1 OCEAN 2018 PORTUGAL ALIVE CAMP S U M M E R S C H O O L S H O R T - T E R M F A C U L T Y - L E D P R O G R A M EMPOWERING YOUTH FOR OCEAN SUSTAINABILITY MARINE SCIENCE AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN A COMMUNITY-LED CONSERVATION PROJECT Ocean Alive Camp is a Summer School that aims to inspire young people to become stewards of ocean conservation. Our educational program embeds into an award-winning local sustainability project, Keepers of the Sea. Brightened with our passion and long term scientific (net)work at the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve and Arrábida Marine Park. W H A T ' S U N I Q U E ENGAGE IN A FISHERWOMEN CONSERVATION PROJECT LEARN FROM LOCAL SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE EXPLORE NATURAL PARKS AND MARINE PROTECTED AREAS BE GUIDED BY PASSIONATE MARINE BIOLOGISTS PARTICIPATE IN A REAL PROJECT WITH IMPACT

2 During the camp, students will witness firsthand the conflict between the needs of the ocean and the needs of the people. Participants will take on the challenge of developing life-changing and balanced solutions as part of their final project. Camp activities include lectures, handson lab classes, field and water activities as tools explore marine life, and close interaction with local culture. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEA Ocean Alive Camp takes place in Setúbal, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Setúbal is located by the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, classified as an important area for nature conservation, and Arrábida Natural Park, a hotspot of marine biodiversity and the first marine protected area to be implemented in Portugal.

3 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS» Learn the monitoring techniques used for the resident population of bottlenose dolphins in a boat trip» Snorkel the rocky reefs of Arrábida Marine Park» Explore the biodiversity of the seagrass meadows at low tide» Sample plankton while kayaking and be surprised by its wonders in a laboratory» Ride the waves in a surf experience» Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to the fish market and get moving with traditional dance» Listen to the fascinating life stories of the local fisherwomen and discover secret recipes in a cooking class» Take action by participating in a beach cleaning and awareness campaign with local children» Apply scientific protocols and meet Portuguese marine science experts» Enjoy the night lights through stargazing and firefly observation
