4 SUSTAINABLE BAMBOO Bamboo is a group of perennial evergreen (except for certain temperate species) plants in the true grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. Bamboo also ranges amongst the fastest growing plants in the world. Bamboo is capable of growing centimeters each day. Newer manufacturing facilities have begun using technologies to chemically manufacture bamboo fiber which is even more benign and eco-friendly. The chemical manufacturing process used to produce lyocell from wood cellulose can be modified to use bamboo cellulose. 5 ORGANIC COTTON Our organic cotton is from non genetically modified plants, certified to have been grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. Its production also promotes and enhances biodiversity. Cotton growers who make the transition to biologically based growing practices expect to not only offer a healthier and cleaner product, but also benefit the planet. 8 HEMP Hemp is the name of the soft, durable fiber that is cultivated from plants of the Cannabis genus. "Hemp" is also a name for the Cannabis plant. Some only associate hemp with the low tetrahydrocannibol (THC) strains of the plant, although this is a neologism. In modern times, hemp has been used for industrial purposes including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics and construction, health food and fuel with modest commercial success. Since 2007, commercial success of hemp food products has grown considerably. Hemp is one of the faster growing biomasses known, producing up to 25 tons of dry matter per hectare per year.. A normal average yield in large scale modern agriculture is about t/ac (air dry stem yields of dry, retted stalks per acre at 12% moisture). Approximately, one ton of bast fiber and 2-3 tons of core material can be decorticated from 3-4 tons of good quality, dry retted straw. For a crop, hemp is very environmentally friendly as it requires few pesticides and no herbicides.
