3 The Department of Ecology s mission is simple: To protect, preserve and enhance Washington s environment. These are responsibilities of great magnitude and we need your help. Consider how your daily actions affect the environment and take an active interest in pollution prevention. This booklet briefly identifies areas of interest to dentists and provides some helpful information on how to reduce and manage waste at the source. This booklet is not intended to be a substitute for the state s Dangerous Waste Regulations. For up to date information regarding specific or regulatory questions, call your nearest Ecology regional office and ask for specialists in the following programs: hazardous waste, solid waste, water quality and air quality. We are here to help! Phone numbers are listed on the map below. (425) (509) (509) (360) This booklet provides disposal options for dentists within eastern Washington, for the following wastes: Amalgam Lead foil packets X-ray fixer and developer X-ray film Elemental Mercury See page 6 for a list of people to contact with your questions: County Moderate Risk Coordinators can answer questions about hazardous waste and infectious waste. County Health District offices can answer questions about hazardous waste and infectious waste. Waste Water Treatment staff can tell you if their facility has the capabilities to treat the wastes you might want to put down the drain. Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction Program 1
4 Amalgam: Dental amalgam is a waste stream of concern due to the presence of both mercury and silver. It should not be put down the drain or in the garbage or added to biomedical wastes. (Biomedical waste is incinerated.) Burning amalgam releases the mercury to the air. Proper disposal consists of either sending waste amalgam to a mercury reclaimer, or having a hazardous waste management company pick it up on site. The choice is yours. Either method may require a minimal fee. RECYCLERS Advanced Environmental Recycling Corp., PA (800) reclaimer and Bethlehem Resource Recovery Division, PA (610) reclaimer RECLAIMERS: Mercury Refining Co., Inc., NY reclaimer (800) D.F. Goldsmith, IL refiner (847) EnviroChem, MN refiner (612) Amalgaway, Inc. broker (800) Dental Recycling of North America, NJ broker (800) Strickland Refining Co., MN refiner (612) W.E. Mowry & Company, MN refiner (612) Recyclights, MN relcaimer (800) Mercury Waste Solutions, WI (414) HAZARDOUS M Group, Spokane, WA (509) WASTE Roar Tech, Spokane, WA (509) MANAGEMENT Safety Kleen, Pasco, WA (509) COMPANIES Safety Kleen, Spokane, WA (509) Safety Kleen, Auburn, WA (800) In Spokane, you may drop off your waste amalgam in the household hazardous waste area at any Spokane Solid Waste disposal facility. For packaging guidelines, call (509) Elemental Mercury: Mercury in its elemental form may be found in a dental office for use in amalgam. It is very toxic and if spilled, should be clean up immediately. Your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on mercury tells how to respond to a spill and clean it up. Handle mercury waste only by reclaiming with a licensed reclamation facility or by disposing through a hazardous waste vendor. (See vendors list above under Amalgam.) 2 Drilling for a Greener Practice A Friendly Guide on Dental Waste
5 X-ray Fixer: Spent X-ray fixer is a hazardous waste and should be disposed of properly because it can contain a dissolved silver content as high as 7,000 parts per million. You may want to call one of the waste management companies listed above, or contact a used fixer reclaimer. FIXER.999 Inc. Pasco, WA (509) RECYCLERS/.999 Inc. Spokane, WA (509) RECLAIMER: Standard Medical Imaging, Inc. Spokane, WA (509) Washington Photo, Spokane, WA (509) Safety Kleen, Auburn, WA (hauler) (800) Safety Kleen, Pasco, WA (509) Safety Kleen, Spokane, WA (509) X-ray Film: X-ray film, including film that has been processed, contains silver. Because of this silver content, processed x-rays that are no longer required for record purposes should be recycled. Check with your film supplier. Often they will accept unwanted film for reuse. Another option available is to offer scrap film to a precious metals reclamation facility. RECYCLERS: Advanced Environmental Recycling Corp., PA (800) Bethlehem Resource Recovery Division, PA (610) Mercury Refining Co., Inc., NY (800) Mississippi Street Metals, MN (612) D.F. 6 X-ray Developer: (Always keep waste developer and fixer separate) Usually, spent x-ray developer by itself can be disposed of down the sanitary sewer if your clinic is connected to a sewer system and you comply with the domestic sewage exclusion. However, you should contact your local wastewater treatment plant for verification (see page 6). Never pour developer or any other industrial chemical down the drain if your clinic is on a septic system. Unused developer and developer that has been mixed with fixer, should be handled as hazardous waste. If your processor automatically mixes developer and fixer, an adapter kit can be purchased that will keep the two separate, thereby reducing the amount of hazardous waste that is generated. (See hazardous waste management companies listed on page 2.) Lead Foil Packets: Lead is a hazardous material and should be disposed of properly. One option for disposing of lead foil film packets is to contact a local metal recycler. A second option is to use one of the film suppliers listed below, if they legitimately recycle your spent packets. Some film suppliers will recycle your lead packets for free when you purchase 50 packages of film. Contact the film company you are currently using and see if they have such a program. LOCAL METAL Action Recycling, Spokane, WA (509) RECLAIMERS: American Recycling, Spokane, WA (509) Earthworks Recycling, Spokane, WA (509) Walla Walla Recycling, Walla Walla, WA (509) Kodak (Mail-away Dental Program) (800) FILM Kodak (800) SUPPLIERS: ext. 724 Konica USA Inc (800) Fuji Photo Film (800) Polaroid Corporation (617) M Corporation (800) AGFA (800) Sterilant Solutions: Chemiclave Glutaraldehyde Used chemiclave solution and cold sterilant with more than 4 percent glutaraldehyde must be disposed of through a hazardous waste management company. 4 Drilling for a Greener Practice A Friendly Guide on Dental Waste
