2 This product specification document describes the Aqua Metrology Systems ( AMS ) THM-100 technology platform for trihalomethanes ( THMs ) monitoring, a near-real-time system designed for drinking and waste water applications, configured for on-line installation at a water distribution/treatment plant or at remote locations in the distribution network (for example at storage reservoirs/tanks). An optional feature of the technology is a novel accelerated online THM Formation Potential measurement method for samples of a treated water source (e.g. at the exit of the WTP), that can be empirically configured to generate THM levels predictive of the same water at some distant network location several days in the future. The fully-automated method takes advantage of the residual disinfectant and reactive organic matter already in the water supply, but forces an acceleration of the formation of the disinfection by-products including THMs by heating the water sample for a short period of time, to avoid the delay of several days waiting for the same reaction to occur at the water s naturally-lower ambient network temperature. The technology supports optional hardware for queuing grab-sample analyses of water samples in bottles. In this manner, samples can be collected from elsewhere in the distribution network or the treatment plants. Other samples can be created or prepared for specific purposes, for example to assist in pilot-studies of alternative water treatment operations, or for quality control validation of the THM-100 technologies. In addition, the THM-100 analyzer provides metrology information for direct process control and measurement statistics for improved quality of drinking water General Specification. Applications: General Capability: (1) Total trihalomethanes and the percentage of dominant THM specie in water samples. (2) Accelerated THM Formation Potential (THM-FP) measurement to enable prediction of THMs in a network. (1) Ability to detect and quantitatively measure total trihalomethane and dominant trihalomethane levels in water, (2) provide warnings when levels approach user-defined concentration limits, (3) provide routine periodic data reporting, (4) facilitate system and status inquiry over the customer network, and (5) support operational control per customer requirements. page 2 of 7

3 Brief Summary of Method of Analysis: A Purge and Trap followed by Thermal Desorption into a reaction mixture that generates a red solution (a modified Fujiwara Reaction). The kinetics of the colorimetric assay is used to determine the THM concentrations and speciation. Self-Calibration: Sample Ports: Unit self-calibrates using on-board THM standards every 2-3 weeks (by default, but configurable). Calibration changes are typically < 1%. Normal configuration: One online sample port and either a grab (Bottle) sample add-on or a second online port. A maximum of three sample ports: Non-standard configurations include up to three online sample ports or two online ports with one grab sample port, or one online port with two grab sample ports. All these variants have been tested and fielded. Throughput/ Cycle Time: Typical throughput (used for reagent consumption specifications) of one analysis every four hours. Quantitation Limit is defined in Section Assumes sample THM speciation follows a natural formation ratio: a. For example, a speciation profile 60 : 27 : 12 : 1 ( CHCl 3 :CHBrCl 2 : CHBr 2Cl : CHBr 3) satisfies this requirement, and these accuracy specifications would apply. b. Examples of THM sample speciation that do NOT satisfy these restrictions for accurate quantitation would include (but not limited to) any sample with equal quantities of all four THMs (25:25:25:25), and samples of either 100% CHBrCl2 or 100% CHBr2Cl. Upon enquiry, AMS can offer further assistance and guidance for appropriate samples to validate the instrument s performance. page 3 of 7

4 3.0 Facilities Requirements at the Installation Site Water Supply: Compressed Dry Air: Waste Water Drain: 5 < 100 psig (6.9 Bar or 0.69 MPa) Preferred range psig ( Bar, MPa) No flow-rate is specified, other than supplied and plumbed so that the stagnant water volume exceeds no more than 250 ml (for water pressures greater than 20 psi). For water pressures at ~ 5 psi, the dead-volume in the tubing and plumbing should not exceed 50 ml. Installations with larger stagnant/dead volume en route to the THM-100 typically require a continuous flow of sample through the THM-100 to have the sample be "current". Max of 1.3 STP (during periods of flow, approx. for 40 min/analysis) psi supply (2-6.9 Bar) ( MPa) If the facility is without clean, dry air, an oil-free air compressor can be provided with the unit. < 0.5 L per analysis (or < 3.0 L / day typically) The wastewater is composed exclusively of flush -water direct from the source, and the water sample post-analysis (dechlorinated with small quantities of ammonium). SUPPLY: o VAC, single phase, 10A/5A, 50/60 Hz, 150 VA (typical), less than 10% fluctuations in nominal supply voltage. o Facility should provide an accessible, external Amp breaker and AWG (3-2 mm conductor diameter) wiring via conduit. THM-100 OPERATIONAL DEMAND: o VAC, Hz o <575 VA max in normal operation, o Max in-rush current < 70 A Electrical: AIR-COMPRESSOR: o Electrical supply per specifications of compressor model UNINTERRUPTABLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS): o Interruptions to the power-supply, even briefly, can cause computer shutdowns or faults, and (on rare-occasions) electrical and mechanical faults that might require service to restore operation. o To minimize interruptions to the THM data and to reduce the probability of interventions to restart the instrumentation, AMS recommends the installation of a UPS. 5 SCADA/MODBUS: Cellular Telemetry (or other internet access): Exhaust: SCADA via 4-20 ma closed-loop, max-4 channels available for THM data and instrument status and alarm conditions (some configuration available upon request). MODBUS communications available upon request The THM-100 implements a scheduled secure protocol, typically 6 transmissions per day via a cellular modem, that supports the following functionality: o AMS s Remote Health Monitoring of the instruments operational status, logging of data (temps, pressures, times, sensors), calibration parameters, alarms and events. This is an essential feature of AMS s service support, and can be used to trigger service activities before the condition might impact the reliability of the THM data, AMS can also notify customers of alerts with the facilities at the install site, such as low water or air-pressures. o Secure cloud-hosting of THM result data for the customer s convenient online access, in the event that SCADA output connections from the THM-100 are unavailable. In the event that the cellular signal strength is weak at the site of the THM-100 installation (e.g. underground or deep within a building) it is strongly recommended that the customer assists AMS or its rep in implementing a solution (e.g. providing an external location for an antenna with an extension of the coaxial cable). Please discuss with AMS a range of options. Not applicable (process vapors are vented through an internal activated charcoal filter). 6 Volumes of Reagents: Availability: Reagent Waste: Each analysis requires ~ 4 ml total reagents, plus 4 ml of cleaning water. System stores sufficient standards and reagents for up to three months of use under 24/7 operation, at 6 analyses per day. Available through AMS or local distributor/representative. Included in service agreement or per purchase order documentation. < 6 L/quarter (at 6 analyses per day), stored on-board the instrument, and removed/disposed quarterly per local regulations. Please make arrangements with your service representative. Composition of the waste is ~50:40:10 (Water: Acetonitrile: Picoline) For disposal, the waste is characterized as Non-Halogenated Organic / Aqueous and Basic 6.0. For systems with the grab-sample hardware installed (for bottle samples) this is typically mounted externally on the lower-left side of the bottom cabinet. The estimated quantification limit (EQL) is defined under SW-846 as the lowest concentration that can be reliably achieved within specified limits of precision and accuracy during routine laboratory operating conditions. The Minimum Detection Limit (MDL) definition as used by ASM is also defined in the same EPA Method with the exception that Aqua Metrology Systems uses a fixed ratio of 5:1 (Quantitation Limit to MDL). The specific wording of the method is as follows: The EQL is generally five to 10 times the MDL. However, it may be nominally chosen within these guidelines to simplify data reporting. For many analytes the EQL analyte concentration is selected as the lowest non-zero standard in the calibration curve. Sample EQLs are highly matrix-dependent. The EQLs in SW-846 are provided for guidance and may not always be achievable. page 7 of 7
