The Ecosan Source Book, Tool Box and Data SheetGTZ Information Support for Ecological Sanitation Christine Werner, Florian Klingel, Patrick Bracken Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH ecological sanitation programme, Division 44 environment and infrastructure Eschborn Veranstaltung, Ort, Datum 1
Need for appropriate information regarding ecological sanitation Better information needed for: the planning and implementation of ecosan systems alternative sanitation options available design, implementation, operation and maintenance Many organizations recognize that need and start developing publications and guidelines, e.g.: Ecological Sanitation (SEI/Sida) Guidelines on reuse by EcoSanRes WHO-Guideline for excreta and greywater reuse ecosan Handbook by IWA Education and research for ecosan by UNESCO etc.
GTZ s contribution to better information support for ecosan Established information support: quarterly newsletter New: ecosan source book + tool box data sheets for ecosan projects technical data sheets for ecosan components
The ecosan source book + toolbox Final version will be available by end of 2005 Developed in close cooperation with an international expert group Main chapters of the source book: Ecosan in the context of the world water and sanitation crisis Planning, preparation and implementation of ecosan projects A toolbox for ecosan programmes for readers with little knowledge on ecosan for planners, practioners and decision makers
ecosan sources book: Planning, preparation and implementation of ecosan projects ecosan project planning approach in 10 Steps, adapted from the Household Centred Environmental Sanitation approach HCES and the Bellagio Principles (WSSCC) 10 ecosan project steps Step 0 Raising awareness Step 1 - Request for assistance Step 2 - Launch of planning & consultation process Step 3 - Assessment of current status Step 4 - Assessment of priorities Step 5 - Identification of options Step 6 - Evaluate feasible service and reuse options Step 7 - Consolidate ecosan plans for the study area Step 8 - Finalise consolidated ecosan plans for study area Step 9 Implementation Inception phase Feasibility- Study Awareness raising Detailed technical & operational plans Tendering Construction, Use Maintenance
ecosan source book: toolbox The toolbox aims to provide tools for each of the 10 project preparation and implementation steps contains a broad spectrum of field-tested instruments awareness raising materials, information and guidelines for safe agricultural reuse, technical data sheets, design and planning tools, participatory methodologies, education materials, project examples, monitoring and evaluation methodologies, etc. will be published via the internet is conceived as work in progress, any contributions from individuals or institutions are welcome!
ecosan source book: toolbox
Data sheets for ecosan projects Contain concise information on projects around the world where ecosan concepts have been implemented successfully make experience from reference projects available for planners and engineers Cover projects from developing and industrialized countries, high and low tech systems, rural and urban locations, pilot and large scale projects, various cultural settings demonstrate the wide range of possible fields of application for ecosan systems: tool for information and promotion
Data sheets for ecosan projects: Structure and content General data Objectives Location and general conditions Technologies applied Type of reuse Project history Costs O+M Design information Lessons learned Available documents Involved Institutions and Experts Veranstaltung, Ort, Datum 9
Data sheets for ecosan projects: Process of development sheets in preparation (in close cooperation with the respective project owner) and to be published on Open for other institutions/individuals (not only GTZ-projects!) Contributions of additional exemplary ecosan projects are welcome: template available as download on to have your project included, please complete the template and send it to Future cooperation with other institutions welcome (additional data sheets, common format, data base, etc.)
Technical data sheets for ecosan components ecosan concepts generally tailor sanitary systems to fit the particular context, a wide range of technologies can be used Many technologies are already well established, but have to be adapted to conditions of an ecosan project. Other technologies are just being developed specifically for ecosan applications Only little technical guidance exists for technology selection and design in ecosan projects. GTZ s technical data sheets for ecosan components are being developed to close this gap.
Technical data sheets for ecosan components Overview solid biowaste faeces urine greywater rainwater collection Vacuum Sewerage Gravity Sewerage (conv. or small-bore, central or decentral) Solid-Liquid Separation Urine diversion treatment Composting Toilet Biogas Digestors Composting Dehydration Toilet Storage Urine Processing Wastewater treatment (centralized or decentr.) Greywater - Separation Treatment Reuse Rainwater Harvesting - Catchment, Treatment, Use utilisation Soil conditionning with treated Excreta and Solid Biowaste Fertilizing with Urine Reuse of wastewater in agriculture, aquaculture, epuvalisation, etc.
Technical data sheets for ecosan components Section A: General description Basic principles of the technology, overview on available technology types, main field of application and limitations Useful for planners and engineers screening and pre-selection of potentially suitable technologies information tool fo informed choice
Technical data sheets for ecosan components Section B: Detailed information on different subtypes For each technology type: functional principles handling and maintenance extent of application economic data design information and available blueprints strengths and weaknesses further readings manufacturers good practice examples Useful for engineers and project designers final technology selection pre-design of facilities
Technical data sheets for ecosan components Process of development Currently the following drafts are being prepared: dehydration toilets, composting toilets, urine diversion, vacuum technology, reuse of urine and faeces, vermi-composting, greywater treatment, Next steps: Publication as draft version for public consultation on Call for feedback to international experts and practitioners Additional sheets on further technologies possible in cooperation with other interested institutions
