2 Singapore International Water Week at a Glance Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) proved to be the world s premier global platform for leaders to share and co-create sustainable water management solutions. 3 The Premier Global Water Event Over the past seven editions, SIWW has cemented its niche as a leading event in the global water calendar. Held in conjunction with World Cities Summit (WCS) and CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (CESS), the event received over 21,000 participants from 125 countries and regions. Innovative solutions through appropriate technology bring hope that this challenge will be met in the near future. Water Leaders Summit A strictly by-invitation event, the Water Leaders Summit is an exclusive high-level conference which saw 500 of the world s water business leaders and key opinion leaders in attendance. Together with water ministers and government regulators, the three-day Summit distilled strategic issues impacting future sustainability, urban water resilience and supply resilience in cities. These discussions and bold new ideas have been captured in The Blue Paper, available for download at (The) edition of Water Leaders Summit and the Singapore International Water Week as a whole have affirmed their role as a successful international platform to co-create and share innovative water solutions. I highly appreciate the excellent opportunity to discuss main global challenges in the water sector with the world s top leaders and key decision makers because water sustainability is our shared issue and priority. Her Excellency Dr Lilyana Pavlova, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Republic of Bulgaria Young Water Leaders Summit Over 90 young water professionals participated in the Young Water Leaders Summit. The Young Water Leaders Summit (YWLS) welcomed 90 young water professionals from 30 countries and regions. With a stringent selection process in place, YWLS connected bright young water professionals with established business veterans in the water industry. Through panel discussions, leadership dialogues and peer learning, participants gained insights into global challenges and opportunities shaping the water sector, water projects and challenges in the region and innovative water solutions. Young Water Leaders Summit at SIWW was very well organised and (it has) maximised the learning and networking opportunities for participants. The programme was designed to broaden the participants view of innovation in water industry and application of novel technologies or ideas. 5 EXCHANGE SOLUTIONS AND BEST PRACTICES Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Launched in 2008, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize honours outstanding contributions towards the development of innovative water technologies, policies or programmes which benefit humanity. In conjunction with World Water Day, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Council lauded world-renowned hydrogeologist Professor John Anthony Cherry for his contributions and influence in groundwater management and his lifelong dedication to the protection of groundwater resources. Prof Cherry was honoured at the Lee Kuan Yew Award Ceremony, where he received S$300,000, a certificate, and a gold medallion. The Call for Nominations for the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2018 will commence in Visit for updates. The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize is a very important prize because it focuses world attention on water. I am very honoured to have received this prestigious prize because it focuses attention on a problem that I have spent my career researching groundwater contamination is a major part of the global water crisis and it is increasing as the world population expands. (Photo Credit: MCI) Professor John Anthony Cherry, Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Laureate Water Convention This year s Water Convention saw the largest turnout of over 1,500 water practitioners coming together to exchange professional insights and expertise. Spread over four days, the technical platform focused on five key themes Delivering Water from Source to Tap, Effective and Efficient Wastewater Management, Water for Liveability and Resilience, Water Quality and Health and Water for Industries. The Convention saw 42 technical sessions and 375 oral and poster presentations. Industrial Water Solutions Forum Into its third edition, the Industrial Water Solutions Forum had fast gained traction as the avenue to address the water planning needs and challenges industries face. With a strong global showing of over 220 delegates from 15 countries and regions, discussions centred on the role of water against the bigger environmental sustainability agenda, investment landscape and corporate profitability. Breakout sessions were planned for different industries to understand their unique challenges, best practices and technologies for water use and water reuse. HYDROPRENEUR Programme Hydro Pitch Day, the finale to the water entrepreneurship HydroPreneur Programme, saw an exciting line-up of six teams pitching before a global audience of top water investors, venture capitalists and potential clients. Team WateROAM stole the show with the Most Investment Potential for their water filtration system fashioned after a bicycle pump for easy drinking water accessibility in remote developing communities around the region. 6 DISCOVER TECHNOLOGY AND CUTTING-EDGE INNOVATION Water City Solutions Singapore As the most comprehensive environmental trade show in Asia, City Solutions Singapore brought together the latest solutions and technologies for smart nations and urban environments. Marking the first integrated expo concept, City Solutions Singapore served as a collective marketplace for the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), World Cities Summit (WCS), and CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (CESS). More than 1,000 leading companies and innovative start-ups showcased their cutting-edge solutions for water, urban development and waste management. Reserve your space at the Expo now! The show welcomed new entrants including Turkey, Scotland, Spain and the EU Business Avenues. TechXchange More than 220 innovators, investors, consultants, industry professionals and governmental stakeholders keen on accelerating the commercialisation of new water technologies from lab to market met at the one-day TechXchange forum. These delegates and forum leaders also decided the winners of the Municipal Innovation Competition and Industrial Innovation Competition. TechXchange is vital to the global water sector as it provides one of the best, if not the best, platform for showcasing new technology. TechXchange, a one-day forum brought the most influential and diverse figures in the global water industry to share ideas and lead discussions on emerging opportunities in today s water market. Dr Piers Clark, Chairman, Isle Utilities, co-organiser of TechXchange Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) MOU signed between United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and ZWEEC, a Singapore company. Close to 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were signed at SIWW. PUB, Singapore s national water agency signed various MOUs to develop and co-create innovative water solutions. These companies include Amsterdam s water cycle company Waternet, American multinational GE to explore new research opportunities and develop novel water treatment technologies and R&D projects locally, and with China-based Nanjing International Water Hub and two Chinese state water research institutes. Site Visits Delegates visited Singapore s key water facilities and treatment plants. This included Changi Water Reclamation Plant, NEWater Visitor Centre, Tuas Spring Desalination Plant and a Water-Smart Building and CleanTech Park.

7 GROWING YOUR BUSINESS FOOTPRINT Business Forums Ms Cindy Wallis-Lage, Board Treasurer, WaterReuse Association & Research Foundation and President (Water Business), Black & Veatch examining the opportunities for water reuse in American markets. SIWW saw over 1,800 participants across seven Business Forums, comprising three Thematic Forums and four Regional Business Forums. At the Regional Business Forums, the inaugural Latin America Business Forum was launched to capitalise on emerging market opportunities. Regional leaders shared their urban, water and environmental challenges and solutions, with a focus on Brazil and Mexico, the two largest Latin America countries. The Latin American Business Forum further strengthened the regional offerings from the dedicated China, India and Southeast Asia Business Forums. In addition to macro overviews, the Thematic Forums were structured around three current trends in the water industry. There were both exhibitions and forums for Smart Water Solutions and Water-Energy-Waste Nexus, showcasing Singapore s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (Phase 2) and the Integrated Waste Management Facility. The third, Desalination and Water Reuse Business Forum, covered two of the fastest growing segments in the water industry and took a deep dive into the growth opportunities. CO-LOCATED EVENTS More than 100 co-located events on the side lines added to the vibrancy and buzz of SIWW. A major highlight was the ASEAN Plus Three Water Ministers Forum (APTWMF) where Ministers from 10 ASEAN nations, China, Japan and South Korea shared the latest plans and developments of water resources management within their countries, and facilitated stronger cooperative efforts to improve overall water management. Aqua Conversations was an exclusive event tailored for a niche group of C-level executives. The session discussed regional business trends and the need to build leadership and management capabilities to drive business growth and achieve sustainability. Experts from around the world discussed economic and social significance of megacities at UNESCO Seminar on Megacities and Climate Change. They also examined vulnerabilities to climate change and put forth the necessary responses to deal with future water challenges. Closing Dinner at Empress Lawn, Civic District, the birthplace of Singapore s historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Aqua Conversations: The closed-door event saw C-level executives and senior representatives in a hearty dialogue with Dr Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of Singapore Economic Board.
