PROJECT 5.6 DIGESTATE DISTRIBUTION FOR LARGE BIOGAS PLANTS; STORAGE AND TRANSPORT Paz Vilanova Plana Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Ing Bernd Noche
CONTENTS Objectves Methodology WP1: Identification of different storages and transports for digestate WP3: Identification of digestate treatments WP4: Determination of distribution models for North Rhein Westphalia, Germany. Mathematical model Status
OBJECTIVES The main aim of this thesis is to study the digestate distribution; storage and transport. Other important goals: To study different types of digestate storage and distribution systems all over Europe To evaluate advantages and disadvantages of each type of storage and transport To study the different treatments to reduce the volume of the digestate To determine distribution models for North Rhein Westphalia, Germany
METHODOLOGY The project is organized in different work packages, which are: WP1: Identification of different storages and transports for digestate WP2: Evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of storage and transport WP3: Identification of digestate treatments WP4: Determination of distribution models for North Rhein Westphalia, Germany.
WP1: Identification of different storages and transports for digestate Storage Lagoons Tanks Storage bags Open areas Digesters or storage tanks Modes of transport Trucks Tank trucks Tractors Spread tractors Pipe lines Rail Ship
WP3: Identification of digestate application & treatments Whole Digestate Whole Digestate Separation S/L Land application Solid fraction Liquid fraction Fertirrigation Purify liquid for disposal to sewer Recirculation to process Drying/ compacting Compost Land application
WP3: Identification of digestate application & treatments Separation process Sedimentation Flotation Screen separator Belt press Centrifuges Screw press Treatment for solid fraction: Drying/Compacting solid phase : Extruder Belt dryer Drum dryer Cyclone Feed-and-turn dryer Compost Land use Separation Drying Diagram 1: Type of digestate %. 8 WP4: Determination of distribution models for NRW Legend: Biogas plants Energy production (Mwel) Biogas plants in Germany in 2012 Digestate generated 65.5 million m 3 [1] 578 Biogas plants in NRW in 2014* Installed power in NRW kw* Area used for feeding the biogas plants ha* Agricultural land use available m 2 Map 1: Biogas installations registred in NRW July Source: nrw abbildungen.pdf [1] K. Möller and T. Müller, Effects of anaerobic digestion on digestate nutrient availability and crop growth: A review, Engineering in Life Sciences, vol. 12, no. 3, pp , * Landwirtschaftskammer Nordrhein Westfalen July 2014
WP4: Determination of distribution models for NRW Objective: Determinate a distribution model for NRW Tool: google maps and ArcGIS Methodology: Identification and location of the biogas plants Create a data base with relevant information for each biogas plant Selection of the variables and indicators case of study (vulnerable areas, land use, transportation systems, ) Analysis, normalization, weighting and creation of a map
MATHEMATICAL MODEL Goal: Optimization of the distribution and minimize the distribution cost of digestate minimizes the total transport cost Quantity of digestate applied to each of the spatial units in close area Only available digestate can be transport to closed and long distance Only one type of transport mode can be chosen for transport Range of decision variables
