13 Glossary I Greenhouse gas emissions (according to the Kyoto Protocol) The gases controlled by the Kyoto Protocol are: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs / HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Since 2012, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) has also been regulated as an additional greenhouse gas Greenhouse gas emissions of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry (VCI definition) Energy-related emissions Process emissions Direct emissions Indirect emissions Energy-related emissions (directly and indirectly from electricity purchases) and N2O process emissions as major sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry CO2 emissions resulting from the combustion of energy sources for conversion to heat and / or electricity Greenhouse gas emissions, which arise due to the process of production processes. Originating in the combustion of energy sources (energy-related emissions) or process-related in production processes (process emissions). Here: The energy-related CO2 emissions of electricity generation, which is attributed to the industry, which refers to the electricity (although they arise in the energy industry). 13
14 Glossary II Emissions Trading (ET) / Emissions Trading System (ETS) An instrument of EU climate policy with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions with the lowest possible economic costs. The amount of emission reduction is set politically (cap). Emissions trading participants must hold a certificate for every ton of greenhouse gas emitted and can trade the allowances among themselves. This leaves it to the market how it achieves this reduction. The European ETS is the first cross-border and world's largest emissions trading scheme. Market Stability Reserve (MSR) Tax on electricity Primary energy (primary energy consumption: PEV) Instrument of European emissions trading. The market stability reserve envisages an adjustment of the supply of allowances on the basis of the annual surplus situation in the emissions trading market. Indirect excise tax, which accrues both at the electricity supplier, when electricity is taken from a final consumer from the supply network as well as self-generators, take the power for self-consumption. Companies in the manufacturing sector and in agriculture and forestry are granted a partial discharge for operating electricity, provided a base amount is exceeded. Energy that is available with the naturally occurring forms of energy or energy sources, such as coal, gas or wind. 14
15 Glossary III End-energy (End-energy consumption: EEV) Energetic use Material use Specific energy consumption Part of the primary energy available to the consumer, after deduction of transport and conversion losses. Use of energy sources for energy production. Use of energy sources as a raw material base in production. Energy consumption per unit (here: related to the production index of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry). Falling specific energy consumption is an expression of higher energy efficiency. Renewable resources Renewable resources are agricultural and forestry-produced products that are not used as food or feed, but are used as raw materials for the production or production of heat, electricity or fuel. Fossil energy sources Hydrocarbons such as coal, natural gas, or petroleum, which are degradation products of dead plants and animals from geological past. Cracker margin index Indicator for the development of the profit margin in Germany crackers. C 15
