3 Historic Trends in Renewable Energy Research ( ) Scopus contains over 224,350 peer-reviewed articles on renewable energy 1, with almost 95% of this research occurring within the past 40 years. Since 1985, the United States has been the global leader in renewable energy research with over 20% share of published research, followed by China (14.4%) and Japan (7%). When tracking publication growth over this period, research growth accelerated significantly in 2005, driven by significant rise in research coming from China. Figure 1: Renewable Energy Research, Since 2013, China (24.2%) has overtaken the United States (17.4%) in global share of renewable energy research. India (5.8%), Germany (4.7%), and the United Kingdom (4.7%) round out the top five in research leadership in the last few years.
