2 Evides Industry Water Full-service solutions for the (petro)chemical and food industry Key Figures Some of the major European river delta s are concentrated in the Benelux and northern Germany. The accessibility for deep-sea s, its proximity to industrial hotspots in downstream chemical industries, automotive industries, pharmaceutical industry and others as well as the close range availability of human resources in some of the most densely populated areas of Europe have led to the emergence of vast industrial parks. Evides Industry Water is the major water supplier and operator of water treatment facilities in Rhine, Scheldt and Elbe oriented chemical parks such as Rotterdam, Vlissingen, Terneuzen, Antwerp and Hamburg. Our services to the chemical industry are based on long-term BOT (Build Operate Transfer) contracts. We are a subsidiary of Evides Holding, the drinking water company that produces chlorine-free, healthy and very tasty drinking water from river water in the south-west of the Netherlands. Having almost 140 years of experience in water treatment we are used to apply a multitude of technologies to produce a vast range of water qualities, from industrial process water to ultrapure demineralised water. As a true full-cycle water company we own and operate major industrial and municipal waste water treatment plants. And being where we are having to cope with a shortage of fresh water and saline intrusion of our onshore sources we have come to appreciate the need to reuse fresh (waste) water sources as a must-have rather than a nice-to-have. All this can only be achieved by applying a multitude of technologies. To that effect we cooperate with universities in The Netherlands, Belgium and China to further develop water treatment concepts. We are inspired by the challenging demands of the chemical industry with respect to their water demand. To us reliability, safety and cost efficiency are the leading drivers to remain a leading partner-in-water to the chemical industry. 4 Process Water 2011 Revenue 65,5 million has been dominated by the start-up of the water treatment 2011 facilities at BASF in Antwerp (Belgium) as of January 1. As a contribution to a greener world, BASF has been seeking ways to diminish its dependency on ground water. Additionally, BASF has investigated means to alternative financing of an expansion of its demineralised water capacity due to the growth of its integrated Verbund site at Antwerp. Evides was able to give BASF access to fresh river water by means of a 100 km connection to vast holding lagoons in the Meuse river. Evides was also able to offer the most competitive offer. Its proven track record with the design, construction and of complex water treatment facilities (similar facilities at Dow Chemical, Shell, DuPont and Yara) served as suitable reference to BASF. Finally, Evides was willing to finance this scheme. As a consequence, Evides will be supplying to BASF 6,5 Mm 3 annually plus 2,8 Mm 3 of demin water until the year Commissioning in late 2010 went smoothly and resulted in an on-time start-up within the allocated budget. All our other process water facilities contributed succesfully to the excellent result of Evides in Especially the new facility of DWP (serving three refineries and 16 chemical companies in the Rotterdam petro-chemical industry) has seen its portfolio develop progessively to almost 83% occupancy. In September 2011 we have been able to put its pre-treatment plant into, thereby enabling to switch from drinking water to the nearby lake of Brielse Meer as primary source. This switch will enable a further increase in profitability of the of DWP. The implementation of asset management procedures have enabled Evides to apply for the PAS55 Asset Management certificate, which was awarded in November We expect that risk-based maintenance in combination with new investments and operator training will add to our profile of reliability and competitiveness. We trust this will enable us to grow our portfolio of projects and water supplies to the chemical industries in focus areas in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and China. 6 7

9 Waste Water Treatment 2011 Revenue 4,0 million* Evides is a full cycle water company. We treat municipal waste water in custom-designed plants for the municipality of The Hague. We also own and operate the waste water treatment plant of Schiphol Amsterdam International Airport. In the industrial parks of Vlissingen and Delfzijl we own and operate waste water treatment plants that treat complex, chemical waste water streams to discharge quality. In both instances we discharge to surface waters that are designated nature reserves, hence demanding al excellence by Evides in order to guarantee 24/7 compliance has seen no change in our waste water treatment portfolio. However, we expect to see new contracts in 2012 with at least one al contract of an industrial waste water treatment facility. * excluding Delfluent, Delfluent Services (two water treatment plants The Hague) and the WWTP Delfzijl 16 17

11 Water Reuse 2011 Revenue 1,4 million Membrane Bio Reactor The Netherlands Treatment of domestic wastewater Apart from a necessity to treat waste water before discharge to surface water, we consider effluent the product of waste water treatment as a valuable source of process water for the industry has seen the commissioning of our biggest reuse scheme to date: the MBR (Membrane BioReactor) in Terneuzen (in the south of the Netherlands) has passed its performance test. This facility treats municipal waste water of the small municipality of Terneuzen to perfect effluent. This effluent is transported to the major chemical facilities of Dow Chemical 12 km away. The quality is good enough as direct feed onto the RO plant of Evides, that produces 1,5 Mm 3 (future capacity: > 2,0 Mm 3 ) of ultrapure water for Dow. We continue to operate an effluent reuse plant at Cargill (Sas van Gent, The Netherlands): this plant produces demin water for steam generation by Cargill. At Dow in Terneuzen (The Netherlands) we use effluent of the non-saline waste water treatment plant for the production of cooling water suppletion water. We participate in extensive pilot plant research at various locations, such as Solvic (Antwerp) and Dow Chemical (Terneuzen). In China we operate an effluent reuse demonstration plant (35 m 3 /hr), that is being used at coal-to-chemical plants in the arid northern provinces of Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia. Finally, in the Netherlands we participate as a leading partner in the Delft Blue Water consortium that aims to treat effluent of Holland s biggest municipal waste water treatment plant (Harnaschpolder, near The Hague) to high-value feed water to the biggest greenhouse area of Europe in nearby Westland. All of these schemes aim at becoming full-scale projects in the nearby future. They clearly show our commitment at developing these projects based by integrating technology innovation, design, risk appetite and al expertise into partnership-dbfo contracts with stakeholders Service Production Technology Treatment of domestic waste water to effluent suitable for reuse as a source for the production of demin water million m 3 /year MBR-RO 20 21

13 Innovation We are dedicated to develop innovative technological concepts as part of our strategy to create value for our potential and existing clients. To that effect we are engaged in both fundamental as well as applied research. Extensive pilot plant research serves as study prior to upscaling design and engineering of full-scale plants. Currently all of them are focusing on reuse of waste water. Within the consortium of Delft Blue Water ( we strive to develop an efficient and reliable process for production of high-value irrigation water for Europe s biggest greenhouse area at Westland (south of The Hague). Effluent of our municipal waste water treatment plant Harnaschpolder (capacity: 10,000 m 3 /hour) serves as primary source. In 2011 contracts have been signed for a multi-year research project as part of the European E4 research program under the auspices of the CEFIC, the European confederation of the chemical industry. At sites in Antwerp (Solvic) and in Terneuzen (Dow Benelux) the reuse of waste, rain and condensate streams is being studied using new concepts of existing technologies. In China we have successfully been using our demonstration plant (see picture) at various chemical sites in the arid north of the country. The mushrooming integrated chemical sites demand an integrated approach to reuse of waste water. In Rotterdam we will be starting a project that aims at treatment of municipal waste water by using innovative technologies for energy, nutrient and water recovery. In 2011 we have signed contracts for fundamental research into technological improvements in the industrial water cycle. The most challenging program is the integrated research within the SDRP framework (Sino-Dutch Research Program), funded by Evides. Research groups at University of Delft, Harbin Institute of Technology and PAES (Xian) will be focusing on complex waste waters originating in the chemical industry. The SDRP aims at the fields of low-energy waste water treatment, reuse and zero-liquid discharge. This will lead to opportunities in greenfield projects in China as well as optimisation of existing projects in Europe
