OECD Copenhagen From Green Attitude to Green Action
Planet in crisis "Climate change is without comparison the most serious threat to humanity ever." Al Gore
Green IT A project and initiative by IKT-Norway Brand neutral resource center and portal for information, reports, statistics, advice and guidance regarding the topic: Climate and IT. Channel for information about energy efficient and climate friendly products and environmental solutions within IT.
The fact is... that it requires 240 kg of fossile fuel to produce one PC...* and that this produces 700 kg of CO2...* that 50% of all hardware related costs are energy costs * that 2% of the world's total CO2 emissions originate from the IT industry ** * Figures from IDC ** Figures from Gartner
But we also have to emphasize... That the IT industry is not just a part of the problem, but also a part of the solution. Companies are actively working on the development of energy saving products and solutions. Without IT, many of the solutions for a cleaner climate would be impossible Climate monitoring Calculations Automation Remote control Optimized resource utilization Reduced travel activity Power and heat reduction E-health Virtualization Paper minimization
According to the Gartner, Environmentally environmentally friendly IT will be priority it number one friendly IT for enterprise technology strategies in One of the major contributions from computer intensive companies is to invest in energy stingy servers, according to Gartner. Gartner thinks environmentally friendly IT should be put at the top of the agenda of all businesses regardless of sector.
Are the energy costs associated with the use and operation of the company's IT systems included in the IT budget? Ja 9,3 8 of 10 respondents answered that the energy costs associated with the use and operation of the company's IT systems, are not included in the IT budget. Nei 76,7 9.3% of respondents answered that the energy costs associated with the use and operation of IT systems are included in the IT budget. 14% of respondents replied "don't know". Vet ikke 14,0 26
What can the authorities do? Public authorities should and must set environmental criteria for public procurement. Including energy and environmental criteria. As a part of the Government's climate promise, public procurement ought to be in the lead with respect to environmental criteria. An energy assessment of all public server parks/computer rooms should be implemented. New equipment pays for itself in 2 years Energy used on IT ought to be associated with the IT budget Intensify statutory environmental reporting in annual reports! Seminars and knowledge upgrades for public sector CIO's, virtualization, not very widespread in the public sector. Do not forget SMEs. Norway introducing Miljøfyrtårn
Measures against SME's Norwegian authorities are launching, with ICT-Norway among others, a certification scheme for SMEs. It is important that small and medium sized companies also get tools to enable them to put environmental certification on the agenda. The scheme is called "Environmental lighthouse". h Environmental focus ought not just be something for the big and strong.
By 2011, vendors to major companies will have to document their environmental measures through an inspection process. Without this documentation, they will not achieve status as preferred supplier. Greenwash is not sufficient Megatrends
What can the industry do in Norway We are investigating joint transportation of goods for all members of ICT-Norway We are putting the environment and energy on the agenda through Green IT We want energy branding of IT products Push to make Norway a lighthouse with respect to environment and energy Active environmental research Norwegian companies will stipulate environmental requirements also abroad Nordic Eco-declaration
To be introdused: Criteria in public procurement of ICT Environmental criteria in public procurement for 16 groups of products and services Initiative: Ministry of Environment Undertaken by GRIP (Green in practice) In cooperation with ICT-Norway Part 1: general advice on environment and procurement Part 2: basic criteria Energy (Energy star) Life span / durability - for example spare parts available after production has stopped Part 3: award criteria Energy: strictest level of Energy star Chemicals: neither lead nor brom
Virtualization An egg of Columbus utilizing the resources far better, without requiring investment in a bunch of new equipment. One of the best moves an IT department can make More machines on the same hardware means: Reduced power consumption Reduced need for cooling Hardware Virtualization 17
What can we do? Norway can become an IT operations superpower. We may attract international computer centers We have rich access to secure subterranean mountain halls We have secure power supply We have clean power We have a stable political climate and stable security policy While major parts of the world have heat problems, we have cold problems.
New IT solutions save paper: Tilbudsweb.no EUR 75 million + Need for new distribution solutions Increasing environmental focus 92% access to internet/broadband
e-zine environmentally friendly publishing solution Magazines (login/magazine kiosk, teaser, automatic magazine/ad) Books - teasers/presentation Offer catalogs Annual reports Brochures (available there and then) Presentations Ads/automatic magazines Customer magazines User manuals Photo albums Product sheet/binder
Video conferences IT provides new opportunities Video conferences provide new opportunities for saving CO2-heavy travel. Here, the public sector has lead the way One county administration has reduced its travel activities by 60%
Norway will assume responsibility also abroad Offshoring is spreading Green IT wants Norwegian IT companies buying services abroad to also set environmental requirements and contribute to environmental thinking in the offshoring partner.
But we are faced with challenges Why does a server going all out use almost as much energy as a server on standby. Why are wireless networks always activated. Why are they not activated when someone wants to connect?
We assume responsibility. WEE 87% of collected quantity was recovered in 2007 Environmentally hazardous substances: - 61 tons of components containing asbestos - 70 tons of lead batteries - 35 tons of condensers containing PCB tons of mercury components tons of oil and waste containing oil - 1,723 tons of brominated flame retardants t - 4,237 tons of plumbiferous glass from TVs/monitors f f i t d f di - gasses from refrigerators and freezers corresponding to emission of 585,000 tons of CO2!
Profitable recovery in our WEE-takeback system Recovery of scrap metals provide significant energy savings relative to production of primary metals -total savings equivalent to close to 700 million kwh of electrical energy. This corresponds to the electricity consumption of 35,000 Norwegian households. In 2007, Elretur contributed to a total reduction of emission of greenhouse gasses corresponding to 770,000 tons of CO 2. Based on a quota price for emissions of 160 [1] NOK/ton, the value of the emission reduction may be calculated to be NOK 120 million, i.e. close to the total cost of operating the return system for EE waste. [1]Price level for emission rights for CO 2 in January Source: Nordpool.
A bright idea? Green IT is far more than a bright idea to sell a few more servers. Green IT deals with CSR and our common future An of course, it deals with market adaptation We are proud to be the first industry to have united around such a project.
