2 Winner: Antalis In this category the judges looked to reward the publishing company that has taken its sustainability performance to the next level and/or shown a long term commitment to managing and mitigating its impact. The judges looked at the company s performance within a number of strands such as: waste; energy; carbon emissions; buildings and transport, social impact; initiatives benefiting the local and wider community. The judges looked for a clear explanation and proof of how any policies, initiatives, practices or processes have given benefits and results. "Antalis' approach is very extensive, covering all aspects of sustainability. They have strong environmental initiatives and also have an extensive commitment to the broader requirements of corporate social responsibility. Recognising their close interaction with end-users of paper, they have developed a simple yet transparent semi-quantitative Greenstar evaluation system to help publishers choose eco-responsible papers."

UK Winner: Haymarket Media Group In this category the judges looked to reward the publishing company that has taken its sustainability performance to the next level and/or shown a long term commitment to managing and mitigating its impact. The judges looked at the company s performance within a number of strands such as: waste; energy; carbon emissions; buildings and transport, social impact; initiatives benefiting the local and wider community. The judges looked for a clear explanation and proof of how any policies, initiatives, practices or processes have given benefits and results. The judges would like to say that this was an extremely tight category to judge. Subsequently, as well as a winner they have chosen to highly commend Time Inc for their impressive efforts to manage their environmental impacts and make a positive contribution to society. However, the overall winner for this category won over the judges with their quantified and very comprehensive set of initiatives with specific targets and outcomes. Examples include their commitment to a wide variety of industry accreditation, paper reduction through their commitment to the FollowMePrint solution, roll-out of smart metres during 2015, and the Haymarket Skills Academy, growing from 6 apprentices in 2014 to 20 apprentices by These are tangible and accountable actions which make Haymarket the standout entrant in this category.

4 Shortlist: Haymarket Media Group Hearst Magazines UK Winner: Hearst Magazines UK This award showcases the exciting new initiatives or technologies being developed to tackle sustainability issues. The winning submission will be an innovative product, service or initiative that can demonstrably offer significant environmental and/or social benefits. It is estimated that air pollution in the UK contribute to approximately premature deaths in the UK each year. Many of the UK s cities experience poor air quality. With this in mind, and considering its location in central London where air pollution can be particularly unpleasant, Hearst Magazines has implemented an innovative initiative which utilises air pollution monitoring data to provide live information to its staff. Via an easy to use app, staff can for example plan their route to work so as to minimise their exposure to pollution levels particularly helpful to those keen to reduce their environmental impact by walking or cycling as much as possible. This initiative is truly novel, and shows both a commitment to understanding environmental issues and to enabling the company s staff to take action and improve their own well-being.

5 Winner: Gary Charlton, Haymarket Media Group The person winning this award will have excelled in furthering sustainability or ethical practices in the magazine industry to the benefit of others. This individual will have a dedication to all matters green or ethical and will have sought to introduce a culture of best practice in these areas where ever they have been able to have influence. Gary Charlton has overseen the environmental performance of Haymarket s magazine publishing activities for several years. Under his direction, they have continuously achieved accreditation to ISO14001 and pushed the compliance envelope by working with and adopting other emerging standards and systems. Building on this work, Haymarket has shown how commitment to environmental management can deliver efficiencies and win new business. Gary s efforts during the last year have been particularly impressive. Following the departure of the operational environmental lead, Gary has continued to provide the strategic direction for environmental issues whilst also making sure that the day-to-day actions are fulfilled during a particularly busy time as Haymarket worked towards achieving the ISO50001 Energy Management System. At the same time, Gary has continued to be an active member of the PPA s Sustainability Action Group and has pushed forward with application of the PPA Carbon Calculator to better understand the carbon impact of Haymarket s publications. All in all, Gary is a worthy winner of the PPA Sustainability Champion of the Year award for 2015.
