2 Welcome to London Array London Array is the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world. Comprising MW wind turbines and with a capacity of 630 MW, the wind farm can deliver sufficient electricity to meet the needs of over 500,000 British homes. DONG Energy UK is focused on offshore wind power, oil and gas exploration and commercial energy sales. We have invested over 5bn in the UK since 2004 and are the world leader in developing and building offshore wind. 3 Where is London Array? London Array is situated 20km off the east coast of Britain in the outer Thames Estuary. N ESSEX Felixstowe W S E Clacton Southend THAMES ESTUARY Chatham Whitstable Ramsgate KENT Electricity is fed into the grid near Whitstable and the operations for the wind farm are based in Ramsgate. May 9 iven reen y its lders 2009 Onshore construction begins 2011 Offshore construction begins and first turbine foundation installed
4 Ownership London Array is owned by four shareholders; a consortium involving E.ON (30%), DONG Energy (25%), La Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (25%) and Masdar (20%). How big is it? The area covered is 100 km 2 This is equal to 14,000 Southwood Stadium pitches, home of Ramsgate FC. London Eye The Gherkin 3.6MW Turbine From the seabed to the tip of the blade, it measures up to 172m, almost as high as the Gherkin. The diameter of the blades, at 120m, is similar to that of the London Eye. January 2012 First turbine erected December 2012 Major construction complete April 2013 Fully operational July 2013 London Array is formally opened by Prime Minister David Cameron
5 How much electricity does it produce? The Project has a capacity of 630 mw Innovation - what makes this Project special? At 630MW, London Array is the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world. Its capacity is similar to a medium sized gas power station. This means that each year it provides enough power for over 500,000 homes. 1 How do we maintain the turbines? The turbines are designed to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for more than 20 years. To maintain this availability, technicians regularly service each turbine. The technicians travel to the wind farm by boat, however, if there are problems or breakdowns, it is often possible for us to resolve issues remotely. The operations and maintenance building was designed by West Midlands based architecture firm BBLB, and achieves BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Excellent status. It also has BREEAM grade A+ internal finishes and has been constructed using the latest building methods, as well as sustainable and recyclable materials. What has been the impact on the local economy? 90 permanent jobs were created in the maintenance team. The operations and maintenance base at the Port of Ramsgate was built by Mansell Construction Service and the project was managed by their Maidstone office using local contractors where possible. There was a supply chain event held in June 2010 to highlight the potential supply chain opportunities available for local businesses. Ongoing contracts during the operations and maintenance phase were placed with Kent suppliers. 1 In 2014 the project generated 2,236,046 MWh. Assuming average household consumption of 4.2MWh per year. Source: DECC, 2014, Energy consumption in the UK, Average electricity consumption per house in 2013 was 4192kWh.
6 Community benefit fund 850,000 An community benefit fund was established when the onshore substation was built which paid for the following projects: 200,000 for nature conservation, donated to and handled by Kent Wildlife Trust. 300,000 for community benefits, donated to and handled by the specially established Graveney and Goodnestone Trust. A new car park and road crossing for Graveney Primary School. 2,000 a year each for three local schools to spend on extra-curricular activities (with a link to sustainability, environment, engineering etc). A 10-year university bursary scheme to help fund one local student a year through university. What issues did we encounter? During the Project we have faced several challenges, for example the design code for foundations that support the turbines, was changed during Project development, which meant we had to redesign the foundations. Handling this change to the quality standard we were working to was probably the biggest challenge, along with the variance in seabed conditions, water depths and seabed movements. In addition, we also increased the number of installation vessels involved to secure progress.
