1 MULTIFAMILY NET-ZERO SEMINAR ARCH 4150/5550 Spring 2013 Dan Handeen COURSE SYLLABUS Instructor: Daniel Handeen, Research Fellow, Center for Sustainable Building Research Affiliated Organization: Habitat for Humanity Twin Cities (HFH-TC) Urban Home Works (UHW) GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Northside Net-Zero Seminar is a semester-long inquiry into the nature and feasibility of affordable zero-energy multi-family homes. Students will learn about collaborative sustainable design through readings, community interaction, precedent studies, programming, and systems research. Using this knowledge, they will set the tone of the project by developing a schematic design for a net-zero multifamily home. They will work with the Studio Module during the second half of the semester by providing timely research reports, design feedback, technical expertise and written specifications. This course will expose architecture students to the cutting-edge of multifamily home design, provide opportunities to engage the larger design and non-profit community, and provide an invaluable learning experience. Note: a parallel module, Arch5550 will provide design support but is independent from this course. They are not pre-req or co-req to each other. However, it is highly recommended that both courses be taken together. COURSE STRUCTURE Coursework will be a combination of individual and group work. This will take the form as precedent research, public presentations and discussions, in-studio charrettes, writing, technical analysis and drawing, and will culminate in the collaborative design of a Net-Zero Home. The success of this seminar relies on a clear set of building requirements and energy goals as set down by HFH-TC and UHW before the beginning of the semester. These will include, but are not limited to: Building program, square foot requirements, construction budget, site location and solar assessment, and any preferred construction techniques or assemblies. Keep in mind that the course structure and assignments may change throughout the semester based on the dynamic nature of the project. Before any changes are made, a thorough discussion will occur and all grade and scheduling implications will be taken into account. Precedent Research What is Net-Zero? How does HFH-TC and UHW define Net-Zero? How do we? Research and analysis of built Net-Zero projects in cold climates from idea to execution Design Parameters Introduce HFH-TC and UHW requirements and program Meet the clients, community members and visit the site Initial site analysis and solar assessment Analysis of typical HFH-TC and UHW homes and methods of construction

2 Energy Requirements How much energy is enough and how will we produce it? Develop an integrated strategy for energy use Create an energy, budget, Issues of heating, cooling, lighting, etc. Consider lifestyle choices and changes Design Integration Produce 2 or 3 group schemes to present to HFH-TC, UHW, the neighborhood group, and design professionals for discussion Craft verbal and visual presentation Energy analysis and modeling Initial cost estimate by HFH-TC and UHW Break tasks down equally amongst studio participants Manage work flow and expectations Group Systems Research I Research one of the following systems in a group: o Flow: Mechanical/Electrical/Renewables/Water/Waste o Form: Building shape/energy modeling o Envelope: Foundation/Wall/Roof/Openings Prepare written report and present findings to class Make recommendations to the class Group Systems Research II Further investigate the materials and systems required for our design Prepare written report and present findings to class Make recommendations to the class and to the studio module Building Specifications Craft building specifications for each of the home designs based on research and through communication with the Multifamily Net-Zero Module Research Paper and presentation Research and investigate a Net-Zero topic in more detail Prepare research paper and present topic to class LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this course, students will be able to: Understand the conceptual and technical implications of a net-zero multifamily home Work in a collaborative setting and foster a consensus driven process Integrate design work with other disciplines in support of a common goal Communicate design ideas to non-architects Foster meaningful relationships with community partners Experience the breadth of the architectural design process from conception to working drawings Create conceptual and technical drawings and models in support of a Net-Zero concept Understand the financial implications of design and finesse construction budgeting

4 ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES Due to the nature of the course, any absences, excused or unexcused, must have written permission of the instructor arranged in advance. The School of Architecture policy for legitimate absences states: Students shall not be penalized for absences due to unavoidable or legitimate circumstances. Such circumstances include, but are not limited to: verified illness, participation in intercollegiate athletic events or other group activities sponsored by the University, subpoenas, jury duty, military service, and religious observances. Students are responsible for providing documentation to the instructor to verify the reason for the absence. This policy does not extend to voting in local, state or national elections. GRADING The University of Minnesota Senate mandated + and - grading symbols will be used with those portions of the course employing the A-D grading system. Grades will be established by performance on the following: Net-Zero Precedent Research 10% Group systems research I 15% Schematic design 20% Group systems research II 15% Research paper and presentation 20% Written Specification 10% Participation 10% Note that individual participation and improvement is worth 10 percent of your grade. This is important, since it can increase your score by a full letter grade. Attendance, personal development, participation, ability to take and give criticism and general inquisitiveness are included in this category. Informal, in-class pinups will be part of many seminar sessions, and all students are expected to come to class prepared with work that responds to assignments and addresses previous class discussions. General criteria for performance in this course (along with specific learning objectives given for each assignment) include: - clarity - thoroughness - depth of research and synthesis - personal improvement throughout the semester - responsiveness to criticism - willingness to take risks - participation in class discussions - attendance - quality and craft of presentations (visual and verbal) LATE WORK Late work will be accepted without penalty only in cases of documented excused absences as defined above. INCOMPLETE WORK Incomplete work will not be accepted without the instructor s prior approval and written agreement as to the revised due dates and grading policy. The grade of incomplete can only be given if the work is substantially complete and the student has documentation of legitimate circumstances. EXTRA CREDIT WORK Students are not allowed to submit extra work in an attempt to raise his or her grade. 5 MISCONDUCT All students are responsible for conduct in conformance with the University of Minnesota Student Conduct Code. Scholastic misconduct is broadly defined a any act that violates the right of another student in academic work or that involves misrepresentation of your own work. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not necessarily limited to: cheating on assignments or examinations; plagiarizing, which means misrepresenting as your own work any part of work done by another; submitting the same paper, or substantially similar papers, to meet the requirements of more than one course without the approval and consent of all instructors concerned; depriving another student of necessary course materials; or interfering with another student s work. SEXUAL HARASSMENT University policy prohibits sexual harassment as defined in the December 1998 policy statement, available at the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. Questions or concerns about sexual harassment should be directed to this office, located in 419 Morrill Hall. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY The College of Design has the right to retain any student project whether it is for display, accreditation, archive, documentation or any other educational or legal purpose. In addition, the College of Design reserves the right to reproduce and publish images of any student work in collegiate publications, printed or electronic, for the purpose of research scholarship, reaching publicity and outreach, giving publication credit to the creator/student.
