NEWS CONTACT: Louis Stout The Juhl Agency 121 W. Franklin St. Elkhart, Ind / )CR3 FOR P.M. RELEASE FEBRUARY 25 RADON SOLUTION UNVEILED AT APCA CONFERENCE PHILADELPHIA -- A new product breakthrough in the battle to reduce radon pollution inside homes was unveiled here this week at the Indoor Radon Conference of the Air Pollution Control Association. The new technology was announced by Control Resource Systems Inc., whose president said that in-field tests "have proven our product's ability to dramatically reduce radon progeny that has been the plague of citizens in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and several other states." CRSI president Ronald W. Marsh described the new product and his company's field tests at a media briefing in downtown Philadelphia just blocks from the APCA sessions, where he also presented a technical paper on the breakthrough. CRSI is a leader in sophisticated indoor air-quality systems. Control Resource Systems Inc. 670 Mariner Drive Michigan City, Indiana 46360

RADON SOLUTION UNVEILED AT APCA CONFERENCE add one Until now, there has been no proven method for reducing in American homes cancer-causing radon gases that are seeping in from uranium hot spots on the earth. Marsh presented his company's research in a paper that detailed laboratory and field test results conducted over the past four months. All of the tests demonstrated the CRSI 600H air purification system drastically reduces radioactive radon progeny. Health Physics Associates (HPA), independent radiation protection consultants, conducted the field tests on behalf of CRSI in homes in Reading Prong, an area of eastern Pennsylvania where a serious radon gas problem was discovered a year ago. Government testing at that time revealed that some residents were inhaling dangerous radon levels equivalent to smoking 22 packs of cigarettes a day. The results of HPA's testing support laboratory evidence found last November by the Allergy and Respiratory Institute of Colorado and the Radiation Hazards Research Group of the U.S. Bureau of Mines: CRSI's air purification system dramatically reduces radon progeny from the air in homes. In one of HPA's tests, a CRSI system was placed in a Boyertown, Pa., home, where working levels of radon were measured as high as 0.2 prior to installation. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends remedial action when working levels exceed.05. The CRSI unit reduced radon levels by as much as 95 percent.

RADON SOLUTION UNVEILED AT APCA CONFERENCE add two During the Allergy and Respiratory Institute of Colorado's experiments, the CRSI 600H was extensively tested in a carefully controlled chamber used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Radiation Hazard Research Center. In its report to CRSI, the Institute said, "The results of this preliminary research suggest that the use of this air filtration system may be an inexpensive and effective method for the removal of the radon daughter health hazards from the home." The report also stated that the CRSI system effectively reduced the radon level to one well within EPA acceptable standards and kept the radon daughters from accumulating. "This is a vital breakthrough for homeowners who have been breathing, eating and sleeping in deadly radioactive chambers," said CRSI chairman R. Steven Lutterbach. "We've felt all along our equipment would do the job, but we wanted to wait for the proof. When our equipment is properly installed, people can rely on it to substantially reduce levels of radon progeny in their homes." Lutterbach said that up to this point regulatory commissions have looked to more passive measures to reduce radon levels that cost from $5,000 to $30,000 in excavation, remodeling and construction fees. In many cases, t the radon continued to seep through resealed foundations, walls and floors. CRSI's equipment, on the other hand, costs approximately $1,000 and is easily installed.

RADON SOLUTION UNVEILED AT APCA CONFERENCE add three The CRSI 600H is a 600-cubic-foot-per-minute air purification device that attaches to an existing forced-air furnace or air-conditioning ducting system. It may also be installed separately with its own ducting system. "Our system is a more economic solution to the 1ife-threatening hazard," Lutterbach said. "It's practical, reliable and efficient. It is currently being used to remove other airborne contaminants such as asbestos fibers, pollen, mold and bacteria, and a number of toxic fumes, including formaldehyde." Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the natural decay of uranium. Long recognized as a serious health threat to uranium miners, radon pollution has become a major concern of homeowners. Recent ERA findings estimate that one million homes may be contaminated, and indoor radon exposure may cause nearly 30,000 of the 120,000 lung cancer deaths each year, second only to smoking. ERA officials believe the problem is a national issue as other states across the country are discovering similar problems. Radon gases travel for miles underground, rising to the surface through faults and porous rocks far from the uranium source. The deadly gases rise into homes and become trapped. Because homes today are more energy-efficient and airtight, the gases accumulate at dangerous levels, attach to dust, and lodge in the lungs of people breathing them daily. CRSI has also developed sophisticated equipment to meet the air purifica tion needs of dangerous asbestos abatement projects. And its equipment is used extensively in medical facilities such as hospitals (nurseries, burn

RADON SOLUTION UNVEILED AT APCA CONFERENCE -- add four units and contagious-disease units) and in homes (for people with allergies, emphysema and other respiratory dysfunctions). Additional testing of the CRSI units has been done in the Mayo Clinic on allergies. The 600H utilizes a three-stage filtration system. Stage one is the prefilter that removes large particulate matter from the air. Stage two is an activated carbon filter that adsorbs organic and inorganic vapors and gases. Stage three is the High-Efficiency Particulate Absolute (HEPA) filter that was originally developed during World War II development of the atomic bomb (the Manhattan Project) to remove radioactive particles from the air. The HEPA filter is individually tested to ensure removal of all particulate matter 0.3 microns in diameter to an efficiency of percent from a specified airflow.
