Use plastics Stop being a singleton!
Z W Why eliminate? Our aim: Eliminate all plastic waste in the ocean by preventing the use of single use plastics. Reduce? - This is important but likely to be unpopular. It is hard to change people s attitudes. Recycle? - Also important but can never eliminate waste, only reduce it. Recycling is also energy intensive. Reuse? - The most important option for a circular economy.
K F A P Every year in the UK, 490 tonnes of plastic packaging is used to wrap cucumbers for our supermarkets. (Sky News) Around the world, plastic consumption has risen from 5 million tonnes in the 1950s to around 100 million today. (Plastic Stats) Approximately 4 trillion plastic bags are used around the world every year yet only 1% are returned to be recycled. (Waste Management Northwest) In 2015, Plastic packaging made up 52% of all plastics thrown away! (Earth Day)
F S P A Z W & The Zero Waste Shop, Totnes: Their objective: to raise awareness of smart consumption and to work to refuse use of single-use plastics. Their practices: Slogan: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot. Sells items loose. Nothing comes packaged in a bid to reduce the use of plastics and establish a habit of reusing containers.
F S P A Z W & The Real Food Store, Exeter Local, Organic, Ethical : Dedicated to achieving the goal of zero food waste. Opposed to the use of air-freighted goods. Uses fresh produce, which minimises the need for plastic packaging. Naked Necessities, opening in Exeter this summer: The clue is in the name. This shop wants to sell all of its goods naked without plastic packaging.
C -M Plastic microbeads: a term used specifically in cosmetics A single cleansing product can contain as many as 330,000 microbeads to 95,000 microplastic ingredients are released into the environment with every single use of cosmetic products. The UK government passed legislation in October 2017 to ban the use of microbeads in cosmetic products, and the products are expected to be banned from sale from July Natural ingredients instead of microbeads.
T C Companies that reuse/recycle containers (so far): Lush~ black tubs return, unwrapped, recycled aluminium containers, biodegradable plastics and paper wrapping, clear and recyclable bottles. Holland and Barrett~ Plan-it Green Project 2007-environmental sourcing, free from harsh chemicals, aim to be carbon neutral, own recycling centre (95% recycled), no plastic bags from Boots~product life-cycle consideration, web-based tool that scores 24 environmental and ethical indicators of a product.
P -O S Refillable Stations and Electronic Dispensers: Machines stationed in shops with whole range of companies. Can search through companies or choose product based on preferences or needs. Credit can be added via app/at checkout. Incentives for use~ discounts, convenience, novelty. Based on the Freestyle, microchip technology implemented by Coca-Cola, the sale of reusable bottles for drinks and cosmetics.
T Around 50 million tons of electronics were discarded worldwide in the last year alone. In the EU, only 45% of electrical waste must be collected Solutions? Large scale and small scale. Technology Exchange Schemes: Turning in your old devices and getting some money in return. The devices are then either resold, refurbished, broken down into modules/parts or recycled. For example Samsung and Apple...
T Apple Apple offer up to 355 for a smartphone and up to 735 for a computer. Daisy, the disassembly robot, recovers the materials from up to 200 iphones an hour. Currently Apple only recycles high value materials, but it has committed to creating a closed loop system.
T SAMSUNG Repurpose old phones to reduce waste and expand the Internet of Things. Team of 11 experts came up with innovative ways of upcycling phones. Encouraged people outside the project to join - over 6000 subscribed to notifications.
O S? Street Share Sharing items that aren t necessarily required in every household and learning how to repair them. Our ideas included: Garden equipment Cars Tools Kitchen items such as food processors Social benefits: cooperation and sense of community. Economic benefits: pay less for technology. Environmental benefits: use less plastic!
C Our beliefs: Our aims: Plastic is an incredibly versatile material Consumption of single-use plastics is an important environmental issue that needs to be addressed FOOD & COSMETICS: Zero Waste shops, Plastic Free Packaging and Dispensers TECHNOLOGY: Exchange Schemes, Community Share Who we are: A UK-based charity that creates monetary incentives for food, cosmetics and technology businesses, as well as communities, to fulfill our aims on a large scale, for a wide range of sectors.
