5 Intelligent Manufacturing roadmap Towards the lean and sustainable manufacturing process of the 21st century This roadmap issued from ESTEP has been extended to other materials producing industries and will enable coverage of the full supply chain from continuous upstream manufacturing to downstream discrete manufacturing (MANUFUTURE and Factories of the Future») 5

8 The Energy-Efficient construction roadmap Construction Industry has been challenged to significantly improve energy efficiency Steel can play a crucial role in energy efficient building (approximately half of steel products used in construction) The ESTEP's roadmap meets the E2B programme Good cooperation with the ECTP (ESTEP represented in the E2BA association) 8

10 WG Planet roadmap a roadmap on "the sustainable use of resources" was produced by the WG in A short and a long version are available. it is truly a mine of topics, ideas and visions in the field of expertise of WG4: iron units (lower grade ore, 3R, ecodesign) energy & reducing agents (energy efficiency, biomass, charcoal, renewables, increase of EAF share, electrolysis, hydrogen, CCS, coke from non-coking coals, waste heat recovery, exergy analysis, alternatives to water cooling fluxes, alloying elements & refractories logistics preservation of the ecological services of the environment (air water, soil, land use, biodiversity) skills and knowledge 10

12 Important requests from Energy Intensive Industries are now considered Energy Intensive Industries (EIIs, steel, cement) now accepted as potential partners for the CCS Flagship Programme EIIs' topics (energy, environment) will be given more emphasis in future work programmes (DG Research/NMP position paper, DG TREN) High Education, specific training and life-long learning programmes of ETPs recommended by the EU Commission SMEs to be associated ( energy, environment) : equipments suppliers, sub-contractors.

13 SET-Plan and Steel Industry The steel industry has been invited to prepare a road map in line with the SET-Plan structure and in coherence with other energy intensive industries. Within EU steel plants, to establish a single format of the definition and the follow-up of Energy consumptions and CO 2 emissions To address both integrated BF/BOF plants and scraps/eaf plants Identification and evaluation of potential gains by main fields Carbon needs for reduction Energy efficiency of the equipment and processes Energy recovery Maximizing the use of scraps Process yield improvement Application of steel products: Transport, construction, steel for energy 13

15 STAKEHOLDERS - industries in the steel and energy value chain - research centres in multi-disciplinary fields like metallurgy, power generation, environmental sciences, corrosion, socio-economic sciences, healt and safety - university, consultants.. TOTAL BUDGET M as order of magnitude for the period up to 2015 (funding 50% of the total budget) 15

16 Objectives of the WG People To secure sustainable human resource management for the European steel industry Initiating research and identifying innovative methods of human resource activities within the European steel industry Developing attracting and recruiting strategies for the European steel industry Creating training concepts for the European steel industry, taking into account the technological evolutions, and meeting future green requirements 16

17 Conclusions The steel sector offers a set of solutions to meet the medium and long term needs of the EU low-carbon economy. The ESTEP's programmes fit with the new initiatives launched by the EU Commission such as PPPs, SET- Plan, CCS, ESTEP is ready to contribute to the development and implementation of green initiatives, with all its shareholders, of which the SMEs. 17
