Sustainable supplies, equipment and services
Sodexo s approach to sustainable procurement is based on the Better Tommorrow Plan, our sustainability strategy to 2020, and combines economic, social and environmental considerations 1
Sustainable supplies, equipment and services The Better Tomorrow Plan Our worldwide sustainability strategy to 2020 Our mission is to improve the Quality of Daily Life of the people we serve and to contribute to the economic, social and environmental development of the communities, regions and countries where we operate. The Better Tomorrow Plan, our worldwide sustainability strategy to 2020, sets out our commitments and how we intend to achieve them. It is divided into three pillars: We Are this is about our core values, ethical principles and the fundamentals of Sodexo We Do 14 commitments to action on sustainability issues covering health, nutrition and wellbeing, local communities and environmental sustainability in our supply chain and operations We Engage this is our commitment to engage with our employees, clients, customers, suppliers, NGOs and other stakeholders to influence behaviour and performance where we operate, in our supply chain and beyond A Better Tomorrow starts Today Consumers Institutions Nutrition, Health & Wellness Local Communities We Are We Do We Engage We Engage Employees Suppliers Environment Clients 2
Our commitments There are five Better Tomorrow Plan commitments that are directly relevant to our non-food supply chain and that we seek to integrate in our procurement decisions: We will ensure compliance with a Global Sustainable Supply Chain of Conduct in all the countries where we operate by 2015 source and promote sustainable equipment and supplies in all the countries where we operate by 2020 reduce our carbon footprint in all the countries where we operate and at clients sites by 2020 reduce our water footprint in all the countries where we operate and at clients sites by 2020 reduce non-organic waste in all the countries where we operate and at clients sites by 2015 and support initiatives to recover non-organic waste We report on our initiatives and progress in an annual corporate citizenship report that is available on our website or by contacting corporate.citizenship@sodexo.com 3
Sustainable equipment and supplies We work closely with our office supplies partner on stationery sustainability. Together, we have established a number of efficient product switches and procurement processes that are monitored at quarterly review meetings. All of our office paper comes from sustainable sources either FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests or recycled sources. Using reports from our supplier, we monitor the percentage of products that have environment attributes. To ensure that we consistently improve on this measurement we have introduced a high level of product blocking and switching. We have recently also switched to using remanufactured toner cartridges in our printers. In 2011, we have also trialled the introduction of paper from 100% recycled sources. 4
all of our office paper comes from sustainable sources 5
6 all of our sandwich wedges are biodegradable
Sustainable disposables When looking at disposables, there are different options available to our clients: from biodegradable and compostable items to those made from recycled material that can in turn be recycled. Certifications We work with suppliers who use card from either FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) accredited sources. Biodegradable All of our sandwich wedges have a PLA (polylactic acid) film which makes the whole product biodegradable. Compostable We list a range of cups, tumblers and salad containers that are compostable, made from annually renewable resources, certified to EN13432, the European standard for compostability, and manufactured in the EU. We can also supply a range of plates and bowls that are microwave safe and manufactured from paper cup cuttings recovered from the manufacturers own facilities. These are also EN13432 certified. Recycled We list a range of plastic sandwich wedges, salad containers and other deli packaging items made from rpet (recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) from a minimum 50% PET from post consumer waste. 7
8 commitment to research and development allows us to continue investing in creating innovative solutions
Cleaning The super concentrated chemical formulations we use eliminate transportation of excess water, while innovations like no-rinse formulas, solid concentrates and demand for fewer wash cycles directly reduce the volume of water our clients use. Products that are effective at low temperatures and solid concentrates help to conserve energy. We reduce waste by using minimal packaging and recyclable or renewable materials where safety is not compromised. Our supplier s enzyme-based technology and commitment to research and development allow us to continue investing in creating innovative solutions that provide superior performance whilst minimising impact on our environment with non hazardous classifications. 9
Energy and emissions Electric vehicles Our joint liveried electric supply delivery vehicle is on course to make 2,200 deliveries to Sodexo locations, travelling 10,000 miles and delivering 934 tonnes in its first full year of operation. Energy efficient appliances Sodexo units have access to modern energy efficient appliances, where consideration is given to the whole lifecycle cost, including energy consumption, maintenance, consumables and proper disposal. The latest energy efficient equipment is safer, faster, purer and cleaner: Dishwashers that reduce energy consumption by using waste steam to heat the incoming water and cut water consumption by converting the steam into clean water and re-using it. Fryers that can heat up 37% faster, use up to 68% less oil, and consume 30% less energy. Ovens designed to be as energy efficient as possible, conserving fuel and helping to keep a balanced temperature in the kitchen. Fridges with advanced temperature monitoring technology to ensure constant temperature inside resulting in up to 25% reduction in energy consumption. Induction hobs that are 90% more energy efficient and cause fewer burns. Ventilation systems that filter and purify air so that no pollution is created. Our core equipment supplier operates an environmental management system that is certified to the ISO14001 standard. 10
we invest in energy efficient equipment that is safer, faster, purer, and cleaner 11
12 our Flush-wiser WC and Eco-shield devices can save up to 96% of flushing water
Water and effluents Water footprint We offer a wide range of products and services to enhance washrooms, support legislative compliance and help meet our clients sustainability targets. The range of products provided includes water saving devices that help reduce water consumption and bills, are friendlier to the environment, and keep washrooms hygienic, smelling fresh and clean. Management System can save up to 96% of water used in urinal flushing by using intelligent infrared technology. Eco-shield is a urinal sleeve that works using the latest in bioblock technology in conjunction with Flow-saver Urinal Water Management System to keep urinals smelling fresh and free from blockages. Flush-wiser WC Flush Control is a uniquely adaptable water saving device for WCs that can save up to three litres of water per flush without compromising hygiene. Flow-saver Urinal Water 13
14 we turn organic waste into power for our client s on-site fleet
Organic waste Sodexo is committed to reducing organic waste and driving initiatives to recover organic waste. We have partnered with our suppliers and developed both on and off-site capabilities to segregate and recover waste food, used cooking oil and green waste for conversion into energy, fuels and compost, including wormeries. These activities result in reduced reliance on traditional disposal methods and mitigate CO2 production. In 2009/10, working with one of our main suppliers, we increased the volume of food waste diverted from landfill to energy generation by 34% or 32 tonnes producing over 16,000kWh. One of our high-profile automotive clients now has the capacity to produce its own compost and power its on-site fleet of 22 vehicles from waste recovered from Sodexo s catering operations and some of its own manufacturing processes. Our UK food production business, Tillery Valley, delivers surplus fit for consumption food to FareShare, the national food poverty and food redistribution charity thus diverting waste from landfill and benefitting local community charities like centres for homeless people, refugee centres, rehabilitation centres, hostels and youth centres. 15
Non organic waste Sodexo works with partners to prevent waste, promote recycling and find a market for material we need to discard. The non organic material we cannot reuse within the business and which we have responsibility for is processed at specialist recycling facilities where it is considered a resource wherever possible. This means its value is kept in the marketplace and the environmental impacts of landfill avoided. We train our employees to high standards to use products and equipment properly and minimise waste. 16
our waste is reused, recycled or sold to divert it from landfill 17
What we do in our offices We aim to embed sustainable practices into our central offices, for example: recycled / sustainably sourced office paper bicycles for same day courier needs in central London recycled toner cartridges in our office printers office furniture recycling IT equipment recycling wherever possible under desk waste paper bins replaced with centralised recycling points all used cooking oil and food waste from our employee restaurants is recovered and diverted from landfill bottled water for hospitality in our offices has been replaced by filtered water in reused bottles and jugs 18
we recycle all office furniture 19
