11 What is VDI? Desktop virtualisation Separates desktop environment from the physical desktop Delivering desktops from the datacentre Use a terminal to connect to back end Similar to Terminal server or "Citrix 11

12 What is VDI? Physical desktop needs a client The Virtual Machines (VM) require an agent Could use physical blade PC's instead of VM's at the back-end Licencing is typically per user 12

Payback is a over a long term period Consider re-use of existing desktops to reduce project implement costs and hence reduce payback period Costs associated with supporting users spread across numerous sites not considered within figures, if this was included this could again improve the ROI and reduce payback period 41
