29 Winning Concept and overall conclusions Most robust treatment train for mild desalination: mix of Spuikom/Biox/WRWL pretreatment EDR product Highlights and innovations Ultra Filtration: Very reliable application for new mix of raw water streams (TRL 8) Combination of suitable pretreatment and Electro Dialysis Reversal in Mild desalination on a mix of surface water and industrial streams to produce industrial quality water (TRL 7) Combination of coagulation and UF as pre-treatment for Nanofiltration on CTBD and industrial wastewater was not sufficient Membrane Distillation is a promising technology, not economically feasible yet (TRL 5)

31 Take Aways Water matters to the industry and water management is becoming a necessity in the industry Industry is taking the lead in contributing to innovative solutions The E4Water Dow Terneuzen case study shows that - Mild desalination technology to treat miscellaneous brackish water streams is feasible - The mild desalination concept can be an attractive approach to produce water for industrial applications in delta areas across the world - These delta s will increasingly be characterized by the presence of limited fresh but abundant brackish water sources - Mild desalination can become a game changing solution for decreasing fresh water availability
