Understanding of state and federal environmental laws regarding waste water b. Identify various sources of pollution. c. Identify the various impacts of discharge into a wastewater collection system. d. Describe the components of wastewater collection systems. e. Define the different types of solids in wastewater. f. Understand the natural cycles of water and wastewater. g. Outline the components used in a wastewater treatment facility h. Identify various types of waste discharges from a wastewater facility. in writing describe the regulations designated by Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water Act that insures compliance of discharge of a treatment facility along with parameters identified in the discharge permit. list specific sources of pollution and identify ways to prevent discharge of pollutants into the collection system. list the types of common collection systems including the layouts of a sanitary sewer, storm water and combined sewer. list the basic types of terms and acronyms used such as inorganic and organic matter, biological oxygen demand (BOD), carbon dioxide demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS) in writing define and identify the source of total solids, dissolved solids, suspended solids, organic and inorganic solids and floatable solids identify the impacts of the hydrological and nitrogen cycle has on the treatment of wastewater. identify the types of waste discharges and the permits required by both the state and federal government. learner can articulate the fundamental principles of waste water management EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE Elementary Algebra

Explain the fundamental process and components of a wastewater treatment facility. a. identify the different plant designs required to treat various waste types. b. identify and describe fundamental wastewater processes that includes the head- works, primary and secondary clarifiers, secondary treatment, solids handling, and disinfection. c. describe the basic functions of the wastewater treatment processes. d. identify the factors that influence and control wastewater treatment processes. e. identify procedures for startup, operation, maintenance, and shutdown of a wastewater treatment plant. f. identify various methods of effluent discharge g. define tertiary waste water treatment in writing list the variation of biological process design such as ponds/lagoons, trickling filters and activated sludge. list the preliminary treatment structures and the mechanical devices in writing describe the physical properties and functions of each process component and the role of detention and retention time. list the instrumentation used to monitor factors the control the treatment process. in writing state the procedures for starting and shutting down a wastewater treatment facility. learner will be able to articulate the basic process and components of a wastewater treatment facility. learner can draw the components of a tertiary treatment plant and intended use of discharge. 3. 4 b. explain the difference between grab sample and composite sample. c. identify factors that indicate a process is not functioning properly, identify the source of the problem, and take corrective action. d. describe instrumentation used to monitor the process control points. e. describe the type and safe use of chemicals used in the process such as metal salts, ph adjustment, DO enhancement, and polymers. f. explain the mathematical derivation for control methods of chemical feed, flow rates and detention time. g. explain hydraulic loading rates. in writing list the types of analysis performed in wastewater treatment such as DO, TSS, BOD, and their use in process control. describe when grab samples or composite samples or best used. list typical measures taken to correct problems such as low DO and other discrepancies found from laboratory results. list basic instrumentation used to monitor the wastewater treatment process and the interpretation of the results. define chemicals used for process control and how it changes treatment. calculate feed rate, flow rates and changes in velocity of the flow. list formula used for hydraulic loading rates and interpret the results. learner can articulate current accepted laboratory and chemical protocols used in wastewater treatment 4. Explain the significance of current accepted laboratory and chemical protocols, in the disinfection process of wastewater discharge, including chemicals used, de-chlorination protocols, and safety procedures a. identify the principles of wastewater disinfection with chlorine and other products. b. describe procedures for controlling the chlorination process to obtain the desired effluent disinfection. c. describe procedures for startup, operation, maintenance, and shutdown of a chlorination process. d. describe the procedures for collecting samples, interpreting lab results, and making appropriate adjustments in chlorination process. 5 e. identify factors that indicate a chlorination process is not functioning properly, identify the source of the problem, and take corrective action. f. describe applications and the limitations of alternative disinfectants. g. describe the safety hazards associated with the use of chlorine. types of chemicals and equipment used for de-chlorination in writing explain the different options used to disinfect treated water such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, on-site generation of chlorine, UV and ozone. in writing explain the points of chlorine application such as prechlorination, process control, and post chlorination. list the type s samples taken to assure effectiveness of disinfection, interpret lab results and explain what appropriate adjustments should be made in chlorination process. in writing explain trouble shooting techniques for possible malfunctions of the chlorination process and include corrective measures for chlorinators, evaporators, hypochlorinators, chlorine dioxide facilities, and related safety procedures list alternative disinfectants used in the wastewater process such as UV and ozone and describe the possible limitations. in writing create an emergency response plan that includes preparedness, evacuation, response and mitigation for a chlorine leak. learner can articulate current accepted laboratory and chemical protocols used in the disinfection process of wastewater discharge, chemicals used, dechlorination protocols, and safety procedures learner can create a water treatment plant safety plan in the event of a chlorine leak. 6 Grading Information Grading Rationale Evaluation Methods: Each instructor has the flexibility to develop evaluative procedures within the following parameters. 1. Written exams must represent at least 60% of the course grade. 2. Final exam must represent at lest 20% of the course grade. 3. The Post Test is to be embedded in the final exam and must represent at least 10% of the course grade. 4. Other activities may represent at most 10% of the course grade.
