Irrigation in North Mississippi? Mary Love M. Tagert, Ritesh Karki, and Joel O. Paz Mississippi State Extension Service Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering 2016 Mississippi Water Resources Conference Jackson, MS April 5-6, 2016

Overview Introduction and Review Better quantify irrigation in North Mississippi? Project highlight Current status, typical practices What help is needed, future work

Introduction and Review Ground water permits. Surface water permits. Data Credit: Pat Phillips, MS Dept. of Environmental Quality

Introduction and Review Bulk of permits, especially for irrigation, are in the Mississippi Delta. More groundwater permits than for surface water. Number of permits, irrigated acres in Delta increases each year; concerns over groundwater declines. Growing interest in using surface water for irrigation, especially in Central Delta where groundwater declines are more pronounced. North Mississippi

Introduction and Review TRVWMD Member Counties.

Motivation Yield from Field in Noxubee County (Units - Bushels / Acre) IR Irrigated Field; NI Non-Irrigated Field

NE Mississippi Water Use Ground water permits. Surface water permits.

NE Mississippi Water Use GW Permits Year SW Permits Number of Permits Issued Ground and Surface Water Permits Issued in NE Mississippi

NE Mississippi Water Use On-Farm Water Storage System

Project Highlight: Study Area Noxubee County, East MS Located in the Middle TombigbeeLubbub watershed The pond is about 17 acres and 25 feet deep Total drainage area is about 111 acres Runoff and nutrient monitoring only from Drainage 1 about 70 acres Constructed terraces to direct water from the field to the pond

Project Highlight: Study Area Corn CornSoybean Rotation

Project Highlight: Methods Instrumentation: ISCO 6712 automated sampler at northern inlet to pond Watchdog weather station YSI sonde to measure parameters in pond In Situ level logger in pond Lindsey Growsmart magnetic flowmeter on all 3 Zimmatic pivots; Fieldnet wireless irrigation system

Project Highlight: Methods Grab water samples: Samples were collected from inlet and in the storage pond. Samples were collected every three weeks during growing season, and every six weeks during winter. Samples were analyzed for ph, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus species, and suspended solids.

Project Highlight: Methods Automated stormwater samples: Samples were collected at northern inlet to storage pond. Samples were collected using ISCO automatic samplers set to sample based on a rise in channel level. Samples were analyzed for the same nutrient species as grab samples.

Project Highlight: Results

Current Practices Delta Pads and Pipes Furrow irrigated, Irrigation Tailwater Storm Water Tailwater Recovery Ditch Temporary Storage Often implemented with funding assistance from NRCS Northeast Mississippi No Pads and Pipes Sprinkler irrigated, Storm Water Terrace to Divert Runoff No Temporary Storage More topography Privately funded

Final Thoughts and Future Work More data? Permits? Constraints and competing demands: Five drinking water systems using surface water, and three are in Northeast Mississippi Local NRCS funding priorities Cost:benefit analysis (Dr. Brian Williams)
