Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ministry of Mines Revised Estimates of Oil and Gas Reserves in Afghanistan February 2008 New Delhi 1
Major Oil and Gas Basins Of Afghanistan There are two proven and three potential oil and gas bearing basins in Afghanistan 2
Two Proven Basins Afghan Tajik Basin, oil Amu Darya Basin, gas There are 500 prospects Oil and Gas Resources Amu-Darya Basin Principal Oil and Gas Field Locations Afghan-Tajik Basin Some known oil fields of indeterminate size Some large gas fields Most fields not operating Katawaz Basin Many potential fields not yet evaluated (favorable structures) in the north and northwest Exploration was completed on sixty seven (67) structures As a result, six (6) oil and eight (8) gas reservoirs have been discovered 3
Three Potential Basins Katawaz Basin, South Helmand Basin, Southwest Herat Basin, West Exploration will resume in these basin as soon as the Ministry finishes restructuring These basin are filled with very thick sedimentary complexes reaching up to several kilometers Presence of source rocks and reservoir rocks is confirmed by geological mapping 4
Major Gas Reservoirs of N and NW Afghanistan Khvajeh Gogerdak, Jar Quduq, Yatimtaq, Khvajeh Bulan, Juma, Bashe Khurd, Jungali Kalan, and Chughchi The gas was estimated to be around 120 billion m 3 Oil and Gas Resources Amu-Darya Basin Afghan-Tajik Basin Principal Oil and Gas Field Locations Some known oil fields of indeterminate size Some large gas fields Most fields not operating Katawaz Basin Many potential fields not yet evaluated 5
Major Oil Reservoirs of N and NW Afghanistan Angut, Aqdarya, Qashqari, Bazari Kami, Zamrudsai, and Ali Gul The oil reserves had been estimated to be 45 million tons Oil Reserves in Million Tons 6
Known Reserves of Coal, Gas & Oil Sheberghan Mazar OIL FIELDS Konduz GAS EXPLORATION Herat COAL MINES Kabul Jalalabad Kandahar 7
USGS and Afghan Ministry of Mine Collaboration The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Afghanistan Ministry of Mines (MoM) cooperatively assessed Afghanistan s undiscovered oil and gas reserves The purpose of the assessment was to provide energy data required to implement the rebuilding and development of Afghanistan s energy infrastructure. 8
Scope of the Assessment Collect scientific data and analyses for energy resource assessment and development Train native professionals to conduct future assessments independently Provide the Afghans with information needed to manage their own petroleum resources Provide basis for future investment in exploration and development 9
Results of the Estimates Before After Estimates have increased the oil resources by 18 times and more than tripled the natural gas resources Undiscovered gas reserves are 444 billion m 3 Undiscovered oil reserves are 219 MMT. Undiscovered liquid gas condensate reserves range from 20 million m 3 to million m 3 0 Gas Oil Oil and Gas Reserves Increase after Assessment 10
Hydrocarbon and Minerals Laws Mineral and Hydrocarbon Laws, passed in 2005 These laws support private investment in both sectors and call for establishment of: Inter-ministerial Oversight Committee (IMOC), a Cadastre and Regulatory body, a market-based Inspectorate, and, enhancement of research capabilities and data acquisition of the AGS 11
Essence of Hydrocarbon and Minerals Laws MoM is the regulatory body for oversight of the sector IMOC will review and give final approval of all contracts MoM has the regulatory support from: Cadastre Inspectorate Corporate Service Office 12
