2 OBJECTIVES (linked to Aichi target #20 and 10, SDG #14): Objective 1: raise awareness on the economic benefits produced by coral reef Objective 2: encourage countries to apply concrete mitigation strategy for coral reefs Objective 3: encourage innovative financing for coastal management

3 History and people Born in 2008, GM21, chaired by: : Mexico, United States, WRI & Secretariat 2013-YTD: Secretariat and CRIOBE (TA) linked to objective 1: 44 members, 40 institutions, act as a mailing list, low feedback expected. linked to objective 2: 4 institutions, 5 members from ICRI, technical committee, validation of reports. linked to objective 3: (WG in progress) with 10 institutions and pilot projects

4 Main achievements Objective 1: raise awareness on the economic benefits produced by coral reef and their positive economic return as a public investment Compilation of valuations (e.g. CI, 2008) and contributions to on-line database of valuations/valuation projects (e.g. MESP, MACBIO, RESCCUE,etc.) Communications to international events (e.g. COP 21, WPC, ISRS,etc.) and press (e.g. The economist) WS with decision-makers in the Wider Caribbean (Bonaire, 2014, 30 participants)

5 Main achievements Objective 2: encourage countries to apply concrete mitigation strategy for coral reefs In progress: Guidelines for mitigation of damages to coral and for compensation schemes (MERCICOR method) 2 pilot sites in the Wider Caribbean for training and implementation of compensation scheme ICRI Technical advisory group to be set-up

6 Main achievements Objective 3: provide advice to countries for innovative financing of coastal management costs. In progress: ICRI pilot site countries for PPPs (caribbean and SE Asia) Communication of initial results in WCC ICRI Technical advisory group to be set-up
