2 INTERCONTINENTAL DOHA, AS PART OF ITS GREENING STRATEGY, UNDERTOOK LED RETROFITTING OF THE ICONIC HOTEL, USING GE S LAMP SOLUTIONS. LED BY ITS HERITAGE, EXTENSIVE ARRAY OF PRODUCTS, DIRECT VOLTAGE SOLUTION, AND LOWER PAYBACK PERIOD, GE LIGHTING EXECUTED THE PROJECT TO THE CLIENT S SATISFACTION.

3 Our Customer. InterContinental Doha, a part of the global InterContinental Hotels & Resorts hospitality chain, is an iconic property with a spectacular waterfront location. With over 258 rooms including luxury suites, the hotel also has several popular restaurants and meeting & conference facilities, making it one of the busiest in the city. Naturally, energy consumption of lighting is also high. In line with the focus of the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts group to green the hotel and adopt sustainable practices, retrofitting energy-consuming lights with LED lamps was undertaken.

4 The challenge. The installation that was being used was GU5.3 MR Halogen lamps. The challenge was to fit the GE s LED solutions into the overall aesthetics, without compromising on the original design and appearance of the hotel. To demonstrate GE s competency, the company installed a mock up installation at the beginning of the project, which underlined the differential that was brought to the project.

5 The solution. GE s LED solutions are proven to provide up to 80% energy saving compared to traditional technologies, offer high lumen/watt efficiency, have long-rated lifetime, low failure rate and assures maintenance savings. GE Lighting deployed its range of LED solutions including the GU10 7W and 4W LED Decor Candle. Some 5,000 pieces of GU10 7Ws and 500 pieces of 4W LED Decor Candles were used, which matched the aesthetics of the hotel. A 100% retrofit solution, the 4W LED Candle is a decorative range that has a premium lifetime of over 17,000 hours and consumes 80% less energy than standard sources. It delivers incandescent light effects, which add to the hotel s aesthetic appeal, and can be fitted with all existing fixtures. Also mercury free, it is more shock and vibration resistant than standard bulbs. The GU10 7W is a substantial energy saver; it replaces 50W halogen product by consuming only 7W of power respectively, while producing a 300lm beam. It was chosen for the accent effect, for display and general lighting across the hotel. At low operating temperatures of 20 to 40 degree C, it is also mercury free, thus adding to the environmental sustainability.

6 The adoption of GE Lighting s LED solutions has helped achieve a reduction in energy consumption at the hotel by 82per cent in guest rooms lighting, and electricity bills by 2 per cent. Overall, the aesthetic appeal of the property has been elevated too, while maintenance support needed has been reduced drastically. The hotel stands to benefit at a relatively low payback time of only 18 months considering saving in airconditioning loads and cost for replacement.
