Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation Cornell University, Ag. and Biological Engineering Oneida Fish Culture Station Richard Colesante Marine Biotech Inc. Large scale Aquaculture and Seafood holding Waterlife Design Group/Aquatic Eco-Systems Professional Engineer, Environmental Discipline Aquacultural Engineering Society ( Systems Overview Recirculation Aquaculture System is a combination of: Pumps / Sumps Intake Pumps Recirculation Pumps Discharge pumps Culture Tanks Particulate filtrations Bag/ cartridge/screen Biological filtrations Aeration and degassing equipment Oxygenation CO2, N2 removal Disinfection equipment UV, Ozone Monitoring, control and alarm devices Temperature control systems ph, conductivity, ORP Feeding systems Harvesting systems Influent and effluent treatment systems Transport and processing systems Systems Overview The key to a successful design in combining these components in a manner that considers: 1. The biological and physiological requirements of the organisms being held. 2. The purpose and goal of the system 3. The end-users and system personnel 4. Regulatory agencies and permitting requirements With an underlying goal of keeping things: reliable, robust, user friendly, energy efficient Systems Overview Infinite combinations of filtration components Systems Types can be reasonably grouped into different industries. Four primary industries that utilize aquaculture design and engineering fundamentals. Commercial Aquaculture Life Seafood Holding and Distribution Public / Private aquaria systems Aquaculture Industry Systems primarily used to raise organism for: Human consumption (private) Restocking and species recovery (public) Private Aquaculture industry is faced with many challenges highly variable operating costs and very tight margins. Global economy and fluctuating farm gate prices Fluctuating feed costs and limited protein sources Successful private ventures turn to tactics like: Utilizing Economy of Scale Serving Niche markets Adding Value to products Diversifying their product lines Local fresh/live distribution 1

2 Aquaculture Industry Understanding the System/Industry Requirements Biological Requirements Fast Growth Good feed conversions High Densities Implies the need for good husbandry and water quality Purpose and Goal of these systems To make money Implies the need for efficient use of resources Water Labor Space Energy Personnel Agricultural backgrounds, entrepreneurs, hobbyists Usually have a vested interest in the system dynamics Hands on approach Regulatory Agencies FDA EPA local health inspectors Labor laws Aquaculture Industry Important Design Considerations: Reduce Operating Costs!!! High densities Efficient feeding systems Highly efficient water treatment components Reduced water exchanges Temperature and Oxygen monitoring and control systems Influent and Effluent treatment Environmental impacts Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility Red Cliff, WI Culture Systems Process Treatment Vessels CycloBio CycloStrip Culture Tanks CycloSwirl CycloFoam Radial-flow Settler Live Seafood Holding Industry Wholesale vs. Retail Systems Asian Markets, local niche species Products: wild caught and farm raised Crustaceans- lobsters, crabs. Shellfish/ Bivalves-mussels and clams Depuration and wet storage Inland Saltwater systems Closed, little makeup water 2

3 Live Seafood Holding Industry Understanding the System/Industry Requirements Biological Requirements No feeding / Purging No growth/low metabolism Fluctuating densities Fast Product Turnovers Purpose and Goal of these systems Wholesale - Maintain Stock, wait for market price increases Retail- Display animals for consumers, trigger impulse buying Personnel Seafood Distributors, and restaurant managers. Regulatory Agencies FDA local health inspectors Live Seafood Holding Industry Important Design Criteria Biofiltration Fast reactions, high turnover rate Temperature Control Low metabolism- 40 deg water temps Condensation on pipes, filters, tanks Maintenance Low Maintenance, system goes without service for months. Disinfections Bivalves-depuration systems Fecal Coliforms regulations and testing Live Seafood Holding Industry Biomedical Research Industry Industry evolution Aquatic research Models Zebrafish Frogs New construction, retrofit of exiting space Mobility, dismantle and move Aquatic Animal Models Danio rerio (Zebrafish) Oryzias latipes (Medaka) Xenopus species Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) Pimephales promelas (Fathead Minnow) Astyanax fasciatus (Blind Cave Fish) Axolotl (Tiger Salamander) Bufo marinus (Cane Toad) Rana pipiens (Leopard Frog) Understanding system/industry requirements Biological/physiological requirements Husbandry Breeding Space requirements Purpose and goals of the systems Genetic research, drug discovery related to human health Propagation of specific lineage for several generations Tracking individual organisms and crosses.
