EXERGY s ORC systems stand out in the market for uniquely utilizing the pioneering technology known as the Radial Outflow Turbine (ROT). Conceived by EXERGY and launched in 2009 this cutting-edge innovation has quickly become a gamechanger in the market bringing a consistent growth and success to the company. With two manufacturing facilities in Italy and in Turkey and more than 120 employees worldwide, including engineers, product managers, technology specialists, sales professionals, service and quality managers, EXERGY carries out every step of the design and manufacturing process internally. R&D is a key distinguishing feature of EXERGY s approach to any new project. The company is always committed to innovation and to new applications of the ROT technology. EXERGY has a current installed and under delivery power generation capacity of over 300 MW and a global annual turnover of approximately 100 million USD (2015 figure). EXERGY is a subsidiary of SECI ENERGIA, a sub-holding of the Maccaferri Industrial Group. The Maccaferri Industrial Group is an Italian corporation active across a range of industrial sectors with an annual turnover of 1.3 billion USD, counting 57 production plants and more than 5,000 employees across the globe (2014 figures). milestones 3

3 who we are the technology applications after sales service 1 21 TURBINE GENERATOR ELECTRICITY OUT 1 The heat exchanger recovers heat from the primary source transferring it to a heat transfer fluid (HTF) 2 The organic fluid warms up in EVAPORATOR the preheater and vaporizes in the evaporator, extracting heat from the HTF, which returns to ORC PRIMARY HEAT SOURCE INPUT HEAT EXCHANGER PREHEATER the heat exchanger 3 The vapour expands in the turbine, which produces electricity through 4 the generator 4 Recuperator recovers the 6 RECUPERATOR CONDENSER 5 PUMP PUMP COOLING TOWER high-temperature heat still available in the vapor at turbine outlet transferring it to the organic liquid before the preheater 5 The condenser extracts the low temperature heat and turns the vapor back into liquid state 6 The pump increases the fluid pressure sending it to the recuperator, thus closing the cycle. Organic Rankine Cycle technology is employed efficiently for power production from low to medium temperature heat sources in the range of 80 to 400 C. The working principle of an ORC is similar cycle. The main difference is the use of organic substances as working fluid, such as hydrocarbons and refrigerants, instead of water or steam. The organic working fluid has a lower boiling point and a higher vapour pressure than water and is thus able to use low temperature efficient way. The fluid is chosen to best fit the heat source according to their differing thermodynamic properties, thus obtaining higher efficiencies. Moreover ORC can also be an ideal solution when the size of the application is too small for to the most widely used steam Rankine heat sources to produce electricity in a more a steam power plant to be feasible. Working principle of an ORC system 02/the technology ORGANIC RANKINE cycle Choosing an ORC system gives several advantages over steam technology: Higher efficiency for lower temperature applications long lasting expander thanks to low peripheral speed of the turbine and to the absence of a liquid phase during expansion COMPACT and automated equipment meaning no operator attendance needed FAST start and stop procedures Ideal flexibility for cycling environments Modular configuration simplifying transportation and installation Design flexibility Operational flexibility for superior off-design performances No water consumption lower costs for foundation, assembly and maintenance Reliable system maintenance meaning long product life 4 5

4 EXERGY ORC SOLUTION UTILIZING THE INNOVATIVE RADIAL OUTFLOW Designed by EXERGY, the Radial Outflow Turbine is a technology unique to EXERGY ORC power plants. EXERGY CEO Claudio Spadacini first conceptualized the idea of the ROT and launched it in the market and thus making a world first in the ORC industry. The pertinent technologies are covered by multiple IP rights and EXERGY continues to work on further advances and new applications of its technology. The key feature of the Radial Outflow Turbine configuration is the capability to convert the energy contained in the organic fluid into mechanical power with higher efficiency than the competing technologies on the market such as the axial or radial inflow turbine. TURBINE Exergy ORC power plants utilizing the Radial Outflow Turbine as expander give some additional advantages over the common benefits given by a traditional ORC solution: TURBINE EFFICIENCY / DESIGN ROT EFFICIENCY MULTISTAGE RADIAL OUTFLOW SINGLE STAGE RADIAL INFLOW Higher efficiency than the systems employing axial turbine Multiple pressure admissions possible on a single disk giving a cost effective solution Excellent match between the volumetric flow and the cross section across the radius 1, STAGE AXIAL The innovative higher efficiency No need for partial admission fewer limitations on cycle pressures less tip leakage and disk friction losses Minimum turbulence meaning maximum efficiency lower vibrations meaning longer life of the bearings Minimum 3D effects thanks to pressure DIFFERENTIAL FAST and easy removal of the mechanical group without fluid drainage or losses T AMB / T DESIGN efficiency graph 1 STATORIC DISK fixed to the casing, combines all the radially arranged statoric stages 2 ADMISSION DUCT introduces the fluid into the stage 3 NOSE CONE directs radially the fluid as it enters axially 4 MULTI STAGE ROTORIC DISK spins, capturing the energy in the fluid and radial outflow turbine turning it into mechanical power 5 MECHANICAL GROUP thanks to EXERGY unique technology can be easily extracted and replaced without fluid drainage or loss 6 CASING houses the turbine s components and forms the expansion chamber 6 7
