State Scientific Centre Research Institute of Atomic Reactors Russia-IAEA INPRO 10 years of cooperation Alexander Bychkov Director 22 September 2010 г.

Mr. Sergey Kirienko,, Director General, State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, delivers his statement at the 54th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference. IAEA, Vienna, Austria, 20 September 2010 Specifically we propose an initiative to the interested member states to launch development of a multilateral cooperation R&D program on Fast Reactors In future we are ready to consider a possibility to use the Multifunctional Fast Research Reactor to be constructed for such multilateral and bilateral cooperation

INPRO Achievements Phase I of INPRO The first significant result is INPRO Methodology - a tool for assessment of current and future innovative solutions and systems in seven assessment areas: safety physical protection economics infrastructure spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management proliferation resistance and environment

INPRO Achievements. Phase II of INPRO Develop global vision of opportunities and challenges in large-scale world-wide deployment of nuclear power to meet the requirements for adequate and safe energy supply for sustainable development of the humanity Assess the architecture and infrastructure of a global INES based on closed nuclear fuel cycle, thermal and fast reactors and international nuclear fuel cycle centres Look into the issues related to the development and world-wide introduction of small- and medium-size nuclear sources Russian organizations participate in 5 of 12 ongoing collaborative projects A nuclear energy system assessment is being performed currently under INPRO for Belarus using the latest version of the INPRO Methodology. This study is carried out based on trilateral collaboration between the Republic of Belarus, Russia and the IAEA

Major INPRO outcomes An important outcome of the first 10 years of INPRO is the establishment of a unique forum under the IAEA umbrella where technology holders and technology users can discuss and agree on prerequisites and requirements for intensive development and expansion of nuclear power deployment in the 21st century INPRO Dialog Forum has become a platform for these activities Over these years, INPRO has become de facto an Agency programme in the area of innovative nuclear energy technologies

INPRO - What could we do next? As further development of Phase I and Phase II within anticipated Phase III we could propose the following activities: Joint elaboration of a vision of how the global nuclear power should look in the 21st century Implementation of Joint research projects in various areas of innovative nuclear energy systems

INPRO - What could we do next? Within the scope of implementation of joint research projects we propose to the interested member states to launch development of a multilateral cooperation R&D program on Fast Reactors In future we are ready to consider a possibility to use the Multifunctional Fast Research Reactor for such multilateral and bilateral cooperation

What is Multifunctional Fast Research Reactor (MBIR)? MBIR is the multipurpose fast neutron research reactor Parameter Unit Capacity, MW Up to150 Designed life, years >50 Neutron flux density, cм -2 s Damage dose accumulation, dpa/year Up to50 Parameters Experimental instrumented channels with different neutron&physical characteristics in the core Number Loop channels with different coolants 3 Horizontal experimental channel ~6 Vertical experimental channel ~8 Cells for material irradiation in the core (no change of parameters) Cells for isotopes production in the core ~9 3 ~9 The reactor will provide new possibilities for development of advanced technologies in the nuclear power engineering on the basis of reactors with fast neutron spectrum and advanced fuel cycles Cells for materials irradiation and isotopes production in the blanket unlimited

MBIR design and experimental capabilities Experimental devices: - 1 test loop in the core central area D~130 mm, Fn~ n/(cm 2 s) - 2 test loops in the reflector D~130 mm, Fn~ n/(cm 2 s) Loop channels coolants: - liquid metals - gas - molten salts Vertical experimental channels (VEC): 3 channels in the core D~60 mm, Фn~(3.2-5) /(cm 2 s) Material test subassemblies: up to 15 channels in the core and reflector D~60 mm, Фn ~ /(cm 2 s) Horizontal experimental channels (HEC): up to 6 channels outside reactor vessel D~ mm, Фn ~ /(cm 2 s) Inclined experimental channels (IEC): up to 7 channels outside reactor vessel D~ mm, Фn ~ /(cm 2 s)

Operation of MBIR Scientific Foreign Fuel Operational Fuel Research production recycle partners personal infrastructure personal
