2 Multiple Magazine Retailer of the Year (up to 500 stores) WAITROSE 2016 was another great year for magazines in Waitrose, outperforming the market by 5.1% in value and 2% in volume. The new and buyer recommends promotional units were developed following the PPA s Retail Safari and have seen positive customer reaction that has been clearly reflected in sales performance. During 2016, Waitrose further increased the profile and presence of the category through secondary space, for example increasing the number of checkout spaces available. Innovative optimisation included the introduction of an urban range, outperforming other branches by 5%, and store-specific ranges such as the hugely successful performance of +32% at Little Waitrose at Kings Cross Station. A six title promotional bay has been introduced at larger branches, and magazine space has been increased in 23 branches with an increase in magazine slots from 5,890 to 8,714. Waitrose outperformed the market again for Christmas TV Listings by value and significantly improved availability. Waitrose has again demonstrated its commitment through a range of successful initiatives in-store and by taking a collaborative approach to working with industry partners. The winner in this category is the multiple retailer who has most successfully demonstrated: A dedication to the cause of selling more magazines Enhancing the shopping experience for the magazine consumer (e.g. through store appearance, shelf layout, information, innovation, customer service) A commitment to offering a good choice of titles to its customers (e.g. the development of Shop Save and/or Home News Delivery (HND) services)

3 Multiple Magazine Retailer of the Year (over 500 stores) TESCO Tesco has continually improved its performance in the market over the last twelve months and has shown a collaborative approach in developing the magazine category. It puts the customer first in everything it does and this has helped to ensure that the products and promotions in-store match the customer needs. Significant improvement has been shown particularly in the development of store signage and promotion, with new branded header boards rolling out across the estate. The Tesco buying team understands the value of customer choice and the range now has over 900 products. They have also increased the customer offer by creating more space in-store to display the growing categories of bookazines and partworks, and have supported partwork tests to help publishers develop new products. During 2016, Tesco set up new work teams with representatives from distributors and wholesale collaborating on category developments. In October, the PPA was invited to attend the General Managers Conference and representatives from each distributor manned the stand, speaking to over 1,000 store managers and colleagues. The Tesco buying team was nominated for this award by COMAG, Frontline, Marketforce and Seymour collectively.the judges said that the team has demonstrated a collaborative approach to promoting the category for customers and publishers. The winner in this category is the large multiple retailer who has most successfully demonstrated: A dedication to the cause of selling more magazines A commitment to offering a good choice of titles to its customers Enhancing the shopping experience for the magazine consumer (e.g. through store appearance, shelf layout, information, innovation, customer service)

4 Magazine Category Champion of the Year STEVE WORLEY, SMITHS NEWS, AT WAITROSE Since becoming part of the News and Magazines team at Waitrose in 2014, Steve Worley has demonstrated a highly-engaged approach, supporting operationally and setting up robust processes for the development of the total category. Steve quickly established positive personal relationships not only with Waitrose branch partners but also with distributors and publishers. The areas personally delivered and driven by Steve include promotional engagement and store compliance, operational excellence, range changes, and store operations. One of the key elements to the market performance of Waitrose s news and magazines category has been the delivery of effective SBR, and ensuring branches drive improvements in wastage. Steve has made a significant personal contribution to branches achieving this. Overall, Steve s dedication and support for new initiatives is beyond the call of duty. Steve has demonstrated excellence across all elements of the job, showing commitment from a grass roots level and positively influencing all of the key performance levers at retail. 5 Independent Magazine Retailer of the Year WARDOUR NEWS Located in the heart of London s West End, Wardour News is not just a newsagent servicing the local community and UK visitors, but has become a destination point for overseas customers looking to purchase niche and specialist magazines. Their extensive range of over 2,500 magazines is constantly under review so that they meet their customers needs. In 2016 they increased their shelving to accommodate a 10% expansion of the titles on offer. In addition to providing a shop save service, Wardour News also offers a delivery service for businesses and this is a growing area that they are actively promoting. Raj and his team have a passion for magazines that has undoubtedly helped them succeed where others are struggling. Their customer service is second to none and is regularly recognised on social media. This is a retailer that has embraced a broad range of marketing opportunities and grown their business through hard work and innovation. Wardour News has everything you want from an independent retailer. The winner in this category is the independent retailer who has most successfully demonstrated: A dedication to the cause of selling more magazines A commitment to offering a good choice of titles to its customers, including the development of Shop Save and/or Home News Delivery (HND) services Enhancing the shopping experience for the magazine consumer (e.g. through store appearance, shelf layout, information, innovation, customer service)

6 Best Sales or Marketing Initiative of the Year Magazines with up to 30,000 retail sales BEANO In 2016 Beano sold an average of 34,778 copies every week, an increase of 3.2% year on year, and a brilliant result for this 78 year old, iconic brand. As part of the overall strategy to drive retail sales, Beano created a bespoke promotion for Tesco with a Money Can t Buy competition offering readers the chance to win a day at the Beano office and star in their own comic strip. This exclusive competition was promoted on branded display units at till-points in 600 Tesco stores. The promotion, supported by Tesco, delivered a sales uplift of 75.6%. Beano demonstrated a commitment to retail sales, with an innovative and exciting promotion that delivered solid sales results.

7 Best Sales or Marketing Initiative of the Year Magazines with over 70,000 retail sales HELLO!, DKNY and Boots Tripartite Campaign HELLO! wanted to engage a wider range of consumers and push the HELLO! profile in store. The HELLO! creative solutions team designed this campaign to capitalise on the buzz around the launch of DKNY s new perfume Be Tempted in August 2016, and selected Boots because it is DKNY s biggest retailer. HELLO! is one of only 12 titles ranged in Boots, and is stocked in 500 stores. The campaign objectives were to encourage consumers to interact with the DKNY brand in-store and on social media, to increase awareness and drive sales of HELLO! in Boots, and to increase footfall. HELLO! supplied a coverwrapped issue with an offer for 7.50 in Advantage Points, and the promotion was carried in the subsequent three issues. In Boots, the promotion was highlighted with FSDUs and shelf talkers. The promotion was also promoted in all social media channels by the partners. There was an average uplift of 14.4% across the four issues, 1.1 million impressions on the digital campaign and a Facebook Live video reached 81,820 viewers. This promotion demonstrated an original approach and creative thinking. The campaign had print at its core and was supported by many other platforms. HIGHLY COMMENDED SAINSBURY S EURO 2016, PANINI The winner in this category is the company which has shown flair and innovation in the execution of a specific sales or marketing initiative in the last 12 months which made a measurable contribution to sale.

8 Outstanding Contribution to Magazine Retailing Andy Mills, Tesco Andy has been a pivotal part of the Tesco News and Magazines team for many years now, and over the last 12 months he has continued to show his passion and dedication to the category in a number of ways. In 2016, Andy was instrumental in bringing together the four main distributors to discuss the whole magazine range process to understand what works, what does not, and what more can be done. The benefits of this collaborative approach are already being seen, especially the implementation of vastly improved category signage with the use of a combination of brands and eye-catching imagery to bring the category to life. Last year Andy secured sign-off on a second range review change in the Tesco Express format, which had previously not been possible and often meant that the range was not necessarily relevant for the consumer some six months after implementation. This additional review opens the door for new launches in particular to secure significant on-going display opportunities. Working with his team, Andy has not only managed to keep the focus on offering consumers a great range of regular magazines, he has supported the need for additional bookazine solutions in-store, whilst also supporting a number of trials on both magazines and collectables. It is no surprise that the Tesco magazine category performance gradually improved throughout 2016 and, although some of this will have been from the overall performance improvement at the retailer, a significant contribution has been made by Andy s continued focus on offering Tesco customers a broad range of magazines (c900 across the estate) and working with publishers and distributors to maximise sales. This award recognises an outstanding commitment to the magazine category shown by an individual who has demonstrated consistent enthusiasm, dedication and support for the category.
