3 OVERVIEW OF THE ITALIAN BIOHEAT SECTOR The share of RES in Italy is 8% (NAEP) Among RES wood is the second source in term of primary energy contribution (30% of RES) In Italy about 15 million of natural gas and oil boilers are installed at domestic scale, consuming around 18 Mtoe. Only 5% of those boiler were classifiable as highefficiency heating systems The Italian target, based on Directive 2009/28/CE, is to reach the share of 17% of RES within 2020 Final heat consumption 144 Mtoe (2007) 30% of heat is used in the domestic sector (45 Mtoe)

5 WOOD CHIPS MARKET Power palnts for eletricity generation (45 plants, 450 MW e ) 1,8 Mt of wich 1 Mt imported Big district heating (86 plants, 400 MW t ) 18 of these plants are CHP plants (13,5 MW e ) 0,41 Mt Small district heating and domestic boilers across the most developed Regions (5) there are around 9000 boilers mainly (90%) with capacity less than 100 kw. The total installed power output is 630 MWt with a consumption of around 0,4 Mt. ECONOMIC VALUTE: 150 MILLION EURO/YEAR

6 WOOD LOGS MARKET 19.1 Mt are consumed by 4.4 million of household every year >70% of wood logs are burn in lowefficiency domestic heating systems (e.g. open fire places and tradition wood stoves. just 7.5% are used in modern heating appliances (innovative stoves) < 1% are used in modern wood boilers

7 WOOD LOGS MARKET 42% of final users produce itself the needed amount of wood logs yearly used, while 32% bought it in the local market (2008). At national level it doesn t exist trustable statistics regarding both forest wood log exploitation and import addressed to firewood market Recent study has estimated a yearly forest exploitation of 5.65 Mm 3 and an import of ~ 1 Mm 3 logwood (2009) Italy is the first wood logs importer at Word Wide level The logwood import is mainly from Eastern European countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, etc...)

8 WOOD PELLETS MARKET Italy is a typical stoves market (like the U.S.A.) showing extremely dynamic development Wood pellets are distributed mainly in small bags (15 kg) In contrast to most other successful European pellet markets the Italian market is not the result of specific dedicated energy policies but of high taxes on fuel oil and increasing gas prices. The Italian pellet market is young and not mature yet The market problems are typical of young markets: lack of quality, know-how, transparency and norms/rules It is STILL difficult to reach a balance between the growth of demand and supply

14 HOW TO BOOST BIOHEAT IN ITALY? In Italy the bioheat sector has still a great developing potential The availability of woody biomass is very high, particularly in those areas where the number of modern boilers and CHP are quite rare yet Woodfuels energy prices are highly competitive related to fossil fuels price Subsidies framework offers both for privates and public bodies interesting opportunities to support investments in this sector Awareness of potential investors is grown up thanks to several successful show cases already running, which may act as reference models to be replaced in those regions at the moment with a less developed bioheat market
