Aims of CarbonNeutral North East 1. raise the profile of climate change across all audiences 2. offer a carbon service to businesses 3. help people reduce their carbon emissions 4. raise funds for low-carbon project 5. influence policy 6. use CarbonNeutral Newcastle to stimulate action across the North East
Core funders Trustees of CarbonNeutral North East Dr Nigel Martin Professor Christopher Edwards Rt Rev Martin Wharton Lord Rupert Redesdale Baroness Diana Maddock Councillor Gareth Kane Mr Phil Hughes Dr Andrew Cox Principal, University of Durham Vice Chancellor, Newcastle University Bishop of Newcastle Liberal Democrat Energy spokesman Liberal Democrat sustainable development Newcastle City Council sustainable development Chairman of SUSTAINE Community representative
Helping Newcastle meeting CO2 reduction targets: progress: have reduced by 20,000 tco2 (including partners) and raised enough to offset 4,000 tco2 (of 1.8mt pa) supports local projects: raised over 50k, enough to insulate 500 homes / plant and manage 4,000 trees raise awareness, profile: generated over 2m positive media, advertising. Seen by over 2m people, opp. to view 50x
The process of going CarbonNeutral 1. Commitment Director signs up to CarbonNeutral programme 2. Carbon Assessment and baseline We establish your carbon footprint Energy efficiency audit 3. Reduce emissions Set targets Energy reduction Capital expenditure Green travel plan Recycling Renewable energy 4. Offset ( neutralise ) the remainder of CO 2 ; voluntary payments to our charity which we invest back into: local climate-friendly technology projects eg Warm Zone, renewables and local community forestry 5. Communicate the climate leadership: customers, clients, staff, branding, web, newsletters, media
Our projects investing in our city cleaning the city s air, and image visible and tangible promotable helping communities clean power for the city warming our homes creating green spaces

Offset for every tonne of CO2 offset (that costs 13.65), this allows our partners to match with funds from other sponsors Contribution CO2 saving One insulated home: tonnes One tree 10 1 tonne over growth cycle Solar PV for one flat tonnes If we all did our bit... If every home in the city saved just ONE tonne of CO2 through simple energy efficiency measures, and offset ONE tonne of CO2 per year, we would save 250,000 tonnes of CO2 in year one, and take just 14 years to become entirely CarbonNeutral as a city!
The CarbonNeutral standard CarbonNeutral is an internationally recognised and respected kitemark for carbon offset, in partnership with the CarbonNeutral Company rigorous protocols are adhered to with the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management carbon footprinting measurement and monitoring of CO 2 emissions participants are eligible to use the CarbonNeutral brand signing on the dotted line to signify best practice

Science City: the future? Newcastle Science City is driven by a commitment to make a significant contribution to the long-term economic growth of the region One of four major themes is Energy and Environment Tackling climate change requires understanding the interaction and feedbacks of all three elements and their sub-compartments, a goal that can only be achieved by crossing conventional barriers between academia, industries and society.
Science City: the future? The low-carbon culture programme is composed of three main activities: 1. a city-wide carbon footprint 2. roadmaps towards a low-carbon future of the city 3. implementation of CarbonNeutral in the region
City-wide carbon footprint all major sources of carbon emissions: buildings: industrial parks to private housing private and public transport waste all greenhouse gases: CO 2 methane industrial emissions
Carbon map for Newcastle (simulation)
Roadmaps towards a low-carbon future comparison of data with 2001 GHG emissions report successful GHG reduction initiatives in other cities and regions emerging zero-carbon technologies and carbon trading with partner areas. integrated routemap scenarios towards a lowcarbon city e.g. 60% reduction by 2030, 2040, 2050 these scenarios will define action points how to achieve the simulated reductions, i.e. by improving efficiency and adding increasing contributions of renewable energy. viability will be assessed through consultation
