John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project February 2018 Community Construction Update Report #56 Prepared by: Stephen Watson, BC Hydro (O) or (C)
Project Status Surface Works: Work on the control room for the intake (downstream of the dam) progressing, including floors, walls, roof and more; Surge tank earthfill backfilling continues about 70% complete; Excavation of the blast rock at the tailrace now complete; and Preparation work for pole installation that will connect the powerhouse to the substation. Underground Works: Installation of powerhouse suspended ceiling continues; Powerhouse office complex moving forward with electrical and drywall installations; Shotcrete touch-ups of the power tunnel continues, with lighting and other services being removed as the work moves towards the powerhouse; The rock trap, which is located just before the power tunnel manifold where water will enter the water bypass or generators, is now complete; and Generator installation work continues.
Project Schedule Early March: Permanently shutting down Generator 3 within the old generating station (moved from early February); Late March: Water Intake water up or water filling; Late March: Tailrace tunnel water up; April: Power tunnel water up; April 30: Reopening of Brewster Lake Road access across the John Hart dam (was closed for three years); May: Generating unit testing; June: First generating unit begins to generate electricity into the power grid; October: Commissioning of completed facility. Our anticipated water releases down Elk Falls Canyon (base flow 4 m3/s) in March: March 1-4: 10 m3/s March 5-9: 45 m3/s March 10-31: m3/s Flows are subject to change based on weather and available generators.

People Profile Chad Saunders About Chad Background: Chad drove logging trucks for six years until he switched careers to work in electrical. He s now a journeyman electrician and an 80-ton crane certified operator. He s been with FMI for almost 11 years (five years as a supervisor). Chad s experience involves work on many substations, such as the isolated phase bus upgrades at GM Shrum and other types of BC Hydro substation work, to mill shut downs. Home: Chad was born and raised in Lantzville, where he currently lives. Working on a project close to home is a rare and wonderful change for himself and his family. Hobbies: In his off-time Chad spends time with his family; his two boys Jack and Wyatt, and his wife Kelly. When he s not at work, you ll find him camping, hunting, and fishing. Project Responsibility: Chad works as a deputy project manager for FMI. His day-today involves construction planning, pricing and scheduling. I look forward to seeing the day-to-day progress at the site, overcoming the challenges that are put forth, and seeing everyone go home safe at the end of the day. Working on a project this complex is a challenge a fun challenge.
Construction Point Of Interest Each month, BC Hydro and InPower BC will provide a construction fact, occurrence, or situation. Watering up the new underground facility, step by step. The project is nearing another milestone with water being introduced in stages to the underground facility. While water up may sound as simple as turning on a tap or pulling a plug, it s actually a carefully done process. Step 1: The water intake and valves: First, we will have water from the new intake at the dam fill the water intake structure. Second, with water from the intake structure, we will then commission the two water release valves that will provide the water flow down Elk Falls Canyon. Step 2: Tailrace and power tunnel: To add water in tailrace tunnel, we will pull the metal stop logs at the tunnel outlet and slowly allow water to enter the tunnel. This may take a day. To fill the power tunnel, the large operating gate within the water intake structure will be opened in stages. There are seven steps for watering up the power tunnel and it may take two weeks to complete. Step 3: Start commissioning/wet testing: Once all the water is in, we will begin preparing for operation of the generators and water bypass facility.
