3 NHSO Newsletter Knowledge Exchange Programme The Office has established a quarterly newsletter the first newsletter was circulated to all HSE staff by . June 2015 Next newsletter circulated to all HSE staff September 2015 Climate KIC is Europe s largest initiative to support climate change. A key focus of the programme is to build and share knowledge to tackle barriers/ issues to achieve change. NHSO is working with Climate KIC to develop Study Visits between the NHS and HSE. Waste Prevention Green Healthcare Programme (GHP) In 2014, NHSO Partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Both now Jointly Fund the Green Healthcare Programme Green Healthcare Programme National Waste Prevention Audits GHP has surveyed over 40 Acute and Non Acute hospitals Developed waste prevention Best Practice Guidance, Benchmarks and Case Studies specifically for dealing with Risk Waste reduction, Food Waste prevention, etc. All Available on the NHSO Website GHP Training and Education Programme Education & Awareness In June 2015 the NHSO issued an invitation to the Acute Hospitals to participate in Free Training and Education Programme, dealing with:- Healthcare Risk Waste Reduction Healthcare Food Waste Reduction Maximising Recycling and Reducing Landfill Healthcare Water Conservation

4 GHP Education & Awareness 23 Acute Hospitals volunteered for the training programme. On 16 th September The First Awareness Day was held in the Coombe Hospital Green Healthcare Water Green Healthcare Water Water Audits carried out in Acute and Community Hospitals, in the Cork Wexford Limerick Kerry Develop Nationally the first Irish Health Sector Water benchmarks (litres per patient bed day) per type of hospital. 6 Corporate Sustainability Management Services (CSMS) Corporate Sustainability Management Services (CSMS) To develop a National Energy Bureau Service Stage 1 is complete with the National Procurement programme for Energy Suppliers Stage 2 is well advanced with the Energy Awareness Campaign in partnership with the OPW Next Steps:- Develop National Programme of Works and Carry Out Gap Analysis. Energy Awareness Programme Optimising Work Energy Awareness Programme Participating Healthcare Buildings The NHSO in partnership with the OPW are running a national energy awareness campaign in HSE buildings The initiative aims to change staff behaviour towards energy conservation within our buildings. Sustainability Management Concession Contract (SMCC) SMCC This is Energy Efficiency Contracting utilising the ESCo funding model The Capital Investment is Funded by the Energy Savings

7 Sustainability Project Development Sustainability Project Development Stage 1 Project Identification / Desktop Survey Quantify energy saving objectives and decide if energy efficiency project is needed. Determine if energy contracting is acceptable, and identify projects. Stage 2 Initial appraisal Establish the business case and decide the most appropriate energy contracting option. Stage 3 Detailed appraisal Establish how the contract will be structured, financed and procured and analyse the project financials. Stage 4 Procurement Procure the service using Competitive Dialogue. 8 Sustainable Transport Policy Smarter Travel Workplaces The Sustainable Transport Policy will assist the HSE in Achieving its: Target Renewable Energy Supply Directive NHSO working with the National Transport Authority and Department of Transport, who run the Programme Aims to promote and support more sustainable travel habits Staff, Patients and Visitors. The Workplace Wellbeing Policy Eco Health & Wellbeing Health and Wellbeing Subgroup established. Synergies exist between public health issues, health inequalities, transport, improving the sustainability of the HSE and climate change. Promote walking, cycling, public transport and physical activity achieve public health benefits they also achieve sustainability benefits including reduction of carbon emissions, cleaner air, reduced traffic congestion and reduced noise..
