Why marine renewables A dedication to renewables as a source for clean energy production Over 164 years of marine experience (shipping, oil and gas; construction, operation, services...) An existing and growing market where many different business opportunities may be explored What is learnt from developments has many benefits: General knowledge-sharing and efficient development of competences Risk reduction through testing and trials Early identification of new business opportunities 3

BOLT-2-WAVEHUB Project OBJECTIVE: Integration of the elements of BOLT development to make pre-commercial deployment at Wave Hub a reality in 2013 ACHIEVED BY: 1. Reducing the cost of BOLT units 2. Reducing risks & cost of deployment, installation and retrieval

The FabTest Site FabTest is a two square kilometre test site situated within Falmouth harbour, between 3 and 5 km off shore in Falmouth Bay The site offers water depths of 20 m to 50 m and different seabed types: rock, gravel and sand. Tidal variations approx 4 m. FabTest is providing a fast, flexible, low cost solution for testing of wave energy devices The site is leased from The Crown Estate and has a Marine Consent for testing subject to permits issued by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC). The site is operated by FHC and University of Exeter 8
BOLT Lifesaver an introduction Electrical conversion -Energy storage -Control systems -Power burn off (no grid connection) Communication -internet link to onshore control room Autonomous power take-off units -modular, enclosed -serviceable - 80 kw installed capacity each Winch -production mooring system Hull -steel -enables easy maintenance
Concept outline

The importance of pre-commercial testing Understand operational costs and revenues, i.e. state of readiness of the technology Need to determine: Power performance Maintenance requirements Survival behaviour Power performance Maintenance requirement

Project Supplier Chain Many suppliers, from Siemens to self employed local fabricators Quality of relationship not a function of company size or business sector FOL takes a ship-owners attitude to relationships with suppliers they should be longlasting, trustful and mutually beneficial
Project Experiences with Supply Chain Varied! High points Good experiences have come from unexpected directions these have been suppliers that have listened to what we need and proactively reacted to assist Those with experience in the marine sector have been most forthcoming on building relationships
Supply chain experiences - lows Organisations that do not perform at - or strive for - normal professional standards. Inability to price or invoice accurately, Poor quality (and reluctance to accept liability and fix problems when they arise), Lack of interest in what our ambitions or constraints are, Lack of commitment to timescales
Supply Chain biggest concerns Health and Safety - too many have struggled to accept even the projects modest requirements although they are based on industry best practice Some have been reluctant to invest time and resources in H&S systems, and have been resentful when we raise such issues Lack of professionalism in sales pitch and back office functions Misunderstandings about the level of development and risks presented
Some Supply Chain Conclusions.. Even small local companies can operate at global standards of client relations and be pro-active in proposing solutions. This is not a function of organisational size Take operations planning & general H&S seriously there is still too much complacency in the work environment; There is already a limited choice of facilities and hence a need to find ways/lobby for continued support for protection and promote diversity of investment in of those industrial & dockyard sites that do exist
