Knowledge to Power Wave & Tidal Energy
OFFSHORE WAVE & TIDAL WIND ENERGY The UK is a global leader in wave & tidal energy. We have created ground-breaking testing facilities, and the best marine energy resource in Europe. This untapped resource has the potential to provide up to 20% of the UK s electricity by Currently we only have 10 megawatts installed, but the science is proven to work and the Government believes gigawatts is possible by We need support to turn wave & tidal into a commercial-scale industry.
Energy from our waves and tides 1
WAVE & TIDAL ENERGY can provide up to 20% of the UK s electricity supply. This figure is based on the Carbon Trust s Marine Energy Accelerator, which found that in the UK 21TWh of tidal stream energy could be captured and around 50TWh of wave energy each year. This amounts to around 20% of the electricity supplied in the UK. In 2015 there are currently around 10MW of wave and tidal energy devices being tested in UK waters. This number varies depending on test programmes. Source:
The UK s wave and tidal industries are leading the world
WAVE & TIDAL ENERGY with up to 50 cutting edge devices in operation under UK waters, or in development
5 The UK wave & tidal sectors support up to 2,000 jobs This is based on a RenewableUK research report, Working for a Green Britain, which found 1,724 direct jobs in the sector. A recent Government report estimated marine energy in England alone supported 2,000 jobs, including its supply chain. Source: (p.34) bis size-and-performance-of-uk-low-carbon-economy.pdf (p.71)
WAVE & TIDAL ENERGY With the right support this could grow to 23, over the next decade This is based on the high deployment scenario in Working for a Green Britain, detailing 676MW of capacity in 2023, supporting 9,148 direct, and 13,873 indirect jobs. The medium deployment scenario of 328MW by 2023 projects a figure of 12,107 combined direct + indirect jobs.
7 and add 6.1bn to the economy. This figure is taken from the 2010 RUK report called Channelling the Energy, which looked at three different scenarios for market share and deployment by 2035 compiled by Carbon Trust, the Public Interest Research Centre (PIRC) and a survey of relevant RenewableUK members at the time. Sources: (p.2)
WAVE & TIDAL ENERGY Over 70% of people are consistently in favour This is shown repeatedly by DECC s quarterly Public Attitudes Tracker where they survey a representative sample of over 2,000 members of the British public. The 15th iteration of the survey shows support for wave & tidal technologies at 73%, opposition at 4%. All the 14 previous surveys show support has remained above 70%. Source:

Our vision is for renewable energy to play a leading role in powering the UK. RenewableUK is the UK s leading renewable energy trade association, specialising in onshore wind, offshore wind, and wave & tidal energy. Formed in 1978, we have a large established corporate membership, ranging from small independent companies to large international corporations and manufacturers. Acting as a central point of information and a united, representative voice for our membership, we conduct research, find solutions, organise events, facilitate business development, advocate and promote wind and marine renewables to government, industry, the media and the public.
