3 Our customer base spans both domestic and non-domestic work projects for builders, developers and housing associations. We also have strong links with a number of architectural practices and letting agents. We have evolved our services in direct response to the needs of our customers, our manufacturer partners and the demands of the market. This has seen us change and adapt constantly but always in a planned and progressive way. Unlike some of our competitors, we plot the course of new developments in order to remain at the forefront of what we do. We are fully committed to growing our business by investing in the recruitment and training of staff, the on-going improvement of processes and service, the greater use of technology and a specific focus on the renewable and sustainable energy issues associated with our industry. We ve even built a recycling centre for our own use and that of our commercial neighbours. 4 At Shackleton & Wintle, we take what we do very seriously and there are few more serious issues confronting us today than that of the environment. We re learning more and more about alternative sources of energy and our role as consultants and engineers means we have to keep pace with changes in technology and products. In this way we can make the best recommendations for our customers who have come to rely on us for our expertise and experience. Renewable energy is our future and we wish to be the leaders in this field and have invested heavily in order to provide solutions to every challenge. RENEWABLE & SUSTAINABLE We offer a range of products and related services geared around reducing the use of fossil fuels and the provision of environmental sustainability. This might include high efficiency condensing boilers and renewable and sustainable energy solutions for domestic heating and hot water. We re pleased to say that we re micro-generation certified and this certification is the only Government audited quality standard of installation and design for the renewable energy sector. We have worked with some of our existing customers to access grant funding for renewable projects and always welcome the opportunity to work with clients to help access additional funding where it is available.

5 Efficient heating is better than money in the bank Solar hot water and new gas boiler reduces costs We always try to consider eco friendly solutions and the new heating system replacement project needed to reflect this ethos. Shackleton & Wintle provided a solution that matched our budget and that included solar hot water and improved boiler efficiency with better control to optimise energy costs. The installation was carried out very professionally and we would recommend Shackleton & Wintle to anyone considering a new heating and hot water system. We are very satisfied with the performance of our new system and we are very confident that we are saving money on energy bills constantly. The solar panel units, as recommended by Shakleton & Wintle, are providing most of our hot water and this shows that renewable energy solutions can be economically justified. We know that our new system is better for the environment and this aspect gives us great satisfaction. As far as we are concerned, in today s financial climate the investment we made in the new system is going to give us a much better return than by putting the money into the bank. Mr & Mrs Boase, Cheltenham Green solutions Today s households spend, on average, between 27% and 35% of their total energy costs on heating water. Solar panels can not only reduce bills significantly but also reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Other options include the use of ground source heat pumps which can provide a total heating and hot water solution for a home, and air-to-water heat pumps which can do the same using different technology. Each solution would be offered depending on its suitability and the specific customer requirements of each individual customer. At Shakleton & Wintle we work to design a total system solution to meet our customers needs and requirements. Taking the environmentally-friendly route no longer means there is a need to compromise on hot water requirements of heating comfort. We also like to take a broader view of all things green when it comes to energy solutions and do our best to put our customers in touch with organisations that may be able to offer funding contributions towards the cost of installation of renewable and sustainable energy products. 6 HOUSEBUILDERS & DEVELOPERS The house building sector accounts for a considerable part of our business. Work is carried out on behalf of both national builders and smaller local developers. Undertaking both individual niche projects and large-scale developments of up to 300 homes, our customers include Barratt Homes, Bloor Homes, Charles Church Developments and Taylor Wimpey plc. There are no limitations to the services we can deliver on new build schemes, including leadwork and guttering and sanitaryware fitting, installation of above-ground drainage, provision of domestic water supplies and the design and installation of complete heating systems. Our expertise in heating systems includes conventional solutions such as gas, LPG and oil, as well as renewable products such as heat pumps and solar panels. The economic climate has made the market more competitive and customers are naturally becoming more demanding, setting the most stringent standards for quality of work and pricing. Our flexible approach enables us to work either to a customer s specification or by designing bespoke installations to a fixed budget. Building a strong relationship Barratt Homes award S&W new project A recent new-build project of 33 units by Barratts in Huntley, Gloucestershire, has seen Shackleton & Wintle successfully tender for the design and installation of all oil heating and external boilers. The project is the latest for Barratts who have had a longstanding relationship with Shackleton & Wintle for at least nine years. It is testament to the work that the company has produced for this national builder and developer that they are consistently awarded such prestigious projects. Barratts has some of the highest standards in the industry with a stringent selection process and set of criteria and regular sub-contractor assessment. Logistics, planning and overall suitability for the task in hand all come into play, and for the Huntley development, Shackleton & Wintle ticked all of the boxes. Shackleton & Wintle has always had an excellent relationship with Barratts because it understands the culture and mindset of its client which is based on an ethos that places customer care at its core. 7 Over the years, we have worked directly with many housing associations and local authorities in the maintenance, repair and upgrade of social housing. Direct contracts include gas, oil and solid fuel maintenance and annual servicing, together with planned and responsive heating systems installations and changes. In addition, we have undertaken disabled bathroom adaptions, as well as bathroom and kitchen upgrade works. For the past three years we have also installed and trialled microgeneration products for some of our social landlord clients. Technologies used include air-to-water heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and solar thermal panels. Our clients include Severnvale Housing Society, Stroud District Council, Gloucester City Homes, Cheltenham Borough Homes, Devon & Cornwall Housing Association and Fosseway Housing. We have also undertaken work for Bromsgrove District Housing Trust, Guinness Trust, Gloucester Housing Association, Orbit Housing Group, Bristol City Council, Merlin Housing, Optima and Two Rivers Housing. Our main contractor partners include Bullock, ISG Pearce, Bloor Homes, Barratt Homes and Markey Construction, to name but a few. Tenant involvement is key Forging new associations Shackleton & Wintle won a three year partnering contract with Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, for all gas servicing and repair work for the Association s housing stock in Devon, excluding the south west of the county. For the first time contractor interviews were tenant-led with the final outcome based on their scores and recommendation. Some of the deciding factors that helped win the contract included our use of PDA s, our personal approach to dealing with tenants, and our overall commitment to eliminating fuel poverty. As well as our Government accrediatation for microgeneration energy being an important factor, it seems we scored highly across the board and we look forward to a long and productive relationship with DCHA. HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS & COUNCILS Our indirect work for housing associations and councils through main contractors includes design and build renovation and new-build projects. In addition to the services outlined above, our experience and accreditations in the microgeneration sector has enabled us to provide the latest renewable solutions, together with access to grant funding for their customers through the low carbon buildings programme. We re also extremely proud of our accredited status with leading manufacturers enabling us to provide extended warranties on many of the appliances we install.

8 ARCHITECTS In recent years we have made great efforts to forge relationships with the architectural profession, experts in their own field whose abilities and experience we have the greatest respect for. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than seeing a project evolve from initial drawings and design concepts through to the finished build, and working with the architects on an individual dwelling or development gives us the opportunity to be involved at an early stage. In this way we can recommend the best and most appropriate solutions to achieve their design brief. By working in partnership with our customers, the benefits of forward design and planning can be felt by all concerned.

9 A change for the better The high risk of rising gas prices makes the Daikin Altherma Heat Pump an ideal replacement solution for an old gas boiler system. We had already carried out research into heat pumps. However we found the information provided by Shackleton & Wintle very professional and informative, as well as the competitive cost of the proposals which gave us the confidence to award the refurbishment project to the company. The installation was carried out very efficiently from every aspect and the implementation of the design of the project was completed without any issues or problems. The system was well commissioned and we were given a full instruction on the operation and controls. We would recommend Shackleton & Wintle to anyone considering a new renewable heating and hot water system. It s great to think we are achieving a much more efficient performance and saving money with the new system. Being a landlord brings with it a great deal of responsibility. Landlords are legally required to ensure that any gas appliances, fittings or flues provided for the use of their tenants are safe. Landlords must have gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every 12 months and obtain a Landlord s Gas Safety Certificate. Negligence in any of these areas can be a matter of life and death, so it s crucial for landlords to have a good working relationship with a reputable and certificated company. 10 Our domestic business has always been important to us; it s the foundation on which the company was built. In the UK each year some 30 people are killed as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty gas appliances. By arranging an annual service of your gas appliances by our Gas Safe registered engineers you will ensure that they operate efficiently and safely, and this applies to both gas, oil and LPG systems. An ideal and competitive solution for off-gas properties Benefits of a new ground source heating system for Stroud District Council n The system has been in operation since January 2009 and is being independently monitored by Stroud District Council and the Energy Saving Trust as a test site. n Tenants are already seeing reduced running costs from the installation. After 6 months the estimated annual electricity cost has been halved to 550. Economy 10 tariff has yet to be implemented and with this a further 30% reduction in energy costs can be expected. n The first estimate is that hot water and heating energy cost will be around 1.86 per day on average. n In terms of lifestyle, tenants report that it is so easy compared to solid fuel. No more carrying new coal in and hot ashes out. n The new system takes a little time to get used to but the tenants seem very happy with the system, reporting no problems at all. n The results so far more than satisfy the aims and objectives of the renewable source heat pump strategy of SDC for replacing homes where gas is not available. n Grants up to 5,500 were obtained under the Low Carbon Building Programme /CERT schemes ensuring new system installation costs were comparative to installing a new oil fired boiler system.
