Development of knowledge-based web services to promote and advance Industrial Symbiosis in Europe SYMBIOSIS 2014 International Conference June 2014 President Hotel Athens
esymbiosis LIFE09ENV/GR/ Development of knowledge-based web services to promote advanced Industrial Symbiosis in Europe LOCATION: Greece, UK BUDGET : 1,763, EC Co-funding: 49.8% DURATION: Start: 01/10/2010 End: 30/06/2014 2
Region of Sterea Ellada (RSE) - Viotia 3
Coordinating beneficiary: esymbiosis Partners National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Associated beneficiaries: Region of Sterea Ellada (RSE) University of Surrey (UoS) Paul Innes Consulting (PIC) AVCO Systems ltd (AVCO) CLMS HELLAS SA (CLMS) Envireco Consulting SA (ENVI) 4
Main Objective Produce a Web Based PLATFORM for Industrial Symbiosis Communities, Offering automation Supporting SMEs, Consider Regional Priorities and Enable public administrators (municipalities, regional offices) to implement their environmental policy and to monitor environmental and economic consequences 5
Industrial Symbiosis Industrial Symbiosis (IS) can be defined as : An innovative approach which brings together companies from all business sectors aiming at improving cross industry resource efficiency through the commercial trading of material, energy, water and sharing assets, logistics and expertise. 6
Background and Aims The esymbiosis innovative environmental practice will contribute to: Trade waste as feedstock among companies, build environmentally integrated and efficient communities Cost savings in raw materials and discharge fees Waste reduction across a wide range of industrial activities The development and assessment of environmental policies at local and regional level. 7
MAIN EU POLICIES TARGETED 2150/2002/EC: Waste Statistics Regulation Joint Ministerial Decision 50910/2727/2003 (Official Gazette, B 1909/2003), (OJG 1909/2003): Solid Waste Management in compliance with European Waste Framework Directive 91/156/EEC 6th Environmental Action Plan Goetenberg strategy and the Lisbon process Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP), Framework Programme for Competitiveness and Innovation 8
Project Objectives Consolidate practices and valuable knowledge base (UK experience) in a form (service) running on an autonomous basis Build features to support innovative policy approaches, facilitating the IS implementation as an environmental policy at a local-regional-national level Formulate a knowledge-based approach with a potential to report measurable social, environmental and economic benefits 9
Further Project Objectives Prepare and train industries to embark on IS and utilize the service Deploy the widest possible application of scientifically verified technologies for IS upgrade Provide means to disseminate IS in the region of Viotia, but also in other regions in Greece and Europe Improve and increase the participation of Small and Medium business enterprises (SMEs) into IS market oriented activities Reduce the natural resources consumption (raw material, energy, utilities) Establish Industrial Symbiosis networks, recruit champions to disseminate IS in Greece, Balkans and all regions deprived of government support for IS 10
Benefits & Results The project work focused to : Generate the interest for the new paradigm with the introduction of advanced technologies and promote its use. The delivery of an Industrial Symbiosis platform with innovative features. Produce an automated web facility to enable effective matching for industry in Industrial Symbiotic actions. Create new champions Industrial Symbiosis and advance it using media, social media practices, creation of forums, conferences and focused Industrial and technology dissemination actions. Produce a solution based on the industry characteristics of Viotia to reduce the consumption of natural resources. reduce volume of waste streams disposed to landfill. 11
Project Actions 12
IS vs. esymbiosis Current IS Practice Manual Cost Intensive Expertise Required Only exact matches discovered Static Process esymbiosis Practice Automated Cost Effective User Friendly Process Partial Matches discovered Dynamic Process 13
Implementing the e-symbiosis Technology Advantage esymbiosis employs Artificial Intelligence Knowledge modelling to support the synapsis of Successful Industrial Partnerships Ontologies classify all relevant information to Industrial Symbiosis, eg. Materials, Technologies, Production Workflows, Geographical Information. Registration and Matching are supported by sophisticated algorithms. 14
IS Portal Technology Advantage esymbiosis supports partnerships, producing suggestions for matching, exploiting technology knowledge and Best Practices for Industrial Symbiosis from global experience. Industrial Symbiosis experts are actively participating and supporting portal members engaging in IS Business Transactions. Partnership Results and Success Stories are integrated in the esymbiosis Knowledge Base. 15
The Industrial Symbiosis (IS) Portal The IS Portal is live. With functions such as member communications, presence, information, forums, and expert blogs for consulting members and visitors on Industrial Symbiosis. facilitates Business Relationships Managements Business Transactions Support Used for Training
Distribution of Industrial Sectors in Viotia Warehouses 7% Business Units 3% Metallurgical Industries 28% Other 4% Livestock Units 3% Food - Beverage Industries 12% Textile - Leather Industries 6% Wood Industries 4% Paper Industry 5% Industrial Non- Metallic Mineral Products 6% Chemical Industries 22% 17
Prioritizing Industrial Sectors in pilot region Metallurgical Industries Mineral Industries Chemical Industries Food Industries 18
Gathering Background Information and Data Collection priorities First Focus on: Material flows Waste stream specs Locations Extending knowledge with: Context description Inspection audits Commercial profile 19
Primary Information 20
Additional Modeled Information The knowledge models are enriched with: Toxic waste Environmental records IPPC Techniques Liquid disposal Production stages Significant Information extensions to improve Quality of Decisions Physical properties of resources Volumes available to trade Cost of disposal 21
Capitalizing on best practices and state-of-the-art Challenge: Translate cases into sharable knowledge Resources: published and free accessible data, regional information for Viotia Approach: Build components compatible with reference data Produce links with ontologies Used publicly available descriptions of best practices in UK Approach: Selection of best practice cases Transformed information in appropriate form to integrate with ontologies 22
Produce Knowledge from use cases Source Material Application Quantity, Capacity The knowledge model was enriched with 250 Best Practices bringing knowledge to include: Sources Uses Volumes 23
Modelling Regional Industrial activity - as rules in material and process ontologies Extracting information and Building Knowledge Links: industrial activity (ΣΤΑΚΟΔ) input and output flows of technology streams 24

Technologies and processing data About 500 processes available for storage 27
Applications of Knowledge Models Example: Scenario of Potential use of Pyrolysis Question in Hand: What is the potential to set up a Pyrolysis Unit in Viotia? Process Inputs: plastics, biomass, MSW, etc. Process Outputs: oil, biogas, biochar/coal What is the local market for: Coal? Gas? Fuel oil? 28
Use of technology units Preliminary search indicates 206 types of industries that use coal and could possibly replace it with charcoal 196 processes that use natural gas, biogas or LPG and could possibly replace it with pyrolysis gas 45 processes that use fuel oil and could possibly replace it with bio-oil 51 processes that use heavy oil, petrol or gasoline and could possibly replace it with bio-oil Input/output models provide indicative flows, however, opportunities depend on specific capacities, locations and specific demands! 29
