3 WERF Optimization Challenge Objective: Develop methods and technologies that will allow the wastewater sector to achieve treatment goals while reducing the resources expended by 20% (energy and resources) as well as a 20% reduction in solids. 20/20/20 goal Best Practices for Sustainable Wastewater Treatment: European Experience, Case Study, and Evaluation Tool Concept Development (WERF, 2009). Carbon Heat Energy Assessment and Plant Evaluation Tool No Cha Cha Cha It s a static whole plant simulator Online MS Excel based tool You can download your inputs and outputs but not the tool Provides calorific, energy and thermal balances as well as carbon footprint A tool for everyone
6 How is CHEApet used? Intended for users to create a rough estimate of an existing facilities energy efficiency and carbon footprint Allow for users to relatively compare upgrade scenarios to reduce a facilities energy consumption and/or carbon footprint Upgrades could include Switching from aerobic digestion to anaerobic digestion Utilizing Anaerobic digestion biogas in a combined heat and power (CHP) system Upgrading facility motors to premium efficiency motors Evaluating more efficient aeration technologies Utilizing thermal recovery for supplemental building heat

CHEApet is not all inclusive Biological processes that CHEApet currently cannot simulate: No TP Removal (Chemical/Biological) No 2-stage Carboneous-Nitrification Systems No Step Feed No Oxidation Ditch You can still use CHEApet just choose a process that most closely resembles your process. Some other noteworthy items Energy/Carbon Footprint calculations designed around Energy/Carbon Footprint calculations designed around North America (US and Canada) as well as Puerto Rico
13 How should CHEApet be used? CHEApet should be used to relatively compare options. Lots of assumptions are made within the model to make it generic and therefore, usable by as many people as possible. It still can be used for WWTPs with slight variations in the process by choosing the configuration that most closely resembles the WWTP being modeled. Therefore, the results may not be 100% accurate for your facility. However, whatever error is included, will be within any comparative scenarios, so you can still compare the results relatively. CHEApet is NOT a design tool CHEApet is NOT a reporting tool To create a more accurate, site specific, model conduct a selfassessment or hire a consultant
