2 The role of coal in the EU EU is the fourth largest consumer behind China, USA and India with 320 Mt hard coal and 459 Mt lignite/brown coal in 2012 Coal use accounts for 16,8 % of EU-27 total energy consumption and 25,9 % of EU-27 of gross power generation in 2011 EU coal figures in 2012: 459 Mt brown lignite/brown coal production (99 % of total EU lignite consumption)- Trend stable 122 Mt hard coal production what accounts for 38 % of total EU hard coal consumption Trend decreasing 203 Mt hard coal imports from Russia, Columbia, US, Australia and other countries Trend increasing

7 ENCIO ( RFCS funded) European network for component integration and optimisation Flagship project Project coordinated by VGB PowerTech with 4 European partners Total cost: 24 M, RFCS contribution 10 M Project from Objectives Transition from pilot to demo plant for 700 C technology, last step before construction of a 700 C power plant. To concentrate all scientific and technological efforts to make the 700 C technology ready for deployment in coal fired power plants. The project will focus on practical investigations, aiming at proving manufacturing, welding, repair and life-time concepts for thickwalled components. ENCIO can be seen as perfect transition from pilot towards demo features. 7

Comments: 1) Legislative Framework Yes Storage is enabled by the CCS Directive (2009/31/EC) 2) Successful Demonstration - 20 large scale demos running, but none in the EU (none from EEPR or NER300) 3) Commercial Viability No ETS price too low 4) Public Acceptance - Challenges particularly on storage on land 5) Infrastructure Yes Guidelines for Trans European Infrastructure 6) Innovation Yes Horizon 2020, The European Industrial Initiative on CCS (the SET plan)

12 New strategy for international cooperation in research and innovation Need to engage more actively and strategically in international cooperation: Three main objectives: Strengthen the Union's excellence and attractiveness in research and innovation as well as its industrial and economic competitiveness Tackle global societal challenges Support the Union's external policies Combining openness with better targeted actions Strengthened partnership with Member States Stronger contribution of research and innovation to external policies of the Union
