Why Care?

Effective Use of Energy Efficient Lighting In Residential Applications

Effectively Use of Energy-Efficient Lighting Basic Principals for Residential Lighting What are we lighting, and Why are we lighting it? What Are the Important Elements of Residential Lighting Different Techniques for Different Spaces How ENERGY STAR Lighting Can Help You

What & Why All too often we light without understanding what we are lighting, and why we are lighting it: To assist people to perform a task? Reading, cooking, sewing, workshop For safety and/or security? Staircases, corridors, outdoor lighting To accent or highlight? Pictures, statues or knickknacks, architectural features, piece of landscape For Ambiance or Aesthetics To set a mood or improve/compliment the aesthetics of the space

What and Why Only when you understand what you are lighting, and why you are lighting it, can you determine the appropriate light source, the quantity of the lighting, the appropriate light fixture, and the proper layout. Which Fixture Belongs in The Basement or Closet? Which Fixture Belongs in A dining Room? While this may seem over simplified, the selection of the wrong fixture for the application is a common problem

Lighting Quantity First, understand the primary task typically performed within the space. Only then can you determine the proper quantity of light. The same light levels are not needed in all spaces: Moving through a hallway typically only requires 5 to 10fc Watching TV in the family room requires less light than reading (30 to 50fc) The light level needed to inspect and prepare food in the kitchen is higher than the level needed sit and eat the food

Lighting Quality Next, consider whether the light level for the task is needed throughout the entire space. If a higher light level is needed in only one area of the space, significant energy can be saved by putting the light source closer to the task. Photo courtesy of Light, Light, Light A low wattage under cabinet light can provide the necessary light level needed for food preparation, without having light the entire kitchen to that level.

Lighting Quality Next, understand the secondary tasks typically performed within the space in order to determine the proper quantity of light. Space Primary Secondary Hallway Movement Accent pictures Bedroom Sleeping, dressing Reading, make-up Kitchen Family or Living Room Food preparation, eating Watching TV, socializing Homework, board games at kitchen table Reading What secondary light sources can be used for the secondary tasks?

Lighting Quantity Energy efficiency in residential lighting is not dependent only on the efficiency of the lighting fixture. It is also dependent on: The appropriate number of fixtures used within the space Providing the proper light level at the lowest possible wattage Using secondary sources so that the wattage is only used when needed. Simply converting 50 recessed fixtures to a more energy efficient fixture is not effective, energyefficient lighting, if 12 fixtures can do the job.

Quality Considerations

Quality Considerations Basic Quality Considerations: Appropriate Size Color Rendering Color Temperature Performance Style, Aesthetics, Finish Using the right fixture or combination of fixtures for the task.

Appropriate Size Balance the fixture size to the space: Use a smaller fixture in a 2.5 wide hall than in a 4ft. wide hall. Simply using the same size fixture everywhere can waste energy. Too large of a fixture makes a space look small. Consider distance from ceiling and distance from floor for both the visual image, and safety. Place fixtures to help balance the space.

Appropriate Size and Spacing Photos courtesy of Light, Light, Light

Color Rendering Color Rendering the ability of a light source to make people and objects appear natural. Rated on a scale of 0 to 100. The sun has excellent color rendering properties design your homes for maximum daylight (windows, skylights). Incandescent has very good color rendering, but is not energy efficient When selecting light sources, be sure the source has a minimum of 80CRI.

Color Temperature (CCT) Color Temperature is a measurement in Kelvin that indicates the hue of a specific type of light source. Often referred to a warm or cool temperature. Incandescent sources are typically in the 2700 to 3000 Kelvin range (warm). When selecting an energyefficient light source, select a color temperature that is consistent with the rest of the lighting in the home.

Performance Purchasing/installing an energy-efficient light source should not mean sacrificing good performance. Light should come on instantly No flicker or hum Has the fixture been tested and verified by an independent third party to be sure the light source will not overheat within the fixture? Does the product have an extended warranty?

Why use ENERGY STAR Residential Light Fixtures?

ENERGY STAR Brand Influence

Why ENERGY STAR? The American public trusts ENERGY STAR as the national symbol for energy efficiency to guide their purchasing decisions, save them money, and protect the environment Homebuyers want energy-efficient homes, and ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures contribute to the home s efficiency and help lower energy costs Qualified fixtures are environmentally responsible and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions ENERGY STAR is more than just energy savings. Fixtures must meet high performance standards

Why ENERGY STAR Qualified Fixtures? Choosing qualified fixtures means manufacturers have designed for the light source: More likely to have correct sized lamp Lamp will not stick out of the fixture creating an undesirable aesthetic look The appropriate type of glass (e.g., frosted) will be used The fixture will be designed for the CFL, and performance of the lamp will be optimized as lamp/ballast is tested in the fixture Improper application of a screw-in CFL in a ceiling fan

ENERGY STAR Qualified Fixtures Overview Over 160 Fixture Manufacturing Partners 21,708,000+ fixtures shipped in 2008 with 11.2% market share (preliminary) Nearly 25,000 qualified models Approximately 1,000 qualified new models per month Over 7,000 qualified GU24 fixtures Over 400 qualified GU24 replacement models Every finish, every style, for every room in the house

ENERGY STAR Qualified Light Fixtures Benefits Qualified light fixtures use about 75% less energy than incandescent lighting saving energy costs over the product s lifetime. The bulbs used in qualified light fixtures produce about 75% less heat than incandescent bulbs reducing home cooling demands. The bulbs used in qualified light fixtures last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs great for hardto-reach fixtures. The bulbs used in all indoor and many outdoor qualified light fixtures use pin-based, products providing permanent energy savings. Excellent color rendering ( 80 CRI) means colors look natural

Residential Light Fixture Program Approach: Source Efficacy X

GU24 Integrated Lamp Similar to a screw-base CFL, but instead of a screw base the ballast connects to the GU24 socket with pins Easy, one unit replacement when either the lamp or ballast fails eliminates consumer pin confusion when purchasing replacement lamps Because ballast and lamp are integrated, overall length is shorter allowing for better fit in a variety of fixtures Standardized for interchangeability between manufacturers 10,000 hours vs. 8,000 hours 38

GU24 Replacement Availability Available nationally Retailers include The Home Depot Lowe's Ace Hardware Menards Amazon 400+ qualified lamps to choose from including various color temperatures, wattages, etc.

Why ENERGY STAR Qualified Fixtures?

Growing Interest in Fixtures Light fixtures represent one of the largest savings opportunity in the home (NOTE: nearly 15% of an average annual household utility bill is lighting) Hard-wired fixtures lock in energy savings for the long term As models average ~2 sockets/fixture with some models featuring 4+ sockets, ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures offer substantial savings Integrated system design ensures: Optimal lamp sizing and positioning Better light distribution and color characteristics Less risk of early failure 41

Features and Benefits Complete fixture, ballast, and bulb Less Heat = reduces air conditioning costs Less Energy = lower utility bills Excellent color rendering ( 80 CRI) = colors look natural Dedicated pin-based bulbs = longer lamp life than incandescent Electronic Ballast -- Flicker-free, no hum or buzz. Ballast must meet heat test criteria to avoid pre-mature failure. Must be easily replaceable. 2-year warranty = customer security Instant-on = customer satisfaction Laboratory verified = quality control, independent third party testing.

Features and Benefits: Outdoor Qualified Outdoor Fixtures: Integral Photocell Auto shut-off during daylight hrs Reduces energy by using an efficient light source or motion sensing incandescent Electronic ballast, instant-on (CFL) 2 year Warranty Laboratory verified CFL Motion Sensing Incandescent

Why Offer ENERGY STAR Qualified Fixtures? Benefits for the Home Builder: Distinguish your homes from your competitors Consumers increasingly value environmentally responsible options Energy efficient lighting is environmentally responsible Over 25,000 models to choose from Free marketing tools available from ENERGY STAR Qualified fixtures cost a bit more up front but energy savings create a positive cash flow for years to come Offering environmentally responsible options improves your company s image

New GU 24 Products The Faux-Can Keyless Sockets 26 watt 10,000 hour flat disk that mounts flush to the ceiling using a standard fixture box with a twist and lock GU24 connection. Requires no ceiling holes, no heat loss or gain through openings. These keyless sockets in both open and covered options use GU24 technology. Economical way to provide ENERGY STAR qualified light fixtures in closets, garages, basements, etc.

Determining Eligibility

Identifying Qualified Products The following methods can be used to identify ENERGY STAR qualified residential screw-in compact fluorescent lamps and fixtures: ENERGY STAR qualified product list Packaging Invoices Lighting Package Documents We will discuss each option but individual utilities and/or energy efficiency program sponsors may have their own requirements for verification.

ENERGY STAR Lists ENERGY STAR Website includes a qualified product list for each product category. Currently there are separate lists for CFLs, residential light fixtures, and light emitting diode (LED) fixtures. The qualified product lists are the most accurate way of verifying qualification because: New fixtures receive qualification on an ongoing basis Some fixtures may become disqualified due to quality or marketing violations Specifications are updated from time to time resulting in the elimination of previously qualified fixtures

Packaging In order to understand ENERGY STAR packaging (labeling) requirements, it is important to understand the difference between some of the most commonly used logos: Promotional Marks: Used to promote ENERGY STAR without specific reference to an individual product

Packaging Partnership Marks: Used to denote the company s ENERGY STAR Partnership without reference to a specific product.

Product Certification Mark The Certification Mark is used as a label on products, homes and buildings that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR performance guidelines.

Examples of Certification Marks Mark on Qualified ENERGY STAR Home Mark on Package of ENERGY STAR Qualified Product Marks Used in Advertising: Certification Mark Placed Next to Qualified Product General Mark Used to Explain What ENERGY STAR is.

Packaging Continued Summary for Packaging & Promotional: In advertising and promotional purposes, the Mark can be placed next to a picture of the box. On qualified products, the Certification Mark must be placed on the box. ***Partnership marks should not be used on packaging***

Invoices In order for the builder to receive incentives in some program sponsors require an invoice showing product qualification. This is the responsibility of the supplier, but the invoice can help you identify the ENERGY STAR products included in the home. qty product brand description 12 abc12000w XYZ ENERGY STAR 2-lamp ceiling mount

House Package Many suppliers include pictures and descriptions for builders with their house pack proposals and pricing Model DR1889 bronze Model AZ2400 bronze This page from the showroom s house pack plan identifies the fixture, model number, fixture location, and whether the fixture is ENERGY STAR qualified. This is an excellent tool to help the builder and the rater identify the number and location of qualified fixtures. The model numbers can also be used to look up the fixtures on the ENERGY STAR qualified product list.

Old Logos & Fraudulent Usage Product packaging or marketing materials using the old ENERGY STAR logo, may no longer actually be ENERGY STAR qualified. It is always best to check the qualified product list when in doubt. This logo is no longer a valid ENERGY STAR logo.
