Let s Energize Capturing District Energy Opportunities in Our Towns and Cities September 20, 2016 Sandra Yee, FVB Energy Inc.
What is District Energy? Definitions: A planned energy system for a community where thermal energy is produced in a central plant location and is distributed to buildings in the community. or It s a strategy. Community scale heating, cooling, and power generation, undertaken to make use of local resources and surplus heat to meet local needs in a manner that is more effective than individual production.
What is District Energy? A modern district energy system is comprised of 3 main components: 1. A Central Energy Centre 2. A Distribution Piping Network 3. Customer Buildings
What is District Energy?
What is District Energy? It s a Connection. It connects energy producers and waste energy streams to energy users and enables the use of low value heat sources It is a local solution for a local need.
What is District Energy? It s a Key to Low Carbon Communities! International District Energy Association - District Energy: Key to Achieving Low-Carbon Communities
Where is District Energy? It s everywhere. In Canada: Markham, Hamilton, Toronto, Windsor, London, Ottawa, Sudbury, Cornwall, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Surrey, Revelstoke, Halifax, Charlottetown, Montreal, Arviat, In the U.S.: New York City, Seattle, St.Paul, Las Vegas, Connecticut, Around the World: Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, UK, China, Russia, Australia, United Arab Emirates,
Why District Energy? There are only two ways that we can reduce CO2 without reducing our standard of living: 1. Public Transit 2. District Energy
Why District Energy? Cities accounting for 70 per cent of global energy use and for per cent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. In Canada, 80 percent of all residential energy use was for space and water heating in 2009.
Why District Energy? Any solution for the climate and energy transition must explicitly address sustainable urban heating and cooling, as well as electricity. One of the leastcost and most efficient solutions in reducing emissions and primary energy demand is the development of modern (climate-resilient and low-carbon) district energy in cities.
Why District Energy? The Story of Denmark - THEN In the 1970 s, imported oil provided ~90% of Denmark s energy supply. The price per barrel of oil QUADRUPLED in the oil crisis of Danish citizens shivered in their homes while factories were forced into temporary shutdowns, alternate street lights were switched off and driving was banned on a Sunday. 4x By 1980, energy planning at the Federal level lead to legislation & tax measures mandating a path to higher efficiency, renewable fuels, oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, the expansion of district energy systems, and the use of combined heat and power.
Why District Energy? The Story of Denmark NOW Population 5.6 millon people Denmark s dependence on imported energy is <10% ~65% of all homes are connected to a district heating system (up from 30% in 1970s) ~80% of district heating is produced cogenerated with electricity in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants 40% of Denmark s electricity grid is fueled by renewable energy. Copenhagen, Denmark is pushing to achieve carbon neutrality in 2025.
Why District Energy? The Story of Denmark NOW Denmark has achieved self sufficiency, becoming a net exporter of energy for many years. District heating can reduce fuel imports, lower carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty.
Why District Energy? Scale of Economies: Underground network of pipes combines heating and cooling requirements of multiple buildings Fuel sourcing/flexibility Technology not feasible on a single-building basis Creates a Local Economy: A market for valuable (waste) thermal energy Local jobs in construction and operation Develop local fuel sources Increased Efficiency: Purpose commercial/industrial quality built facility Trained and experienced operators Core business Resilience Improves energy security
How Can We Capture the Opportunity? Have vision: begin with the end in mind to plan, design, and build for district energy Intensify development around downtown core and mobility hubs. Develop policy and engage the community. Planning, zoning, and locating an energy centre and distribution piping network Design buildings with hydronic, water based heating and cooling systems and basement level infrastructure Educate and learn to overcome challenges with lack of familiarity with district energy systems and technologies. Learn and model what others have done. A dedicated team engaged and focused on the advancement of the community energy system: connecting end-users, developers, planners, community stakeholders.
District Energy What? Why? Community scale heating, cooling, and power generation, undertaken to make use of local resources and surplus heat to meet local needs in a manner that is more effective than individual production. Modern district energy systems are a combination of district heating, district cooling, combined heat and power, thermal storage, heat pumps that enable GHG reductions, improve air quality, improve energy efficiency, use local and renewable resources, creates an economy and boost resilience and energy access. How? Vision. Planning. Learning. Educating. Will. TOGETHER.
Let s Energize Thank You.
