Industry Voluntary Pollution Reduction Program for Aircraft Deicing Fluids Airline Update ACI-NA Environmental Conference April 14, 2014 Marianne Csaky Airlines for America (A4A)
Objectives Airlines» Research and Development Fluids Coatings»Deployment of Technologies Fluids Deicing Trucks Weather Forecasting 2
Summary Encourage Development Testing &Commercially Appropriate Deployment of Pollution Reduction Technologies (PRT) Outreach & Facilitate Information Exchange Provide information on Environmental Benefits of Appropriate PRTs Develop a Quantitative Pollution Reduction Goal Goal to Achieve Substantial Adoption of Pollution Reduction Technologies On a National Basis That Will Reduce Discharges to the Environment Enhancing Our Nation s Waters & Aquatic Ecosystems Report the Results to EPA Provide an Inventory of PRTs Compare Environmental Benefits of PRTs with Quantitative Pollution Reduction Goal 3
VPRP Status Work Group Task Status Defined Set of Airports Identify Defined Set of Airports that represents about 85% of aircraft Complete deicing fluid (ADF) usage nationally. Pollution Reduction List of Pollution Reduction Technologies Complete Technology Pollution Reduction Technology Baseline (2005) Complete Environmental Benefits Develop a plan for tracking deployment of Pollution Reduction Technologies Recommend best means of estimating environmental benefits associated with pollution reduction technologies Collect existing readily-available information from manufacturers, service providers, airports, airlines or other relevant entities Complete ACI Airport Survey A4A SharePoint Site In-Progress In-Progress Deicing Fluid MSDS from baseline to current Obtaining truck technology comparison FAA spot deicing evaluation Goal Development Outreach and Facilitation Recommend an estimate of the overall environmental benefits of pollution reduction technologies Recommend a Quantitative Pollution Reduction Goal (national and industry-wide goal stated in terms of oxygen demand reduction) Develop strategies and approached to informing public about the program and encourage development, testing and commercially appropriate deployment of pollution reduction technology 4 In-Progress Pending Benefits Analysis While there are on-going outreach activities, this working group will need to be activated.
Technologies Research and Development» Fluid Propylene Glycol Glycerin Blend o Low toxicity and low BOD fluid o Issues with residue»coatings Liquid Infused Nanostructured Surfaces with Extreme Anti-Ice and Anti-Frost Performance (SLIPS Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surfaces) 5
Technologies Research and Development (continued)»weather Preparation Surface Management Systems»Nozzles o Used to handle aircraft flow during weather events o Utilized during the 2013/2014 season Proximity detection o Ensures the nozzles maintains a certain proximity to the aircraft surface which reduces fluid use o Utilized at four airports during the 2013/2014 season 6
Technologies Deployment of Technologies» Fluid Propylene Glycol based fluids o Reduction in toxicity Bio-propanediol based fluids o Replaces traditional crude oil in the glycol production process o Sustainable corn sources»deicing Trucks Blend to Temperature Allows for the fluid mix for real time temperature Forced Air Ability to use forced air for snow removal and then application of fluid 7
Technologies Deployment of Technologies (continued)»weather Forecasting Weather Support to Deicing Decision Making (WSDDM) o System uses Doppler radar, surface weather stations and snow gauges located near the airport, which accurately measures the amount of water in the snow o Allows for better prediction which allows for better response 8
