1 High Sensitivity Sulfur Content Analyzer HSCA- The HSCA- is a high sensitivity on-line process sulfur analyzer ideal for the quality control of sulfur concentrations in petroleum production lines. It is capable of measuring the sulfur concentration in a variety of petroleum-based products, such as gasoline, kerosene, and light oil. The HSCA- is the first on-line analyzer in Japan to employ the X-ray fluorescence analysis method, which is used to determine the sulfur levels in low concentration ranges of - ppm. Features The instrument is equipped with a measurement system that employs the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence method. This highly reliable method allows for a simple construction free of an operation section and combustion furnace, and thus requires less maintenance than other conventional methods for analyzing sulfur levels. 3 Measurement principle The high sensitivity process sulfur analyzer HSCA- conducts measurements by employing the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence method (EDXRF). In this method, fluorescent X-rays are generated when the energy level of the applied excitation X-rays is greater than the energy of the electrons in the atomic orbital. When the excitation X-rays strike the electrons, the electrons are ejected from the inner shells, creating empty spaces. These empty spaces cause the condition of the atom to become unstable. To restore the stability of the atom, the orbits of electrons in the higher energy outer shells are moved to fill the empty spaces in the inner shells. The fluorescent X-rays produced during this process represent the difference between the binding energies of the corresponding shells. These X-rays are also called characteristic X-rays because each element has its own energy level. When the excitation X-rays are applied to a sulfur atom (symbol of element: S), the majority of the characteristic X-rays produced when the electrons move from the L to the K-shell have an energy of.kev. These X-rays are known as S-Kα X-rays. In addition to these X-rays, there are also X-rays that have an energy of.6kev. These are called S-Kβ X-rays. The following table lists the respective energy levels of the fluorescent X-rays produced by major elements found in samples analyzed by the sulfur analyzer. Thus, the mass concentration of the element being analyzed in the sample can be obtained by counting the number of photons. To conduct quantitative analysis of a particular substance, the HSCA- processes the characteristic X-rays unique to each element which enter the detector at different energy levels. After it processes the X-rays, the HSCA- creates an X-ray spectrum made up of a series of energy peaks. These peaks indicate the elements the sample contains and their respective amounts.
