polymers. FUNCTIONS, APPLICATIONS & MARKETS The information presented will help you: Focus your sales and marketing efforts on high growth areas. Propose new areas for development. amenability to design changes and better corrosion resistance and cost effective- (million pounds -- resin content ness. only) Markets Leading conductive polymer markets are electrical and electronic equipment, packaging and industrial products. Electrical and electronic equipment accounted SAMPLE PAGE for 56 percent of the total conductive polymer market in Demand for conductive polymers in electrical and electronic equipment is projected to increase 6.5 percent annually to 266 million pounds (resin only) in 2006 based on rapid advances in computer and other technologies, which have significantly shortened the useful life of many electrical and electronic business products by making them obsolete. Continued purchases of productivity enhancing equipment will also be stimulated by lower electronic pricing levels. Conductive polymers are used as housings for business equipment as well as internal components due to plastics' heat resistance, parts consolidation capabilities (lowering labor costs) and dimensional stability. Applications include computers (e.g., personal, notebook, laptop and other types), calculators, word processors, facsimile machines, printers and other products. Other uses include video display terminals, keyboards and paper trays. Plastic competes primarily with metal in the business equipment market. However, advantages of plastic housings over metal ones include lighter weight, greater Antistatic Packaging Applications for Conductive Polymers Because the average automobile has between ten and 20 computer chips regulating Item functions ranging from ignition and spark plug timing, to air bag deployment and antilock braking systems, motor vehicles also provide a significant market for Electronic Component Shpts (bil $) lbs/mil $ shpts conductive polymers. Electronic component technology changes rapidly and continuously, and as such, suppliers of key materials such as polymers must stay abreast of these changes in order to compete effectively. Growth in research and development activity is being driven by increasingly demanding product purity and performance SAMPLE PAGE specifications, the inability of some key products to meet the needs of nextgeneration electronics, and the need to meet stringent environmental criteria without compromising performance characteristics. Other efforts in the conductive polymer industry revolve around heightening product quality, reducing production costs and expanding product lines. In the EMI/RFI arena, research emphasizes enhancing proprietary additives technologies and improving the synergy between resin and additive combinations. Applications for carbon nanotubes (fibrils) are also increasing while research progresses on inherently conductive polymers (ICPs). Hollow carbon nanotubes, thousands of times smaller than carbon fibers, allow the establishment of conductive properties at very low concentration levels. They also eliminate static buildup and do not slough off, making them ideal for cleanroom environments. In motor vehicle and industrial applications, parts made from nanotube composites can be electrostatically painted without needing a conductive primer. The major threat to nanotube composite growth is its high cost relative to carbon fiber and other additives, currently about $50 per pound. However, as production capacity increases, prices will decline and applications are expected to expand rapidly. Inherently conductive polymers (ICPs) include polyaniline, polypyrrole, polyacetylene, polycarbazole and polythiophene. Their high cost and processing Order form on last page 9
