2 The CCNB For over 40 years, the CCNB (Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick) has offered a wide range of trainings technical, technological and professional in coveted fields. It also meets the needs for continuing education, in English and in French, of workers, businesses and people looking to specialize or re-enter the labour market. The CCNB has also been present on the international scene for several decades. Throughout the years, it has built a solid reputation by offering customized training, sharing its expertise and offering technical assistance through cooperation projects, in some fifteen countries, on every continent. An essential strategic partner of its environment and the communities it serves, the CCNB participates in a number of ways to the New Brunswick economic development. Innovation and technological integration is one of the most promising solutions to overcome the many social and economic challenges faced by regions. Over the past decade, the CCNB has stepped up its efforts to support and promote innovation and technology transfer initiatives in New Brunswick s industrial and manufacturing sectors. To date, the CCNB has identified four strategic research areas and industrial services that require the expertise of qualified staff in one or more of its campuses: development and marketing of industrial bioproducts; mechanical prototyping and assembly and welding technologies; health and wellness; agroindustry sustainable development. The CCNB is also making efforts to align its innovation mandate with the strategic priorities emerging in New Brunswick s economy. The Centre Since 2000, the CCNB has developed - in the northwestern region of New Brunswick - different innovative practices by collaborating on initiatives in the fields of composting, new food product development and fuel ethanol production from potato waste. In 2010, the CCNB received a five-year, $2.3 million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to set up a biorefinery technology scale-up centre (BTSC) for the entire Atlantic region. The institution also received financial support from the New Brunswick Economic Development Department, the New Brunswick Department of Energy and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to purchase equipment for pilot scale processes. Its mandate The BTSC research team located at the Grand Falls site of the CCNB supports the industry in its bioproduct promotion efforts. he team uses microbial fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, bioseparation and chemical process technologies to produce high value-added industrial bioproducts (including bioethanol, biogas, biodiesel and alcoholic beverages) from forest, agricultural and marine biomasses as well as from industrial and municipal wastes. The centre gives college and university researchers as well as companies the opportunity to test their product or process at near-production scale thus validating their technologies before undertaking commercial production or negotiating the value of their technology with a licensee. Furthermore, the centre has mobile pre-commercial equipment that can be used by its staff of biorefinery experts to demonstrate innovative processes to the industry. In this way, the centre helps to reduce the potential financial risks of adopting new technologies. 1
3 Services offered throughout Atlantic Canada Developing new processes and technologies; Demonstrating processes and technologies; Completing pre-market assessment of concepts; Providing technological support; Providing specialized analysis for hops, malt, beer, spirits and others; Training employees of a company on the use of technology for the biofermentation of wastes from the forestry, agricultural, marine, industrial and municipal sectors. 5 Research funding Various federal and provincial research support programs have recently been developed to foster partnerships between colleges and companies. The CCNB is eligible for most of these programs, namely: The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Six types of grants are offered under the College and Community Innovation Program (CCI): - Technology Access Centres (TAC) Grants; - Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) Grants; - Industrial Research Chairs for Colleges (IRCC) Grants; - College-University Idea to Innovation Grants (INNOV-UC); - Applied Research and Development (ARD) Grants; - Innovation Enhancement (IE) Grants. Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRCC-IRAP) Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) New Brunswick Department of Economic Development New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) 4
6 Research networks and partners The CCNB fully fulfils its role as an innovator by proposing original solutions to problems in the industrial sector. It realizes that innovation doesn t happen in a silo. This stands out even more in light of the place occupied by the many partnerships between the CCNB and businesses and the CCNB and colleges/universities/research institutes to accelerate innovation in Canada. At present, the CCNB has special ties in applied research and industrial services with several organizations, namely: Alliance for Commercialization of Canadian Technologies Canada Association pour la recherche au collégial Atlantic Council for Bioenergy Atlantic Grains Council Atlantic Provinces Community College Consortium Applied Research Network BioNB Canadian Association of University Research Administrators Canadian Organic Growers National Research Advisory Committee of the Colleges and Institutes Canada National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRCC-IRAP) Network Springboard Atlantic Inc. and colleges universities research institutes: Acadia University (NS) Agriculture Canada Bio Food Tech (PEI) Cape Breton University (NS) Cégep de Thetford / OLEOTECK Inc. 7 Annual Atlantic Canada Biorefinery Conference Since 2012, the CCNB has organized, in collaboration with BioNB and Springboard Atlantic Inc., an annual Atlantic Canada biorefinery conference. The conference, that moves from province to province, already attracts over one hundred participants and contributes in promoting the biorefinery concept as well as its economic and environmental potential in the Atlantic region. The annual conference brings together renowned speakers, includes site visits and encourages dialogue in order to explore, in Atlantic Canada, innovative conversion options of different biomass sources into value-added products for the global market. Students, researchers and entrepreneurs can discuss projects and business opportunities during business-to-business meetings organized outside the program. The conference promoters aim to increase the number of businesses that use or produce biomass. They seek to raise the industry s and the research sector s awareness to research project opportunities as well as biorefinery and bioenergy industrial services. Examples of projects Carbon dioxide conversion for the production of microalgae in the biogas production process Buckwheat malt production Valorisation of sap water in maple syrup production Purification and conversion of forest waste hemicellulose and lignin Development of value-added products from algae residue Commercial scale biogas production Chitosan extraction from non-crustacean sources Hop and barley quality analysis in the Atlantic region for beer brewing Production of ethanol from expired beverages 6
