3 Evolving Energy Scenario Fossil fuels are expected to dominate the world s energy supply portfolio for some decade to come. However satisfying future energy needs while meeting the challenge of energy security and mitigating the risk of climate change has brought energy conservation and a number of new fuels and manufacturing technologies to the forefront of public discussion. Among these, wind, solar and biofuels are growing rapidly, albeit from a small base. Other technologies, such as HYDROGEN, are considered to hold promise, but face substantial challenges in terms of costs and large-scale implementation. Eni is involved in hydrogen technology, through h research and the manufacture of the product, for both conventional and evolving use.

5 Hydrogen Technology Development at Eni Innovative Hydrogen Manufacturing SCT-CPO (Short Contact Time Catalytic Partial Oxidation). One Step Hydrogen: a combined technology for CO 2 capture and H 2 production developed in the context of CACHET(*), a multi-sponsored project of the EU 6th Framework. Fundamental research on H 2 photogeneration. Innovation and Sustainable Energy in Fuel Retailing Agip MultiEnergy Service Station Programme. Field Testing of FC Systems Demonstration of 1-5 kwel SOFC systems: aprojectsponsoredbymiur(**)and coordinated by CNR-ITAE (***). Demonstration of on board application of PEM FC systems for boat propulsion: a project sponsored by Regione Veneto. Carbon Sequestration and Storage Technology Study and demonstration of safe CO 2 storage in depleted reservoirs. Participation in the CO 2 Capture Project (CCP). 6 Innovative Hydrogen Manufacturing SCT-CPO CPO Technology under development on a pilot plant scale up to 500 Nm 3 /h suitable for: Stationary applications of various size. Processing very different kinds of feedstock (including liquid feedstock). Applications requiring compact equipment and operating flexibility. The technology can be used for H 2 generation in refineries and for distributed H 2 generation for multiple uses (including car refueling and power generation via stationary FC systems). A prototype unit could be built in a Eni s Refinery in the next few years.

7 Innovation and Sustainable Energy in Fuel Retailing The project is developed in the frame of awidereni s initiative aimed at reducing local environmental impact of current transportation fuels and developing alternative fuels, including Hydrogen. Implementation of prototypes of self-sufficient sufficient - eco-efficient efficient MultiEnergy service stations located inside or close to urban areas, is under way: Collesalvetti (Livorno) in co-operation with Tuscany Regional Authority Frankfurt (Germany) Zero Regio Project - EU VI Framework Mantova (Lombardia) Zero Regio Project - EU VI Framework Agip Magliana Nord (Roma) HCNG service station - in cooperation with Lazio Regional Authority- First Italian service station offering a (30/70) Hydrogen-Natural gas fuel mix in addition to conventional liquid fuels and fuel cell grade H 2.
