4 Tentative calculation of power generation cost Capital cost per kwh depends on load factor. Proper O&M is essential to maintain load factor high. Fuel cost per kwh depends on net thermal efficiency. High-efficiency plant helps. 6 UBC technology for utilization of low rank coal combined with USC plant UBC (Upgraded Brown Coal) Process at a Glance Developed by Kobe Steel, Japan and originally subsidized by METI. Removes moisture completely from lignite by highly energy efficient coal-oil slurry dewatering technology. (Lignite of TM 52% & 2,830 kcal/kg UBC of TM 0% & 5,900 kcal/kg) UBC product can be in the form of; i) Briquette for long distance transportation ii) Powder for direct feed to adjacent power station Good combustibility in normal USC plant Benefit by USC plant with UBC Plant i) Net thermal efficiency (HHV basis) Conventional (Subcritical): 29.2% [Improved by 18%] Integrated with UBC Plant (USC): 34.5% ii) Reduces CO 2 emissions [by 16%] iii) Extends lignite mine life (less consumption) iv) Makes operating cost lower 600 t/d Demonstration plant in Indonesia An Indian power company signed the MOU for pre-fs. 5

7 Summary High-efficiency power generation such as USC and the sufficient O&M know-how would deliver low power generation cost in the long-term. Upgrading is an one of important technologies to utilize Indian coal reserves. The CCT in Japan would contribute to stable power supply in India. 6
